Having had an excellent short break in Krakow a couple of years ago I am thinking of returning to Poland for a skiing holiday next year.

Where would be the best area to go? Zakopane? Has anybody skied in this area and would you recommend it? How does it compare to say Austria?

I have friends who live in the Czech Republic and they dont recommend Slovakia. They say although it is slightly cheaper than Austria the long ques, slow lifts and grumpy staff make Austria better value for money. I dont think there is much snow making in Slovakia either. However I have hiked in the Slovakian Tatra during the summer months and the scenery is fantastic. I would definatly recomend it for a walking holiday.

I agree the English Lakedistrict is fantastic. My only complaint is it gets a bit busy these days.

I studied Mechanical Engineering. In the first year I lived at Castle Irwell (not very nice!), second and third years I was in Lower Broughton. Very rough!. I remember seeing the police heicopter over most nights - it was like being in a scene from Police Camera Action! My friend was in the rowing club and in the 3 years he found 2 dead bodies in the River Irwell. frightening! Was a bit of an eye opener for me coming from quiet Cumbria. If I remember right the Arndale Centre was blown up by the IRA in between my 2nd & 3rd years.

There are nice areas though - Castlefieds, Salford Keys etc. How long have you live in Manchester?

I am from the UK Iwona, and unfortunatly I have to agree with your comments. People here have more money now and easier lives than they have ever had. However dispite this they are not as happy as they used to be. I think Britain is top if the "teenage mothers" league, and top of the "divorce" league. Sad really.

I hope your country can keep all the values that matyjasz listed in his post.

I agree. Krakow cant compete with Prague for archetecture. But I would still rather go to Krakow than Prague. I liked the fact it does not have a sex industry or stag parties getting paralytic and making a fool of themselves. There are lots of friendly little night clubs and no fear of pick pockets. Krakow is a great city. I felt much more relaxed and safer in Krakow than Prague.

I was sent to a sister factory in Poland for a weeks course about this time last year. I had a hire car from Krakow Airport and the drive was about 200km. Out of about 20 people on the course I was the only one who had a hire car, the rest used taxis. The people taking the course were suprised and a little worried about me driving in their country. The driving was not a problem ( I drove on the wrong side of the road in the US for 3 months) However the other drivers were. I was overtaken on double white lines and on corners numerous times where there was zero visability! I also came across 2 accidents in the 200km! I was really suprised how low thae standars of driving was. The roads were also quite poor with big pot holes and deep ruts from the wagons.

Skiing in Scotland is not that good. Its Ok for a day or 2 but I wouldn't dream of going there for a weeks holiday. The snow is also pretty unreliable too - its usually that windy it gets blown away! It would be better to save up and get a last minute deal to the Alps.

Are any of the Polish ski resorts expected to open soon?

No, but I was at Spindleruv Mlyn in September - unfortunatly did no make it to the Polish side of the Krkonose (though I did walk along the border when hiking up Snezka!) There were a lot of ski runs and mountain cafes in the area. It looked good. The locals told me it is quite expensive though as it is very popular with Germans.

But just watch out for those occasions when there is engineering works on the railway line. It has happend to me twice when there has been an announcement (which I could not understand) the train stops at the next station and most people get off. You think great loads of room on the train, then 5 mins later a guard comes down to get all the foreigners off and onto a bus!! I think the locals find it amusing....

Depends on the length of journey and number of changes etc. I generally prefer trains because there is more leg room and you can get up and have a walk about to stretch your legs.
