UK, Ireland / Scotland encouraging immigration. [90]

You shouldn't have a bunch of kids because of greed.

Doesn't need to be based on greed. It is called incentive. The province of Quebec provided a variety of incentives (cash, tax relief, subsidized day care) to promote a higher birth rate. Guess what... It worked.

USA, Canada / POLAND -- A RETIREMENT HAVEN FOR POL-AMS? [30]

I've heard a lot of retirees are going to Costa Rica

A website with a focus on retiring abroad
internationalliving.com

They don't really have a lot to say about Poland (that I could find anyway)....

I still think their perspective is a valid one. David's status does fit your original context:

These are both Polish-born who may have spent 30-40 years in America as well as US-born who would effectively be moving to a different country

His lovely wife Joan, not so much.

Also, I know people who have been out of Poland for as little as 15 years, who find it hard to adjust going back for visits, let alone living there. Things have changed dramatically in that time.

News / could someone explain about finance shops please [11]

I have been in situations where payday has been monthly, semi-monthly, bi-weekly and weekly. Just depends on the employer.

Regardless (or is that irregardless?), some people may find themselves in the situation where they need to access this kind of "service".

Could it be like the Payday Loan schemes we have here in Canada?

Somebody with a job, but is very short on money presents his ID, proof of employment and a copy of a pay stub to the payday loan company. The company verifies all of the said information and makes a loan to the person who is short of money, on the premise that when the next pay comes in, they will pay off the loan. In the mean time extortionary interest rates are charged on the loan.

The sad thing is, once you get started, it is almost impossible to get off this "roller coaster". Think about it. If you are so broke that you need next week's pay today, how are you ever going to get ahead again, when the fees are so high, and you are constantly living off of next week's pay?

This practice is currently under review here in Canada.

USA, Canada / POLAND -- A RETIREMENT HAVEN FOR POL-AMS? [30]

There is an interesting blog, published by a retired American of Polish descent, who also happens to be a member of PF. He is keenly interested in geneaology, and moved to Poznan well over a year ago with his wife. It's interesting to follow his day to day activities, adventures and misadventures.

You can read it: david-polanddavid.blogspot.com

UK, Ireland / Recruitment agencies advertise for Polish only workers [162]

nasty cheap imports from 3rd world countries, that fall apart in 2 minutes, because the people making them have no pride in what they do!

Or because of fear of a beating or losing their job, they need to get the numbers out, in order for it to remain cheap and nasty.

Life / Why do a lot of Polish people stare and why is good personal hygeine shunned? [108]

I have also noticed that in the US and Canada people who shower once a day tend to do in in the morning. That doesn't seem logical to me at all.

I get nasty bed-head in the morning. It makes me uglier than usual. A shower in the morning also tends to wake me up, and I feel fresh. If I get filthy enough during the day, I will have a quickie in the evening, so as not to soil the sheets.

Life / Do dogs need a muzzle in Poland? [10]

Is that a reason to wear a muzzle on her?

If she is big enough to cause damage to another dog, has an nervous temperament, and is prone to bite, then yes, a muzzle is a good idea.

Love / WHY DO YOUNGER POLES FEAR MARRIAGE? [6]

Can't say that it is a uniquely Polish phenomenon. Many kids today want to finish school, bum around for a year, start and get well established in a career before they settle down. There are so many more women in the workforce now (compared to 40 years ago...), and in more senior positions in corporations. They feel the need to out-compete men, just to be seen as "on the same level as them", that time devoted to family falls by the wayside. This is common in Canada and the US.

Love / Polish honey's rules and regulations [14]

Unless the guy is a certified financial planner or professional debt counsellor, don't do it. There are plenty of free services out there if you are in too deep.
