Life / Polish Youth - are they violent? [71]

Of course I don't want to sterotype, but I noticed a lot of Young males walking around Warsaw with this hilarious macho air, their arms spread apart and everything as if they were super buff (they are often pathetically skinny.) A lot of young males here just look agressive too but it always looks like they are trying a bit too hard. Are many of these guys hooligans? Sometimes they taunt me (I'm black as my avatar shows) and I know that one day I'm gonna snap, I'm mostly afraid of getting in trouble with the police, and/or turning some stupid gang of hooligans against me, and the problem with losers like that is that they usually need weapons so I definitely don't want to get stabbed. Another thing is that almost every day I notice blood on the street, though I can't tell if its young people fighting, or drunk old bums.

Experiences anyone? What do you Poles have to say about that, and what is like like on school playgrounds in Poland?

Life / How easy is it to get into trouble with the Police in Poland? [26]

I haven't interacted with Police yet, but the Bus controllers have been super nice to me on account of not speaking english. The three times I had to get on with out paying they controlled and each time they just blurted something out (it probably wasn't very nice) and walked away.

History / Why has Poland been attacked so often by its neighbors? [180]

The hundred years war cost us 1/3 of the population and let the whole country devastated (worse than WWII)
That all changed to the better only 1871!

Do you hear Germans whine all the time?

Yes, the rise of German Pan nationalism, Hitler and all that. Their cruelty was their form of whining about WWI and whatever other things that pissed them off. So they tried to kill as many people as possible.

History / Why has Poland been attacked so often by its neighbors? [180]

Well at the beginning the new US states were stuck in the middle of French and Spanish territory. Which became once the French Revolution began. That's one of the reasons why the Louisiana Purchase was so important. On top of that there were a bunch of aggressive Indian tribes rightfully attacking Americans stealing their land.

History / Why has Poland been attacked so often by its neighbors? [180]

Looking around the Warsaw Centrum, one can easily imagine being in any of the big European cities. Fancy cars drive all around you, young trendy hipsters prance up and down the sidewalk just like they do in New York, Paris, etc. (Some of them don't prance, they just strut in that "I'm to sexy for my country" way. Just like all the other stuck-up hipsters of the Western world.)

There are huge shopping malls, tons of restaurants, an efficient transportation system (depending who you ask,) and as an English teacher, I've seen many spiffy flats in various parts of Poland (then again I make a point to aim for the rich clients.)

While it surely has its own kinks and eccentricities, (like the single subway line, or the sprawling senior population, or the popularity of cats, or the...) It's just like any other major city I've been to.

An ignorant foreigner like me for example, would have no clue that but only a few decades ago, within the lifetime of many of its citizens, Warsaw was wrecked through and through, sandwiched as it was between two demented tyrants, Hitler and Stalin, who both made it a personal matter to see Poland destroyed; the result was that Warsaw took quite a beating.

In fact, one would be surprised to learn that Poland's history is an extraordinary tale of survival against the assholish warmongering of Various Russian and German empires. In the same period when Warsaw was levelled during WWII, Poland had much of its intelligentsia shot dead almost one by one at Katyn, by soviet zombies who used to be men. Furthermore, Poland was the victim of ethnic cleansing, 3million of its Jews, 3 million of its non Jews. That was a shock for me to learn. As an American who has to bear Jewish whining about the Holocaust, I just though the Holocaust was when Hitler killed 6 million Jews, without any idea about Polish ethnic-cleansing.

A quick Wikipedia search and you learn that Warsaw "experienced numerous plagues, invasions, devastating fires and administrative restrictions on its growth." Having learned American history in school, I knew that shortly after the US was created, other countries followed its example, one of them being Poland with its May 3rd constitution. A good thing, but I never knew what happened afterwards. I never knew that Poland was then attacked by its neighbors, and erased from the map for over one hundred years.

Yet despite being one of the most embattled group of people in Europe, The Poles somehow got their act together and reestablished Poland as one of the major economies of Europe. Wow.

Yet I never hear a peep out of the mouths of Poles "we've had to fight everyone to survive,,,blah blah blah." Though I guess that mostly old people would whine about that, but seeing that I don't speak Polish, I never hear of it. I guess the Poles are made of tougher stuff than most of us.

So to that I say...

Na zdrowie!

Life / What is there to do in Warsaw?? [37]

I HAVE explored a bit, and I must say that Warsaw isn't a great place to just go around for a walk BUT, that might just be because I chose some crap places to explore. I live in the centrum so that's mostly what I've seen, I've seen the old town which is cool, but that gets old. (no pun intended.)

Love / BLACK GUYS POLISH WOMEN [809]

Well I'm a black guy from New York, And When I walk around with my Polish girlfriend I get grilled from all sorts of people, guys, girls, young and old. Sometimes I even feel like the birds are like "wtf??" I was once told at a house party that I'm smart and cool because i'm american, but that "here the blacks are mostly african and they are stupid, we really don't like them." I was like wtf?? I almost wanted to swim back to my beloved statue of liberty.

Life / What is there to do in Warsaw?? [37]

Ok perhaps I should ask what it is that most people age 20-25 do for fun in Warsaw beside going to bars and nightclubs?

For example, in New York you could take a horse-carriage ride around the park, or take a small boat ride in one of the small lakes inside Central Park. You could go to the pier where they would have fun stuff happening on random people's boats, just walking around would be fun, checking out neighborhoods like Chinatown, Harlem, the financial district, etc... you could go catch some street performances around Union Square or further downtown, and I could go on.

Life / What is there to do in Warsaw?? [37]

Hey I've been living in Warsaw since February, but all I've done is work. My girlfriend and I would like to do some interesting activities here in Warsaw, or at least do some interesting sighteeing, but what can we do? So far I've found out that the zoo here in Warsaw is worth checking out, I want to check out the Chopin museum. I missed the free museum night festivities, but if there are any other things like that that would be cool to know.

Thanks.

Life / Poles' tolerance towards other Races [190]

How can Poland have too many foreigners when it is almost 100% Polish? Why should ANY country be 100% homogenous? The world used to be like that, and it just made some people come up with the idea that one group HAD to be stronger, more intelligent, superior or closer to god than the other. Therefore, one group should be kings, while the other would be slaves

Also, to LESSER - SOUTHERN - Z-DARIUS etc; how can you disagree with this point? The very ideas of racial/cultural purity you are advocating resulted in the mass killings of millions of Poles, the history of your own country, and of other unfortunate victims of genocide disprove the idea that each "kind" should stay in its own box, with it's own people, it just creates antagonism. We're all on this planet together trying to get through the same problems for the same goals - show a little awareness, compassion and respect!

Life / Poles' tolerance towards other Races [190]

Wow I guess this thread is pretty old and obsolete, but I just saw this movie "Katyn" about the indiscreminate massacre of Poles during WWII something that never gets talked about where I'm from, (the US.) So here I was feeling all bad for Poles who had their country and ethnicity completely savaged not so long ago, and now I see this thread. I know this is just a handful of dudes but it just doesn't make sense.

Anytime two people want to sleep together, especially if it's without a condom, they should get tested. When they don't and get Aids, it's not because they slept with an African, but because they had unprotected sex with a stranger. - which is 'f'-ing retarded. Africans emigrate to many countries, in Switzerland for example where I spent some time, and there's no Aids epidemic there. Other than that, it's great that Poles would mix with other races, it's kind of sad that this country is so homogenous, it means that people HAVE to get out to feel worldly.

Poland needs more blacks, asians etc, it would make the whole place more tourist-friendly, tourism is good for culture and economy, etc. I met some Polish guy here who plays in an African folk music band, he really likes that stuff so he's happy that there are Africans here to share that interest with. And there's an audience for it here too, which means that thousands of people are happy to be exposed to different cultures/lifestyles, etc.

Life / How easy is it to get into trouble with the Police in Poland? [26]

Hey, I've complained about this elsewhere, but since my arrival in Poland three months ago I've had to deal with more than my fair share of stares, finger pointing, and as of today, name calling ("czarny" because I'm black.) So taking a walk is pretty tortuous and it's not like in New York where I could make a funny face or comment if someone stared at me and just deal with their reaction. Being here, I'm afraid of getting into a fight because 1: I don't want to feed the "violent black man" stereotype, and 2: I feel that if I were to get into a fight, about 100 other poles would jumb in to kick my ass, and 3: I don't know what could happen with the police should they get involved.

Are the cops hard-asses here? And now that I've just crossed the 3 month limit, would any encounter with the police mean immediate deportation?

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

The weird thing about Poland is how RUDE they are in the streets. note that I stress "in the streets" because the Poles I've met face to face and spoken with have been great and very accomodating.

But other than that, walking around in the street is no pleasant stroll. I'm black so people just grill the life out of me no matter what, and if I hold my polish girlfriend's hand they even point sometimes or shake their heads (older people mostly.). In New York people would stare at me, but then if I would stare back they would look away, not to be rude. But here, even when I stare back they continue to stare, they just don't stop. Also, people are rude because they don't say thank you or excuse me (they do but rarely compared to New York and other parts of Europe.) I've been pushed around a lot, I've stood in line at the grocery store and have had people trying to skip ahead of me.

Another strange thing is the sheer number of disgruntled senior citizens. There are so friggin many of them that there is no point of sitting down in a bus, cuz you have to get up immediately for them.

Another strange thing is that you can't buy tickets for the Train or bus. For a first time visitor this is super strange. There was nothing to tell me where to buy bus rides, thank god my girlfriend knew that they sold them at random stores. Makes no friggin sense.

Also you're not supposed to tip. I'm a generous tipper whenever I can because I used to do that stuff, and my girlfrien looked at me real strange when I wanted to tip the waiter 10.- which is like 5 bucks.

USA, Canada / Lose passport to extend my stay, must return to the US [7]

I can announce whatever I want it's a hypothetical question, Y'all don't know my name, Border patrol isn't monitoring this message board, nobody gives a heck. I just called the polish embassy in Washington, they transfered me to some dude who obviously just woke up and who told me to just cross into Ukraine and come back in, and I'll get another 90 days. So there's Polish rigor for you. It's just a question anyway, It doesn't mean I'm actually going to do it.

P.S. by the way, do not cross the border into Ukraine in hopes of getting another 90 days. This used to be okay but the rules have changed as of January. I told the guy that at the Polish embassy and he said that it's still possible to do it because Poland is a new EU/Shengen member and that the new rules aren't in force yet. But that must be ********.

USA, Canada / Lose passport to extend my stay, must return to the US [7]

I just realized that I must return to the U.S. much sooner than I was told. What would happen if I reported my passport as lost or stolen? I would get a new passport with no Polish stamp in it correct? And this would mean I would get to stay longer, correct?

If anyone has any info it would be much appreciated thanks!
