Language / Your Funniest / Strangest / Sadest Moments with the Polish Language [63]

Polish dupa means something else entirely...oops..!

LOL - i know this one

cheepcar

So who's going to enlighten me?

oh wish had been there to witness that??

It was just weird at the time. Only that evening at dinner in Restauracja Bamberka on Stary Rynek, she said [tin donkis] to the waitress who brought the menus. We thought she was joking, and then we all broke to pieces when she told us what was actually going on! :D

Language / Your Funniest / Strangest / Sadest Moments with the Polish Language [63]

Hi Everybody. Have no idea whether there had been a thread like this or not. If so, admin will move it soon enough. I also thought of posting it in the off-topic lounge, but these should be strictly language moments. If I'm luckier than with the smileys, admin will leave it in the language section ;) If not, then he'll move it anyway. Whatever happens, here goes my funny moment.

We had South Africans taking part in a fair in Poznan. On the stand, we taught them a few basic Polish words - the thank you's and you're welcome's and so on. If you say 10 cows in Afrikaans, it is "tien koeie", pronounced: [tin kuje]. This is close enough for Afrikaans speaking people to learn "dziękuję" relatively easily. On Saturday, late afternoon, as the day moved on and we became more and more tired, the one lady forgot about ten cows, and knowing that it was some farm animal with four legs, replaced the cows with donkeys (especially for Osioł). So she started saying to people [tin donkis] in stead of [tin kuje] - and then couldn't understand why they look at her in such strange ways :)

Would be interesting to hear your moments.

Language / Why do people want to study Polish? [90]

Why do people want to study Polish?

I am from SA, and now living in Poland for 16 months. Still have 2 and half years left here. You need to learn Polish if you live here. It's easier to get around. It's easier to be accepted among Polish people. I always lighten up if I come accross someone learning or speaing my own language. Polish people are the same. I love the language anywy, no matter how hard it is - one of the most interesting ones in the world, for me :)

Feedback / The issue of [not] writing in Polish on the forums (part 2) [45]

Do you always respond to everything you read? I don't but it doesn't necessarily mean that if I don't respond that I'm not interested :)

the sky isn't going to fall from an inside joke or crack made here or there.

No, but I might LOL at the joke too :)

translate it myself.

Sorry, foreigner, but I would not yet be able to translate myself, even if I wanted to. I'm learning, and if you're a native speaker, or speak polish well enough to translate - many of us are only learning polish. Thanx to a lovely forum (although without smileys ;( ) i can learn, be serious and have fun in a (mostly) relaxed environment, and I get so frustrated when I see only polish text. As Polly says - add the english, and it would be no problem - a learning exp!

Love / how can i get him to fall in love with me again? [43]

my buddies polish, canadian, british, german will all testify nothing is more attractive in a woman than her having interests and hobbies that transcend the superficial. Active chicks, informed chicks, chicks who are passionate about life- they attract men, they inspire men.

at last, some sense from a man. i've only met one guy like that before - he's now my hubby ;)

News / A Pole to start the HIV AIDS epidemic? [52]

I know that there is a very high level of Aids in Eastern Europe and that Poland does have a higher than usual level. It might be due to the fact that they sleep around a lot and procreate like rabbits or because they do not have funding for their old hospitals.

Where the hell do you come from?

that is becouse you are not inteligent enough

Where the hell do you come from? Why don't you go back there?

I do wish trolls could for once try to argue with the backup of some real facts/arguments? But then again - if that was the case, they wouldn't be trolls, would they?

'będą bakłażany i ser'

Oh, of course! będą in stead od są, which it would be in the present tense?

Language / Conjugate TO BE in polish for me? [37]

so is this correct?

Będzie bakłażany i ser?

Not sure, I would say so, but lets ask Dariusz, or one of our other language experts?

Btw, I thought you were fluent in Polish?

Language / Conjugate TO BE in polish for me? [37]

I like it. Almost as much as I like its English equivalent.
That is almost as much as I like the vegetable itself.

Goes very nice with melted CHEESE!

Life / What type and brand of cars do Polish people like? [51]

good idea to re-phrase but it still raises an interesting issue -

is the fact they drive a volvo more likely to make them boring?

or

is the fact they are boring make them more likely to drive a volvo?

i don't think it's either or, i think it's both and ... ;)

Language / What is the most annoying thing about non-native Polish speakers? [90]

I go into a shop/cafe/bar and ask for something in my passable Polish and I get the reply in English.

Warsaw too!

The other thing that really annoys me (can think of a few other words as well) is when my Polish teacher decides for me what would be too difficult for me to learn!!

drive with aweful manners, just because you drive a BM?

Shall I try to rephrase this: Some BMW drivers (esp ones with huge ones like MX5 - very beautiful btw) drive as if the fact that they drive a BM gives them the right to drive without respect and courtesy for other drivers.

as an after thought ill add that i drive with confidence and assertion - i choose my path and i take it without dillydallying on the way - i also drive with respect and courtesy

Now this is how i drive as well, so that'll be fine with me.

C, u must be a nice guy, otherwise you would have started acting like some of the trolls we sometimes have around, and we would have ended up angry with one another ;)

Talking about driving - have to go. cya later

i wouldnt ask someone if they were a racist just becasue they were from south africa

really glad you wouldn't. :-P

i also didn't ask if you behaved terribly on the road just because you have a BM - and specifically stated not all BM drivers are horrible, but some are. I wanted to know if you were one of the one's who are, but maybe I shouldn't ask, maybe I should just keep thinking you're a nice guy? Maybe you are :P (I am smiling here!)

do you think it's only in Poland? Some BMW drivers gives me the jeepie creepies though! It's like: I'm driving a BM, so I can do whatever I like! (Please note: I am not saying ALL BMW drivers, but definitely some) :(
