Józef Hieronim Retinger was a WWII Polish political adviser and a founder of the European Movement instrumental in the founding of the European Union.

Retinger was Eminence Grise to General Sikorski and the Polish-government -in-exile and in 1944, he parachuted into occupied Poland at age 56, with Tadeusz Chciuk-Celt, in Operation Salamander. Retinger was the oldest of the trained cichociemni to parachute back into Poland. His precise role in WWII is still very much shrouded in mystery. When the RAF dakota was picking up the V2 rocket parts from Poland under Operation Wildhorn III to ship them back to England the orders were that if the Germans discovered the operation Retinger was the priority— all else and everyone else were expendable.

Such was the mystery surrounding Retinger's role with the Polish Government and his secret mission in Poland that the AK who were not informed about the nature of the mission totally mistrusted Retinger and repeatedly sabotaged it; Retinger was robbed of his papers and prevented from boarding an urgent return flight from Poland codenamed Operation Wildhorn II. Rogue elements within the AK (Home Army) even ordered Retinger to be 'liquidated' during summer of 1944. Several attempts were made on his life, the last being when an AK nurse named Izabela Horodecka, who was assigned to Unit 993-W of the Home Army (which specialised in targeted killings) was to give him a lethal substance but she adminstered only about half the dose. So Retingner survived the poisoning, but was delayed by two months in returning to London, and he was still paralysed for a few months afterward. Cichociemni Marek 'Celt' had to carry him on board the RAF dakota during Operation Wildhorn III, Retinger arrived safely back in England along with cases of captured V2 rocket parts and several Polish intelligence agents. Retigner's mission reports were not documented and as he reported directly (and only) to the Polish P.M. the exact nature of his missions are not preserved.

Your right it is helpful. Klimon Solowiecki's web-site is a perfect example of Polish anti-semitism at work. IMO Poland's Ministry of Education should use Solowiecki's web-site and those like Polonica.net (which has also been quoted from on PF) as examples of how Polish antisemites are antiPolish in its new school curriculum set up to curb antisemitism in Poland.

If you really want to do something you find a way make it happen—there is always an excuse to do nothing.

I can assure you it will not.

Even the recent film 'Katyń' did not stir up any debate outside of Polish communities. To have had an impact in the Amercian market 'Katyń' unquestionably should have been produced with an English soundtrack as well as Polish. This was a greatly missed opportunity for Poland if it is important for non-Poles to understand the non-Jewish Polish experience of WWII.

The same will be true of a film of " General Nil" if it is not also being made with English soundtrack.

I saw this film when it was presented at the Los Angeles Polish film festival in California year before last. Unfortunately the audience was almost entirely Polish, and most Americans don't like sub-titles.

The History Channel would be willing to look at a life-story documentary leading from Pilcecki's giving himself up to be imprisoned in Auschwitz, the resistance movement he set up, the reports smuggled to London on camp conditions and the extermination of the Jews; his escape from Auschwitz and part in the Rising; volunteering to try and establish anti-communist resistance cells; his arrest and subsequent state execution; his "rehabilitaion" by the state after communism and the efforts (or lack of them) by Polish governments to put on trial those involved in his state murder.

Back to the topic. Why would Polish Ministry of Eduction feel the need to "introduce new teaching materials for Poland's middle schools on Thursday in an effort to combat anti-Semitism?" if anti-Semitism in Poland was not such an issue? Is this initiative a vote winner in Poland? Is there much debate in Poland about whether the Polish Ministry of Eduction should be wasting public resources on something that isn't needed?

I have. If you have a copy you will see Stefan Weydenfeld is interviewed. He wrote the book 'Ice Road' that I recommended you should read. It is a good memoir of his time as Polish deportee to Kvasha, in USSR.

Perhaps this is a language issue—sewers being underground therefore the shooting of survivors was underground in the sewers as opposed to shooting "the underground" survivors— don't be too harsh it is a simple mistake to make :-)))

Well Sokrates here's something new you can learn today about one such Soviet 'liason officer' from someone who met him face-to-face during the Rising:

page 386.

"...An early sensation was the arrival of a Captain of the Soviet Intelligence Service, Constanty Kalugin, who reported to the High Command of the Rising. On August 5th he sent a telegram via London to Stalin asking for help. I also read his appeal to German units formed of Soviet soldiers who had been taken prisoner-of-war; urging them not to take part in the fighting against the Rising on pain of death. The telegram Kalugin sent to Stalin received no reply."

Andrzej Ulankiewicz a former solider of AK battalion 'Parasol' defending the Cherniakow bridgehead now living in USA mentions fighting alongside a soldier of Berling's Polish Army (WP) in his unpublished memoir 'Parasol'. You could contact him via the Warsaw Rising museum if you would like him to confirm this directly to you.

That AK battalion 'Parasol' was linking up with Berling's Polish Army is mentioned in passing on warsawuprising.com/witness.htm

Korboński also records Berling sending two battalions of Polish 1st Corps across the Vistula to the Cherniakow bridgehead only for most of them to be cut down by German machine gun fire. Fighting Warsaw-page 388.

No its not a lie. Defiance is an entertainment not a factual documentary. Based on a "true story or true events" doesn't mean based the whole story or on all the facts and if anyone can't tell the difference they must be really intellectually challenged.

This project has a budget of just £250,000—a museum is likely to be several millions with ongoing annual running costs.

BTW. I am presently looking for additional finance for a documentary about life of Capt. Witold Pilecki—budget is minimum £300,000 to produce a one hour programme :-)

No—not since the Polish-Soviet war in 1920.


Didn't some of Berling's Polish 1st Corps paddle across the Vistula to help? But they were mown down by German fire not Soviet bullets. Or do you refer to some other information? There were also a couple Russian liason officers that were parachuted into the Polish lines—so they weren't being gunned down by Soviets?
