News / US military... how does poland feel about the US military? [70]

The military doesn't protect us! Protect us from wat? The Iraqi's never attacked us!

If our U.S military wasn't what it is, you wouldn't need to ask those questions. We're a prime piece of realstate. I'm quite sure there are countries who wish they had this chunk of land we call home.

News / US military... how does poland feel about the US military? [70]

HAHAHAHAHA We are talking about defending us in the current world.

That IS hilarious.

It is hilarious because you asked, and I gave you an answer, right?

Of course in my earlier post about you hating the military...I made a statement that we have a great military, and we are safe because of them, yes...in the current world. I can't believe you think every country in the world likes us...tolerates us...

I'm actually quite surprised that is disputed by a fine upstanding citizen as yourself.

News / US military... how does poland feel about the US military? [70]

Oh so we have the right to go to war with people that don't like us?

Well, it is war. I of course and I'm sure the U.S.A in general sure doesn't want this!

LOL Ur making absolutely no sense!

Yes, it must be me...

U claimed that were have been protected by them for years. That our land was in danger.

I didn't say in danger. You might want to take a peek at my post. We aren't in danger, remember, our military? :)

There have been no attacks against america on american soil by a country since WW2! So they did protect us.

You and I, same page. :)

Now they don't they just fight for corporate interests!

That is something a very large percentage of the U.S will agree with you on.

Sorry for breaking your complete post down, but you had so many different statements there. I didn't want to comment in general, you had some agreeable and some not so much.

Language / Parallel texts - a useful learning resource? [7]

This isn't quite the same, but each drill like sentence has the translation. I've personally found it extremely helpful. I can break down words and meanings easier this way, as opposed to paragraphs where I'm not sure how things are placed. Maybe you know this site already, but maybe someone else can benifet.

polishgrammar The basics through more complex.

Study / Is foreign (second) language required in Polish schools? [9]

I tried searching for this, and have read some posts on language in general, haven't quite got the answer I was searching for. I am also hoping this is the proper section, since I believe it to be Culture.

Is a secondary language REQUIRED in Polish schools or this is just a small program. I've read many posts in which people say they didn't learn much in school, but other sources. Do all pre college schools teach this? Maybe regional? I am under the impression nearly all Poles under 20 can speak English, for example.

If the above is the case (required) and from the cultural aspect, can parents prevent their children from learning a secondary language, do they do that?

I am actively learning Polish, and I wish I had learned more earlier in life.

History / Fall of Communism in Poland [33]

First off, I looked hard in the search feature for this topic..I thought for sure I'd see this, so I apologize if it has been done.

When communism was finally and officially over, what were the feelings Poles had? I can't even begin to put myself in your shoes and imagine what it was like, being a complete 180 turn. Was it as simple as going to work the next day like nothing happened? Was there running and rejoicing through the streets?

Please share some experiences or thoughts.

Life / I'm an American who lived in Poland for 6 years. I'm not welcome anymore. [169]

And I am an American. I never had perm. residency. I lived entirely illegally and never earned a legal zloty.

I know you are just making a statement, but the whole idea of that in general is very interesting to me. I usually hear of the opposite. Extremist Americans roaring about Mexicans, extremists from the UK...etc. (not sure on the etc. part to be honest)

Can you or any other Americans tell us about you life in Poland illegally? How did you blend in and how did you make ends meet?

I wish I could find an honest website or blog (new to that word, still seems strange) on this topic!

USA, Canada / Are there any Polish communities in Georgia? [26]

Hi guys, just saw this thread.

I'm from Wisconsin too, and about 6 years or so I guess I moved to Atlanta (well, Lawrenceville). I was surprised to see a respectable Polish community. In fact, just 30 minutes ago I just got done having lunch at the Gimza, an authentic Polish restaurant. Very nice people! Food is very comforting too, like homemade like my mom made. I prefer my moms because...well, its my moms!

gimzapolishrestaurant.com/default.aspx

Also in Lawrenceville there is a Polish general store, and on Pleasanthill Road there is Polish Traditions Deli, a nice little Polish store. They don't have their liquor licence yet though, so don't expect to get beer while chatting it up with the owner (super nice guys!)

I'm mentioning those places because you will be able to chat it up easily because again, such nice people, they can give you all you want. And like the others mentioned, there is Polish mass on sundays at 2 in Norcross, etc. It's here. Not like where I a fro, but it's here. :)

I hope this helps some. And if nothing else, it's a good activity to go take a ride to see.

UK, Ireland / Are the Poles in England hated? [450]

Forget the UK! Come to the U.S where you are not hated. I can't say loved because to be honest, there is just no thought about it. Even with an accent you blend in.

But only if he can get a Visa, right!

Right.

And you sugestion kennitz that Poles are hated in the UK is totaly un-justified.

Read the first post? I didn't suggest this, fella. Yes, I did say forget the UK so America can have more Poles!

UK, Ireland / Are the Poles in England hated? [450]

20+ posts after mine, all of whom didn't think I said people from the UK hate Poles. I didn't say come to the U.S because the English hate you. How would I know if Englishmen don't like Poles. I don't live there, and sadly haven't traveled there yet.

But sure, if you want to dig something apart and create a fictitious situation, have a nice time!

BTW, this thread was originally... "Are the poles hated" , not that that really changes anything I guess.

I

hate

Pole

Easy to see how you made the mistake. When I read your posts thats all I see too. :)

News / Is The Warsaw Voice in British or American English? [39]

Merged: Warsaw Voice, Polish version?

I'd like to read this online newspaper, but since I am working on polishing my Polish, I'd like it to be in Polish. I can only find it in English. warsawvoice.pl

Yea I know, I could read Chicago or NY Polish papers too...but want this one.

Language / Greetings, to much respect? [23]

I was just thinking...

If I were to walk into a room with a few Poles that I show respect for, could I say the following, or is this to much:

Dzień dobry Państwo

Or this case:

Dzień dobry Pan/Pani

Are both of these ok, or just "dnień dobry" all I need? I don't mean Poles in the U.S, I've noticed thats far less proper...

Since I don't know any better, I can get away with saying the following. :)

Dzięnkuję bardzo Państwo!

News / Is The Warsaw Voice in British or American English? [39]

Ah, thats to bad. I guess I can understand though that there is a newspaper publication in English in Poland though, since (in my case) there are quite a few in Polish (and Spanish and...) here in the U.S and A. :)

I guess I'll stick with The Polish Daily news , Dziennik Związkowy.

Language / Greetings, to much respect? [23]

I don't feel comfortable enough to say that to people I don't know. I'd rather sound like a robot, and maybe give someone a smile with my robotic proper Polish (although...I like to think I sound great). I frequent Polish shop's, and always get a friendly response.

On a side note, my mom didn't know what cześć was, and she understands nearly all Polish pretty well (though, she was born in the U.S). I taught her. I'm almost a master I guess. :)

Bardzo państwu dziękuje

Language / (part 2) Polish Language Pronunciation - Sample Words and Phrases [311]

learning, Have you ever checked this out? say.expressivo.com/?lang=pl

I use it quite a bit. Even though most things I can pronouce after reading it a few times so it has a "flow" but sometimes I can't. I'll copy paste the word in and pow! nice flow.

But at the end of the words I'm with you on the n. You have many of the same questions I have.

I'm sure a master will chime in, but hope it helped, or at least will help someone.

Language / (part 2) Polish Language Pronunciation - Sample Words and Phrases [311]

Btw, does that machine pronounce fake words too

It'll try to tackle anything you throw at it. :) Real words sound a lot better though. I've noticed it even places the stress on the words where they should be. I don't know. I like it. I'll continue to use it.

Life / JUST CAME BACK FROM WARSAW! How is it over there?Just ask and I will try to answer. [4]

I'd like to know about your trip! I see you are fluent in the polish language, so that obviously makes things easier in the long run. I also saw you said from another thread you'd answer some of the doom and gloom questions.

Personally, I'd like to hear about some daily experiences and some unique ones if any occured.

Language / The use of pana/i. How often? [2]

I'm trying to get a solid grasp on this, as it never really came up. When speaking (let's say, in Poland, being respectful, etc.) to people you wish to be formal with, how often would one refer to a person as pana/i, just in the opening greeting? End of conversation? I've read a few topics on this, but not frequency of use.

ie.
Dzień dobry pana. Jak się masz? (or replace masz using pan są? or something)

I work pretty hard on this because it's extremely satisfying learning my grandparents language. And I heard once there is no such thing as a stupid question. (though I must admit, rereading this now makes me question that)

now for my stealty practice move..

dziękuję bardzo państwu

UK, Ireland / Poles singled out as responsible for increase in knife culture [39]

I just think it's just newpapers and TV reporting make it seem like there is a problem.

I live in the U.S in Atlanta where there is 400 murders per year (not including metro cities here) but everyday living is pretty nice. It'd be an intensely rare situation if you ever saw a gun fight (since most here use guns and not knives). Even in the rough sections...

So, not much of a point, but the statistics don't really make it seem as the Polish have severe problems, only haters and those who want a story.

I don't live there, but of the hudreds of stories and blogs I've read, no one ever sees this. Gangs are worldwide, so it's silliness to single this out.
