Language / Things Polish people who speak English language say [180]

I agree, I was just being a teacher, njc. I'm not here to nitpick but to help as this is my job.

I am really impressed with the level of writing here. Much better than many of my FCE students.

Last time instead of lately.
Advices, informations etc instead of the counters.
Forever adding 'be' in conditional sentences.
Glass instead of glasses.

There are many more

More like MOUN-Tyne I'd say.

Yes, deterMINated is another favourite :)

Present continuous instead of present simple is another one.

Its depend, instead of it depends.

An avoidance of saying s where there is one. There are two pens, read as there are two pen. Is it a vanishing letter in Poland, written in invisible ink? ;)

Comfortable, as sth monstrous. I hammer the FT sound into them.

The schwa probably means sth like a Native American tribe to them, rather than a phonetic/phonologic feature.

UK, Ireland / Recruitment agencies advertise for Polish only workers [162]

There are so many ways to view the thread. One is that Poles have it hard and deserve positive working conditions. They have to defend their Masters papers, something I never had to do. I only had progress updates for my dissertation and thesis. They also have 2 or sometimes 3 interviews for one post. We tend to have just one. Also, their disproportionate salaries.

I'm not saying that we should be all for bailing them out as their government should bear responsibility for that. However, giving people a chance in life is something that the West preaches so we should recognise that and stick by it.

Let's not blame the immigrants too much as there are so many businesspeople ruining the world and getting HUGE salaries for doing so. Redistribute the wealth and give to those who want to earn an honest living. Listen to Bill Hicks and recognise that we spend more to kill than to cure, reverse that!

Typical blown-up confidence, not in touch with reality. The other side of discrimination is choice. The Polish skillset from workers who have gone to zawodowy school is pretty impressive and some may want to use that. If people don't want it, they won't opt for it.

Love / Polish girls' obsession with marriage [124]

I believe that they make good wives for the most part. They know how to run a steady ship and are resourceful. Generalisations I know but sometimes you have to.

That's fair enough. It's an expression of the will of the people and they are taking a stand in their own way. It's not forcing them out so directly. You are helping the police do their job too. The police can't be there to stop every wrongdoing.

It's tactics on both sides. If they aren't picked up for discrimination, let the people take action.

Life / Why build a supermarket with 20 checkouts with only 3 till staff? [46]

It makes you wonder why they have 100 and 200PLN bills. The whole process of putting the goods up should be a calm one, not a rushed affair which causes tension. I pay by card most of the time (in Tesco) so the change thing doesn't matter too much.

Still, the 10-item tills must be open. There's nothing worse than being stuck behind a git with a huge trolleyful and you having 7 or 8 items only.

There is a certain 'don't care' attitude in operation. I make a point of smiling at the checkout people, just to get a response. All the people in the line were looking at me as if I was doing sth wrong. My manners and courtesy shine through, it's a shame that it isn't reciprocated in others. Too many boorish louts on the go.
