Genealogy / Poland- Stories from the Ancestors Homeland [20]

:)

Bringing this back up to the top so more can contribute to the story section
everyone can share :)

My uncle told me about someone who was very important came to see my grandmother back during the war. he said he wasnt even allowed to come near

his home as it was surrounded by police, and streets were blocked till this person
who came to visit her left. cant remember if he said he was a boy or coming from
work, but I know he wasnt even allowed to go home.
he said he was watching and the man who left, looked like hitler with a short mustache and was wearing what looked like a uniform, but he said it could have even been

that he was famous, but from Poland.

I know he said this man was related to his mom , but he couldnt remember how, and the only thoughts that crossed my mind were that our uncle Frank who was in

phillipines serving the war had died, and maybe this was a higher ranking officer
who was family that came to tell her about it, he said no, I remember when my brother died, that was horrible day for the family. because he was the first casualty of

our city of the war which started in 1941 he died january 4th 1942.

so to this day I do not know who this person was with all the police escorts and
was here on a visa from poland to see my Grandmother .

ok story from the American homeland.

my dad had retired from fords, and he used to "go junking" is what i called it.
but he would pick up scrap metal and take it to the scrap yard to be melted and
course metals can bring you in some nice income if you bring in enough on the side.

well during my dads excurions, he along the way had found other items of use, like
chairs, to which he brought home.
my mom who always said I want new kitchen set, liked on of the chairs so she put
it in the kitchen to sit on while she was cooking, my mom was not skinny, but not
obese, anyway, she was cooking and she had been for couple hours, making
good dinners as always, she decided to rest on this chair that my dad had brought
home, my two brothers were sitting at the table playing cards, I was watching mom
and when she sat down, she sat hard and the whole chair flattened!! like what
you see on TV just splatted flat with all four legs outward!

her response to this was Son of a B**CH!!

MY two brothers couldnt contain themselfs so they started bellowing, and my dad
came out to see what happened and immediately turned back around to go back in
another room because the look on moms face was obvious that he was going to
get supper alright , but not the way he wanted it!!

moral of this story, dont trust dads chairs!!! lol.

we all still laugh about that one, at the time I had cried because I thought mom
was hurt :) I still had my heart on my sleeve then as I do now :)

my mom told me a story about my grandmother who was very superstitous <~spelling
and she said she was told to go to the local market, but had to pass thru a area where a old cemetary was. she said she was walking past the cemetary and she saw a pair of

red eyes and thought it was the devil so she ran her fanny off to get home and she was so scared. she said she begged her father to not send her anymore.

one of my great aunts had never been exposed to technology, and when the kids
went out to buy a radio (when they were first made) they brought it home to show
her that it picked up stations from all over. she grabbed it and threw it after she heard the announcer and screamed devils!!! in Polish.

History / Katyn- forgiven and forgotten? [111]

Why would Poles be embarrassed or frightened to bring it up again-repeatedly to the Russians -no-one else has- it's been made clear by the International Community that it is a Polish problem.
Of course it's high on the agenda- I repeat ,yet another attempt was made in 2006.

And they should keep on attempting till they get Russia to budge!!
yes its in the past, but they were never compensated, and no amount
of money will bring back those who died. but at least those who lost
and suffered because of it would be able to move on. its bullocks , there
will never be closure. The Govt is hiding from it. not its people.

I dont even know how those who pulled the trigger could have lived with themselfs
after the fact. with no remorse.

News / Poland over the next 10 years? [79]

I don't think it's mandatory in Poland to offer a private health insurance/benefits to its workers (like it is in the US).

Well, I think this would be a good thing for them, Some type of benefit program
that would also include the whole family, Im not sure what they have now that
is similar to this if anything at all. but I do think if they dont want to become like
western countries, maybe consider Canadas Health care system?

anything is better then nothing. and no culture is touched, only benefits for those
who need it.

you know I am not even thinking signing up seperate from employer, that is what
I meant, do employers in poland also offer this and why would they not sign up?
I can understand the expense, but even still with employers, theres some type
of fee. I guess my question should have been directed more at Why dont the
employers offer it? or do they ? and is the expense same or lower rates?

Most Poles won't sign up for that and will live without such insurance.

Why would they not sign up for it? for health care ? what types of costs are they
facing?:(

Iwona... try to look at the big picture and not be narrow minded, no one is saying Poland has not got tourist spots, it currently lacks sufficient world class motels, it will never be able to produce the high standard of goods as made in Germany, nor compete with China or India (call centres)... Iwona you seem to think different, its a wonder you don't return to Poland and put your money where your mouth is!

Lef, maybe she is upset because you are focusing more on the downside Vs the
upside of Poland ?

Not that you do that of course :)

Poland has its flaws, we just dont always want to hear them LEF. just like any
place else, the negative goes along with it, but its always better to hear
positive :)

Genealogy / Anyone Else 1/2 Polish??? [58]

I'm just looking to see if I can find other people who I can find that I have a lot in common with. (BTW, Im 1/2 Polish and 1/2 American, and Im 14 yr. old)

Polish_Chick. your American by citizenship, your heritage would be Polish and
whatever your fathers nationality is English? German? Irish? etc.

America is nation of Immigrants, so therefore you would be another nationality
unless your father was American Indian , cherokee? etc.

Polonia / Germans: Do Poles like them or dislike them? [217]

they knew what was his politic view and they voted YES WE WANT YOU.

not my grandmother in law, she hated him and so did her whole family, they knew
he was trouble BIG trouble!!

not all of the germans knew what was going on and he did hide alot from them
so I dont blame the whole german population for it. <~theres polish who follow
nazism ( I dont understand why they are idiots too) but I wont generalize
because I know there are people who didnt want any part of it and was sickened
by what happened. (they didnt say this because it was politically correct answer
either) .

sorry ranj, that was supposed to be for babylon :) post went all postal on me :) lol

Genealogy / Poland- Stories from the Ancestors Homeland [20]

guess that's all I did in Poland is go shopping.....started early....

krysia, I am sure your family has stories too. Old Country stories.

:)

my Grandmother told my uncle that they were Wealthy, by having many cattle
in Poland this was considered rich I guess. (I am not sure) I am sure someone
could add to that :) but he would ask my grandmother to tell him stories about
Poland, so she would comb his hair while telling these stories and he would sit
and listen . I asked him what she told him, he said, you know I only remember
some of it, cause I was enjoying the hair combing!!

Poland can become rich, and still hold the culture. we need more trust with
importing/exporting .

There is Polish Market that just opened in our city, it was in another city and
they moved to their own building. Their business is picking up, more people
are coming from other cities to this market, plus they make home-made food
already prepared and have a small sitting area where you can eat.

we went to get some hot food, and most of it was gone, Polish food is very popular
in the states. and never ever had I heard bad comments on its cusine, more like
who do you know that can cook it. or where can I find it!

Love / Do you think that Poles are faithful [74]

Simple when people cheat they put themselves before their partners. In true love your partner should always come first.

you are so right.

the other thing our friends those people around us know that if one of us did cheat there would be bloodshed. So they don't even try it on.

I think in every relationship, Gf/BF or wife and hubby, people will go nuts, its
like ripping your heart out and putting it back in, so this is common behavior
to feel this type of anger. And if your are friends with someone, the line should
be drawn as to how far friends are able to get comfortable. because some do
try to get to cozy.

One of my friends did it to me, but sweet sweet karma came back around and
bit her in arse! that was long time ago, we dont/havent talked in long long time
I dont want to talk to her. friends dont do friends like that. there is a Code of
honor among guyz and gals we should uphold.

USA, Canada / They give out paczki in Chicago Polish stores [14]

no I didnt, but I was laughing at that, lol, because sugar is a hot item in all
workplaces , lol you almost have to rent a pittbull to watch your cakes , especially
where I work, theres few men to the majority of women , and when chocolate
arrives, its like the radar turns on and people come running!! lol

Only today I was given two doughnuts by the boss

lol Wroclaw, doughnuts?

where I work anything containing sugar and smells delicously yummy you should
have under lock and key!! to leave and come back, its like saying have it!

people do take when they shouldnt, but I would hardly qualify that as a polish
stealing issue. more like someone was extremely hungry and forgot to eat
breakfast, and hey they still left you one :) lol

Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]

my mum has done all that for both sides of our family

I started both grandparents on moms side, then started my dads father, when I
realized, my dads mother side has so much to get, it became overwhelming.

I have three trees half way thru, and one which is a major project, she (grandmother)
had alot of family come to the states around the same time. all Polish, and all
aound the northern area in the states. lots to do.

I think its amazing, to actually find a record of your 4th great grandfather who
was in military , unfortunately, no one thought of diarys in my family :(

my dad never knew half the information I know now. but I think he would have
been amazed to see all the military men on his side. :)

ok, not many responses to this thread, i thought you all would blow this thread out
of the water with knowledge .

there are some i know who have traced, or know family history, but if you think
about, if it werent for them, we wouldnt be us :)

Her name was Mildred Swetkuse (

Mildred ? What would her name be in Polish folks?

anyone know?

I am researching my dads side and working out whom Zigmunt Tarasiewicz is and what connection he has to my father?? My father passed away 7 years ago and never spoke about his family at all.

Yes, same here, it was all foot work. we have a library in Detroit which i go to and
they have some really interesting information, cencus, immigration, old church
ledgers of baptisms, marriages, deaths. so I was able to locate records that our
family more then likely had, but might have been lost during moves, and fires , floods
etc.

it is hard , but its like a long history assignment you can never get a grade on :)

Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]

I am curious to see how many Polish and non Polish know their own family
histories and have actual family documentation ?

I was told many Polish dont know their history, this I find hard to believe because
so much tradition/culture is carried down generations, so i would think many have
such knowledge .

please everyone feel free to respond, this isnt limited to just Polish, it would be
interesting to hear all comments actually :)

Men Cheat for sexual reasons and women emotional.

but either way, not acceptable. risk of disease , emotional distress.

I agree with amathyst, the door couldnt swing hard enough to make him
fly out to the curb!

as my saying goes "go to your room" "SMACK" !

it would be modified to get the hell out of my life "BAM"!

UK, Ireland / polish girls outnumbers polish men interms of relationships with native from uk or ie [178]

I know, but its just not nice to think that people have that oppinion, Im not that way and maybe thats why I find it so hurtful.

A......... Be yourself, who gives a crap what anyone thinks? I dont!!

if I go out, someone looks at me wrong, I snubb them and have my good time
when I am able to go. it has always been like that. I am not out to impress
anyone, no one else should be either.

And those guys who brag, well, we all know how many times they have had it
because most of the time, the ones who brag are the least experienced!

its all in how you are. dont stop having fun or being you, the way you are just
because people think one way or another.

I can safely say, theres a good majority of men and women who go out to just
have fun with no intentions and stress relief their minds after a long day working
and rightly deserve it (be careful though) and if they meet someone who they can
relate to , fine, if not , who cares . you had fun, you enjoyed your night, and you
(hopefully) arent hungover (hate that feeling).

no matter where you go on this earth, theres always going to be people
saying something bad, always one in the crowd . or maybe a whole crowd.

but these people dont know you, and if someone approaches and says hey baby
I been watching you and I want you. Politely say, wow Ive been watching you too
I really dig the shirt, didnt you wear this last night?

Ive got some really "omg looks" with that one :) lol

gets rid of the unwanted approaches.

Life / Black people in Poland [357]

but what about if your faith... or rather those who tell you what your faith is... motivates you to go and kill in its name...

good point, and one should think more rational. <~these people are plain nuts!

its obvious that some are easily swayed.

someone tells me I need your bank account number in the name of god

Im going to tell him to go to h*ll!!!!!

born and bred on a turnip farm in iowa...

Bubba, did you make that piece out of turnip greens? lol
