History / Potoccy Magnate Family in Politics and History [23]

Jan Potocki (1761-1815) wrote one of my favorate books "The Manuscript Found in Saragossa" (Tales from the Saragossa Manuscript, The Saragossa Manuscript). You can buy it in English on Amazon.com.

In 1965 they made an art film based on the book "The Saragossa Manuscript", which later had become a favorite of Jerry Garcia, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. All three together bought the rights to the movie and restored it. I heard that Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead) built a movie theatre in his house because he loved to watch "Saragossa" so much

USA, Canada / Gas prices in America [127]

Can someone explain to me how come the prices of gas have so little to do with the prises of oil per barrel? Last year the oil was $75/barrel and the gas cost $3.50/g. Now the oil is $100/barrel and the gas is $3.00... It makes no sense! Unless, of course, the oil companies can manipulate the prices the way they feel fit at any moment...?

USA, Canada / The 2nd Amendment (USA), the right to own guns [261]

Oh yeah, it is true; it's easier to shoot yourself in a head rather then let's say jump off a bridge, but according to the list above - there are more suicides per capita in "non-gun" countries then in the US.

I have a feeling that his motivation to be so vigilant in this subject may have been different then just a conviction to the cause of a gun-free society.

Here is the list again. Obviously the right to own a gun has very little to do with the suicide rate:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate

You know what's funny? It looks like the worst factor in the suicide rates is... speaking Russian!
6 out of the top 10 countries have Russian as one of their official languages:

1. Lithuania
2. Belarus
3. Russia
4. Kazakhstan
8. Latvia
10. Ukraine

Bubba, why are you so worried about my country? You take care of yours, I take care of mine. You don't like our system, do not visit, that's all. Thanks for the concern, anyways!

Wikipedia's data is totally different.

Too busy getting stoned to think about suicide!

USA, Canada / The 2nd Amendment (USA), the right to own guns [261]

I think you could describe this whole argument as the personal freedom vs. a need for a safe society.
For instance, you could ban alcohol and make the society safer, but many (not all) societies prefer to take the route of personal freedom in this matter. They do that despite knowing that some people will get into fights, accidents, become alcoholics or even die. Some other cultures have baned alcohol, making live safer, but less free.

Same way, you can ban firearms and make your society safer, but less free. The choice belongs to us.

Whatever Bubba, I just pointed out that when you are out of arguments you're stooping down to personal attacks.

As I said, I am rather neutral on this issue. I wouldn't mind if there was a ban on firearms, although I would have to give up my handgun and my shotgun. The thing is, how do you take away guns from the low-abiding citizens who do not want the ban? And most people in this country DO NOT want such a ban.

I bet that many countries with a firearm ban have a much higher suicide-by-jumping-under-the-train rate. Should they ban trains then?

Or maybe it makes no freaking difference, because if someone wants to end it, they'll find a way?

It's a horrible tragedy and my hart goes out to the victims families.

Nevertheless there will be some who will point out that a major tragedy like this one probably happens only about once a year in a Nation of over 300 million. Also, if the mall security or the victims where allowed to CCW (Carry Concealed Weapons) this might not have happened at all.

I am a responsible gun owner myself, although rather neutral on this issue. I am really not sure if we should or not ban firearms in the US. I'm not so sure if we even could ban'em. It would never fly in here, people simply do not want it.

I think that the Brady Law was OK w/ me, assault weapons ban is OK with me, so is the waiting period to purchase a firearm, background check and all that, but I don't think a total ban on guns is even possible in this Country. Most of the people are against it.

News / Alchemy Polish vodka commercial - "Polaks innovations" [48]

I bet you when they first aired this "rabbi shalom commercial" there was some Jewish Przemas screaming murder because he felt offended by gentiles stereotyping Jewish rabbis as "cutters and trimmers" (lol).

It's offensive to you because you let it be offencive to you. Cheer up.

Przemas, that's only what you think - that's because you're over-freaking-sensitive about stupid crap like this!
You see, I think every minority has that over-sensitive group, crying and wining about stupid sh;t like this. have some sense of humor! If you can't laugh at yourself, you can't laugh at all.

Life / Animosity between Poland vrs. Polonia? [98]

those who vote could well be voting for their future. A future when they return to Poland.
People who have no intention of returning shouldn't vote in my opinion.

I agree with you 100%. If you don't think of moving back to Poland, then do NOT vote.

Life / Animosity between Poland vrs. Polonia? [98]

It's all about envy and jealousy. People in poland know how easy life is in canada, for example, compared to poland. An educated or skilled(mechanic, electrician, etc..) canadian can live a very comfortable life in this country. In poland, this is not the case. Doctors(800zl/month), teachers, professors, engineers make next to nothing. This is not limited to poles though, most of the people on this planet would do anything to live like the average canadian.

But what happens when you go to visit the Old Country? Don't you talk about your family living in a large house, with maybe a swimming pool and a couple of cars, don't you show pictures, tell'em how much you make? And all that while visiting someone who's appartement is the size of your bedroom closet and he lives there with a wife, two kids and in-laws.

Maybe a little sensitivity would be in order? maybe if we didn't throw the money at their faces by bringing each and every one a "present"?

No wonder they feel envious!

You see I don't have a Polish Passport but I was born in Poland and I've been told by this one dude I work with that to register a copy of the birth certificat is enough. I didn't vote anyway - wouldn't know who is who in Polish politics.

Sadek, in your opinion is American Polonia the biggest problem, bigger then lets say Australian, Ukrainian or French, or are they all pretty much the same?

No. Only the ones who have British citizenship. Same for Poles.

I believe that last Polish elections they had here (US) you didn't need a Polish Passport or any other documents. All you had to do was to say you were Polish. That's all.
