Life / is it easy to live in Poland? [58]

What makes me sick is how all you Poles are so stupidly patriotic..

What about the americans?.. one thing which makes poland looks outdated is the dull grey colors of housing blocks.

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

Or the number 7 gets crossed in the middle.

yeah, when you see a seven crossed, you say to yourself they must be polish!

Polish men are generally very polite and well mannered, most still maintain the traditon of kissing the hand when greeting a female

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

I think that women really understand these days, that it is like a suicide not to work at all outside of your home/ family. What happens if your husband is dead or become unemployed, even if your family is doing very well now... And what about retirement compensation for women who never worked in their lives?

Sorry maati, could you explain what you mean?

I agree that the polish "babcia" now plays a more low key role than before, "babcia" is better remember as the one handing out sweets and money for a ice cream

News / What are your 10 fave things about Poland? And 10 least favourite? [130]

OK, here is my list:

I'm surprised that you haven't made any reference to the church and the catholic faith which has been handed down over a thousand year period. hmmmmmmmmm

Seems poles are showing less and less interest in their faith....poles will become poorer for this...

Polish people buy 2 or 3 cans of beer at a time, in oz you buy a slab (24 cans) or block (30) cans....if you buy a slab or a block it is much cheaper than buying a single can/bottle ...no discounts for buying bulk in poland!

Matyjasz.

I liked your post.. thats the ideal and it is hoped all polish people could appreciate all this...unfortunately we live in the real world and nothing will ever be perfect, we need to work on it....making critical comments about poland doesn't mean you are anti poland, it could be that love poland and you want things changed for the better!.

Its a pity that the 800,000 odd poles who have left poland to work overseas haven't appreciated poland and have sought greener pastures?

Real Estate / Poland Property...should I be scared [127]

mmm interesting points mmm...it is still crucial for people living in poland to buy into real estate asap...the point that in poland the languge is mainly polish, it would follow that very few non poles would be willing to settle into poland because of cheap homes, employment, way of life and future prospects would need to be considered.

I can only warn people buying investment properties in poland not to take any notice of the spin made by real estate agents that things are booming, the places where money has been made is out of reach to the average pole and relates to blue chip properties in krakow and warsaw..

A new entry into polish real estate is people coming in from Ireland and GB setting up real estate companies eager to make a quick killing.. the only casualty will be the poor bunny carrying the last package.

I have been monitoring some real estate property sites and some properties are still not sold after 2 years?

I have owned a property in Poland for about 3 years.Since it is in a Rural area it is almost impossible to judge the rise in price(my valuation varies between 20 and 70%).

could you give a specific example please.

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

sorry sir, I was making the point that you would line up in a queue and after a while you seem to be getting further and further from the front...that has been my observation.

Have you noticed when you queue up for something in poland, you may be at the front of the line but as times goes on you slowly progress to the rear..

In a fast-food restaurant (like Mc Donalds or KFC) you need to order like for two people not to leave hungry. The food portions/sizes are like 40% smaller than in the US. Good thing for people who care to be slim .

good point, there also much smaller than the ones in oz, the chips/fries in poland are not nice...too soggy

One thing I don't like about polish society is the way people have to address other people by pani/ pan, mgr engineer etc...in oz that finished years ago...everyone is called by there first name...no barriers...I once address a person by his first name and received a bucket load of abuse..(the usual spin- have you no respect etc)

Be prepared...this will change in poland one day

Often you see pieces of sand-paper toilet paper floating around in the woods and when you go mushroom picking, you have to watch what you're stepping on!!!

:)I've been caught standing on some brown smelly matter, I can relate to seeing used toilet paper scattered around the forests (thats probally why mushrooms taste so nice in poland) and the sight of naked bums poping up and down as you aproach.

Let's fire up them brains cells and think of some good things about Poland!

Lets start the ball rolling..

!.. The faith of the polish people and role of the Catholic Church.. Poland has a long proud history, its people over long generations have been faithful to the church and have maintained Christian values...(the old generation pole is second to none)

As poles move away from catholic values the poorer the country is becoming.

2. Polish folk law and music....excellent

3. Taste of fruit, vegetable, milk products, berries, and mushrooms..

a lot of forests, very often just outside city
- polish countryside is beautiful!!!

Most countries have nice countrysides, poland is nice, us is nice, ireland is nice, nz is nice, oz is nice...take your pick..... Please remember the polish country side is being polluted by overseas industries, local people who dump there rubbish etc...

USA, Canada / Health Care - from Poland to USA [5]

Sure, I would expect that all people have free access (or for a small fee) to health insurance like it's now in Poland

I'm not sure that this is correct information for full time residence who have never worked in poland.

Work / Pay, salary in Poland. [54]

[quote=Lech Koschinky, Post #45 ]There are a lot of rather simple generalisations here. Answers are rarely simple. Most of the Poles I know are scraping along on 5 to 19 zl per hour.

I know people who earn 1000zl (take home) and are pretty happy....seems that income is highly taxed in poland.

Law / What are the current market gaps in Polish business? [18]

Probally the most secure business in poland would be setting up a funeral palour...the current practice of holding dead bodies in private homes till burial is outdated and a health risk..

the other one is providing child care facilities, .....easy to set up,,, most couples now work full time and need someone to look after the kids....(this business is easy to set up and is a growth industry in oz....)

Life / Retire in Poland - Good or Bad Idea? [74]

Arrgghh,

Your comments are pretty spot on, although a lot of people in other countries only existance is drink and watch TV, the reason why people drink in poland is that they see no future in what they do...

Life / Wedding in Poland - my experience [39]

Thats the Polish way of life......Polish weddings are great,,,, great food, drinks, music and being able to see people relax and enjoy themselves.... the practice of smoking in Poland is unacceptable and it is only time when somebody will get sued for damages at one of these events....hmmmmmmmm

History / What if Poland was not in the socialist system? [36]

is it different in Australia????????

iwona I'm not trying to speak negative, sure there are a lot of drug addicts. and people who find it hard to live due to persoanl issues, ie depression, family conflict.. but the current welfare system provides good income support and rent assistance, if a person lives in the gutter it is generally his choice, (ie he spends his welfare payments on drugs, grog, or poker machines) The drunks who are homeless are looked after by various charities ie St Vincent DePaul society, salavation army etc. no person has died due to lack of food.

The current unemployemnt rate in oz is 4.8% and as mentioned in previous post oz needs skilled people and is crying out for good people.

Poland has not the safety net and a lot of people are left to use there own resources, which means homeless people are left to freeze in winter...

I'm sorry that is the sad reality,, I get very upset when I hear from people who are the new rich in poland who have it very well who cannot see the plight of there struggling brother!

History / What if Poland was not in the socialist system? [36]

LEF.......................I think you need to do a little more research before you spout off at your keyboard again about something you haven't got a clue about.

LOL.... Next time your in poland, drive around the suburbs of a night time and see how many homeless people there are around, visit people who live in blocks and see how many people have all these "goodies".. shops may have a variety of goods, but how many poles can afford to buy them?......

Sure if you are the new rich in Poland, you can afford anything?
