News / Poland. Sold for nothing. [341]

Come on gumi...give me more than just some foggy, mysterious hints.
What are these people? What to they want? And why???

That reminds me about your statement about Germans buying out Poland...when I ask for clarification you bring nothing...that is not enough for a serious discussion!

Well...another...as in "not the same"...you know?
Did dressed up Germans slaughter Poles to get Podolski???

My own experience.

What experience?
You must have come to know many of those peoples...how? And where?
And what is their reasoning?

by the way Bratwurst what are your views of the Gleiwitz incident

About Gleiwitz, surely with free internet and independent journalists people would have looked through that manouver soon.
But the time wasn't that developed and the relationships between us was already such that we could believe the worst...

Poland simply could not accept ceding the corridor to Germans. It would cease to be independent state.

Well...and what did you got instead?

Of course you could have made a corridor...they only asked for a railway.
But then, you are so paranoid you would even feel threatened by a railway...no surprise here!

hmm interesting views, wonder how many historians share it

Heeey...our conspiracy fan is back! :)

Looked under your bed for Germans and or Russians already?

LOL That is an oxymoron

Why?
It was a honest german concern which was important for many Germans...

sorry - even losing of the war by Germans was smart

Well..I don't think you read the posts I did or you would be know by now that I
included german politicians!

But that seems to hard for a smart kid like you, right?

Don't forget the closet...surely a Russian is hiding in there...or maybe a German bought your whole house already??? Better take another look...

Dude, that's called selective reading.

Just quoting...
But even Poles will tell you that the promises made by France and GB emboldened Warsaw to be uncompromising and not even trying to negotiate honest german questions.

Even spouting crap like "In one week in Berlin" and such...

Would Hitler had invaded anyhow if Poland had tried to negotiate? I don't know...maybe yes, but purposely antagonizing such a neighbour and trusting far away foreign countries with your safety instead is never "smart"!

The people had actually an excellent connection by boat, but it's difficult to bring in troops by boat.

Well..it wasn't difficult for the german army to bring troops without the corridor...they didn't need that for the invasion!

Danzig had 98 percent german citizens who found themselves made homeless by the Treaty of Versailles...Poles around them threatening them "Become polish or leave".

They wanted (rightfully) back into Germany or at least a good connection.

Didn't they have the right to do so?

Well..I didn't say that...but the german/polish quarrel didn't start with Gleiwitz and you must be fairly new to this board if you don't have an idea about the long discussions we already had here.

Why don't you go through the archives?

Did you know that Poland denied the Germans even a railway connection to Danzig, feeling safe behind the french/british promises? Was that smart?

bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwtwo/countdown_390831_thur_01.shtml

Countdown to World War Two: Thursday 31 August 1939

...This settlement consists of a series of demands made by Germany, namely: the immediate return of Danzig to the German Reich; a plebiscite, which will be held in a year's time to decide the future of the Polish corridor; though meanwhile the area should be evacuated by the Polish authorities, except for the port of Gdynia, which would remain Polish. Then, once agreement had been reached between the two countries, they would both demobilise their armies.

As far as we know, Poland has not yet received any official details of this plan from Germany. However, the German Government is now saying that, as no Polish envoy ever arrived in Berlin, Poland has therefore rejected these proposals.

So not smart!

Another league? Smarter than who?

I actually had the longer history in mind with Poland falling deeply after their golden age, getting partitioned and even vanishing form the map....that was not necessary.

Also wanting to brawl with the Nazis, thinking the french and brits will come and get their nuts out of the fire should the need be ("In one week in Berlin!")

Now again during the last years setting on Bush to gain some advantages but now again left hanging out to dry....all not very smart and not really necessary.

And yes Merkel is smart or she wouldn't even had made it to chancellor.
She is juggling an impossible coalition for some years now, presents Germany and her interests quite well internationally without getting in any war because of her skill to listen and to negotiate, makes Germany look good etcetcetc...

independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/merkel-named-most-powerful-woman-in-world-again-911891.html

Merkel named most powerful woman in world (again)

What an "unsmart" woman...

not even speaker.

But with that you are right...she isn't big in talking, rhetoric, posturing, chest beating, throwing tantrums, she doesn't even look like a model etc.

She prefers the quiet, friendly tones, prefering objective, businesslike policy, compromises, cooperation instead of antagonism...how stupid of her!

Poll: Merkel Most Influential European Leader

An interesting EU-wide poll came out today that will have big implications for who is chosen as the first so-called "President of Europe."

The poll, conducted by Harris Interactive among adults in the largest EU countries, found that overwhelmingly most European citizens consider German Chancellor Angela Merkel to be the most influential leader in Europ

Asked about concrete leaders, Europeans strongly favour Angela Merkel, who leads the chart in European countries.

Yes, this lady is in a league of her own!

I think this is what that fat little antagonist fears

Yeah...how stupid of him...being paranoid of an invading army...of a big, mighty neighbour...how could he!

Particularly after their little stunt last year.

What exactly happened last year Randal?
Maybe you get different news than I do?

As far as I know it wasn't solely Russias fault...

guardian.co.uk/business/2009/jan/07/ukraine-russia-gas-dispute

What is the dispute about?

Prices and politics. Ukraine, with its economy crippled, says it cannot afford to pay the $450 per 1,000 cubic metres of gas demanded by Gazprom. Russia claims it is only asking for $250 per 1,000 cubic metres, compared with $195 in 2008.

Ukraine says it is willing to pay $210 - compared with $450-$500 prevailing in western Europe. Gazprom alleges that Naftogaz, Ukraine's state energy firm, still owes it $600m for 2008; the Ukrainians dispute this.

And now knowing that poor Ukraine isn't even able to care for the pipelines and the EU has to pay for it I totally believe Russia here...Ukraine couldn't/did not want to pay.

And when you don't pay for a product it's somehow logical to me at least that you lose every right to that product...only Poles seem to see that differently...I wonder why?

So...who is to blame here Randal?
Which "stunt" did the Russins make?

Everyone soon better wake up to the fact that as these fossil energy resources start becoming depleted, things will be getting nasty.

Germany knows that and we are in a better position than many others, environmental energy being an ever growing part of our technology researches/inventions.

Germany is leading in many renewable energy fields...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renewable_energy_in_Germany

The share of electricity from renewable energy in Germany has increased from 6.3 percent in 2000 to over 14 percent in 2007.
More than 9 billion euros (US$11.31 billion) was invested in new renewable energy installations in Germany in 2006.
Some 240,000 people in Germany were employed in the renewable energy sector in 2006, especially in small and medium sized companies.

But till it becomes widely usable we prepare for the upcoming nasty energy wars with...for example...building new "veins"...instead of only complaining, protesting and screaming!

Poland better wake up soon! Germany is already wide awake...

Expansion is central goal of German government's energy policy

It’s a crazy world when we are dependent on our enemies for our wellbeing.

If your "enemy" is essential for your "wellbeing" isn't it crazy to call him "enemy" in the first place?

THAT is crazy and irrational, so polish!

And yes c*ck diversifying is essential, german firms do alot to support that, being shareholder and supporter of several new pipeline projects...whereas Poland does...what?

And why didn't you defend more diversification of the energy sources? Nostalgy? ;)

Germany tries exactly that...be it Nord Stream, South Stream, Nabucco etc.
Last year showed that Ukraine can't be trusted with the delivery, even unable to care for the pipelines, we have to repair them for ourselves...thank you!

Merkel?

Merkel is in another league...yes she is a smart politician!

They work exactly like the other companies

Exactly!
No hidden, secret conspiracy...just plain old money...

So we agree. The Baltic pipeline is for energy firms, not for the general German population :)

Erm...no public property in a non-commie state ...but hopefully I will get my gas I paid for!

All this conspiracy talks gets really boring with the time...

You're missing the point. BASF doesn't give a flying crap about the cost because the customer will pay whatever that cost is. That is where your affordability argument fails.

What point?
BASF works differently as all other energy companies in what way???

Actually, I always considered post WW2 Germany more of a a commie state than Poland ever was. I think it still is.

Well..you think thoroughly commie in believing the decision for the pipeline was an anti-polish commie government one and that Mrs. Merkel actually had a say in it because they somehow belong to the gov and that the state has the power to tell those firms what they have to do, THAT is commie thinking!

Lobbying is something else and yes, the energy sector has a big lobby and here is the evidence how wrong you are:

LOBBY: Energy firms want to make deal, want to make profit, want pipeline, lobby to get the necessary deals and treaties with the gov and everybody else they need...

COMMIE state: Orders energy firms around for political reasons if they want to or not!

Lobby: Yes
Commie state: No
Money: Yes
Politics: No

See...in easy bold words it's not to hard to understand....

...of course...you could now try to say that EON and BASF are commie companies who try secretly to isolate Poland and even try in invasion..with gazprom...later...

You'll pay or freeze.

As compared to: "Sorry I know you have paid but you will still freeze because we can't get the gas because the middleman steals it/has a fight in with the deliverer/sits on it/is unable to care for the pipeline and now they leak/*insert any other reason*" ?

And that they are profit oriented private firms is no faith but a fact.

Oh, btw. the costs of the pipeline are indeed rising and not by small change.

Yeah...how unexpected in such a long time project...nothing will ever change in all those years...how "newbie!"

A side note, I still think the Baltic pipe was a political decision.

That would make Germany a commie state where the gov makes ideological decisions.
Not to mention that Schröder and the government would have to OWN BASF or EON for that.
Boy, if that suits you...can't help you!

That's why your potatoe heads were so widely popular in Europe and no common sigh of relief was heard across Europe as the first got thrown out at last!

Germany herself has american soldiers on her soil and they pose no problems....the shield is something else.
But maybe you are hot on russian missiles in Kaliningrad?

there is no real intention of cooperation with Poland and no inteniton whatsover to treat Poland as a partner by the German official spheres. Just emtpy words from times to times.

Sorry, in my eyes it's not Russia trying to bully!

Had there been no Poland Germany would be so much better off. )

Well...sometimes I wish you were somebody elses neighbour.

But then I get reminded that most Poles are quite modern and realistic and want to cooperate or your PiS would still rule instead of being marginalized by the broad public

who doesn't share your paranoia!

There is hope! :)

You personally are brainwashed

Sure..to have another opinion of you can only mean "brainwashing", "bias" or even worse, a "conspiracy" against Poland....suuuuure!

At the moment Russia allowed for some symbolic imports of Polish meat.

Why do you want to trade meat with Russia at all if they are so mean bullies???
Maybe if you hadn't stepped on their toes so often and so gleefully you both had solved
this little spat long already?

You don't believe Polish cryptologists broke the Enigma codes either.

Where did I say that and what has this to do with this discussion?

And by the way I will find a link for that export support by the German government. And this will be my last post for you to read.

If the gas from the submarine pipeline is more expensive then the one from a land pipeline after transit fees what is the goal of building the submarine one? An economic one???

The german firms like BASF and EON are no stupid newbies. They have calculated that the costs for a fully newly build pipeline under the baltic see will still come much cheaper in the long run.

Believe me they are private profit oriented people there....no ideologues!

The Ukraine is a good example...we are dependent on them right now and what does it gets us? Uncertainty the moment the winter comes and if we want functioning pipelines we even have to pay for the repair ourselves...thank you very much!

My beef with treaty is EU president, EU foreing ministry and similar. I see it as a way to impose policies on smaller countries.

I actually don't see a great chance to ever get all EU countries to agree to the same policies...some just don't want to.

But that would be cool for an EU before the enlargement...that would had worked well.
It speaks alot for another Union...a smaller one...

you just seem not to notice one thing - we have been bullied by your friend of choice quite recently even now

Well...you are not leaving one chance go by to willfully antagonize Russia (as did the Kaczinskys with Germany too) so my compassion with you is very limited.

Remember Iraq? Couldn't wait to brown nose the US against the majority of the union.
Remember the shield? Couldn't wait to lick Bush ass against the wishes of the majority in the union, Germany and even in your own country...fully knowing that this must be seen as an agressive act in Russia.

You are so peaceful and innocent and nice and cuddly...not!

all you say is we should cooperate

How is that for an answer to your problems?

oversee Polish trouble with Russia

Because it's petty and idiotic? Remember we know what the Russians are going through with you...you are not behaving much differently with Germany! Trying to antagonize and irritate and annoy whenever you can...

btw as far as I know the time when the Russians imposed an embargo on Polish meat, German (and several other European countries) authorities started to financially support meat exports to Russia (german meat exports had been too expansive for Russians before)

Any link for that?

Interesting article: ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=39606

POLAND-RUSSIA: Once an Enemy, Always an Enemy

You better wake up soon...it's a whole new world waiting outside!

Polls consistently show that Polish popular attitudes towards Russians are among the most negative, and historians generally agree that Polish national identity relies on Russophobia. (END/2007)

Yeah...germanophobia and russophobia!

Maybe it will come to that...either you leave or we (the core countries) will leave the union.
I wonder how you will like that then..

News / Poland. Sold for nothing. [341]

There are some looming threats raised towards Ireland. Ask Irish people..

Which ones?
You seem to know all about it...tell me....

The pipeline thing again - what is the difference to German customer if the gas comes through a land pipeline or a submarine pipeline. Why Germans (authorities and poeple brainwashed by media) insist on the submarine one? Is it really of vital importance to Germany that the gas should be delivered on the sea bottom? Why is that so?

We (not only Germany but several other western European countries)need much more energy in the future as the demand always grows.
What's wrong with investing in new modern pipelines without having to pay a middle man?
And why do you care???

Poland has been put under enormous pressure to abandon the square root proposal.

What pressure?

Better Poland had searched for likeminded countries and build alliances to bring their point across. In the end it seemed Poland was all alone and had to cave in against a strong majority (NOT only Germany and France btw).

..."Poland's proposal advocating that EU member states' voting strength be calculated according to the square root of their population in millions has been rejected by 25 countries. Late in the night on 22 June, only Poland, backed by the Czech delegation, was in favour of such a system."...

That's the way a union works btw...sometimes you win, sometimes you lose..you don't get always what you want, Germany neither (treaty).

Was there any discussion at all about the shape of the new treaty?

Yes there was...and everyone can read it and make himself an image...but somehow I doubt most of the opponents did that because many problems people like you have with the EU are explicitely ruled in this treaty, giving you security and a law against abuse and more rights...but you couldn't be arsed, couldn't you.

Germany wants the treat so it must be bad by nature!

You do to assume too much.

Says you...

Your square root wouldn't had worked anyhow...

economistsview.typepad.com/economistsview/2007/10/andrew-gelman-w.html

...A quick summary of our argument: The square-root-rule is derived from a game-theoretic argument that also implies that elections in large countries will be much much closer (on average) than elections in small countries. This implication is in fact crucial to the reasoning justifying the square-root rule. But it's not empirically correct....

didn't it change things a bit?

For Germans, alot did change...that's why we want to cooperate with Russia for example instead of reliving cold war times!
It seems some Poles are still stuck in the past, feeling threatened by both, Germany and Russia...out of habit...no changes for them....

Well...aren't you excercising pressure too to get what you want? Steinberg, pipeline, voting rights etc???
Is it only allowed for Poland???

Did Germany threaten Ireland? Did they punish them afterwards? Did they throw them out? Ireland profited for years from EU-money..
BUT NOT ONE BAD WORD from us...we have accepted their decision even if many were not happy!
Compare that to Polish tantrums whenever something is percieved as not going their way...

Get a grip man! I really wish you won't get ever in a worse union as you are right now....

how do you imagine one common foreign EU policy when you seem to lead a policy of appeasement of a country several EU countries are affraid of?

With you? None at all...
As long Poles like you call their lone goal in diplomacy to "treat on toes" there will nothing worthwile develop!
You are just not constructive...

And what is wrong with a European Constitution?

I can't actually wait to see your faces when the Turks are telling you directly where to shove it!

To bad it would be the death of the EU...but then...there are the core countries who already believe the enlargement was a wrong step anyhow.
