Study / Comparing Educational Standards in Poland vs other countries [88]

I don't think many people would want to go to Poland for a Degree

That actually has more to do with the prestige of western countries (= prestige of western universities) rather then with educational level displayed by them, or by their eastern equivalents.

I agree with Matyjasz.

There is also the language problem when choosing a university in a non-English speaking country.

Life / Polish Girl Fashion - "less is more"? [108]

Was in Milan for a year once. It didn't work until palms were greased.... Frustrating place I agree. Almost lost a lot of money on a dodgy deal out there...

do not mention"middle age" in Szarlotka's presence anymore

NOOO! I'm cool with my life. Its jusst that I am really a fashion victim. I can make a Hugo Boss suit look like it came form a charity shop:)

That's why I hate the Italians cos they look smart in anything:)

UK, Ireland / Great Britain - which countries does it include? [95]

Fear not, within a few years the Union will be no more and there will be four separate countries again, oh and probably the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands. I hear Cornwall might want independence too.

Love / Hot Polish guys photos [73]

Look on the positive side of it you might get to see two hot chicks kissing in a club

Is this by any chance Giles' famous Lost club? I think we should be told

Dammit, I've been rumbled

What I meant to say was that this would be invaluable research for my Doctoral thesis on the impact of overt homosexuality on the psycho-subliminal pysche of the British working man. I live in a village that is so small that we don't have a single gay, not even a fat welsh one called Dafyd so opportunities for research are very limied.

No problem with that whatsoever. General point is that we are on a thread which has naff all to do with the current content. In fact we are on the thread of a good contributor to theis Forum who has left once already because of thread hijacking and some of the content on the Forum.

Oops - sorry this is the right thread. I'm talking C**p.

Work / Cost of Living and average Pay scale of IT in Warsaw [14]

Anyone able to help me establish the cost of living in Warsaw compared to the UK?

In the most recent survey of the 50 most visited capitals around the world that I have seen, London was the third most expensive and Warsaw came in at number 28. Warsaw is easily the most expensive city to live in Poland. If you want detailed info on the costs of living in warsaw, just google expats & warsaw, There is loads of info out there. If you are receiving a UK salary then Warsaw will seem relatively cheap. If you plan to work and be paid in Warsaw then you will find it difficult.

Travel / Hotel in krakow for a romantic weekend? [7]

Hi Sapphire,

Depends what you mean by expensive. Weekend rates for 2 at the Radisson SAS or Qubus hotels used to be around £80-90 a day, usuallly including brekkie. They were the hotels I used but they are 4/5 star so might be a bit big and impersonal.

BTW I always use hotelspoland.com cos the rates are usually very competitive. Worthwhile checking them if soemone local can give you more of a steer on hotels.

Life / Poland: The Things That Make Foreigners Lift a Brow [123]

There were quite a number of things that I found different when I was in Poland. I found the customer service to be very, very good when it was good and very, very bad when it was bad. I found queuing to pay utility bills a royal pain in the a**e but I know that is changing quickly now. I loved the hand kissing bit. It is so old world and romantic. Being older I could get away with it more which meant I got to kiss loads of hands whereas my younger colleagues couldn’t quite carry it off. I found the friendliness to be almost overpowering at first. Having to stop and talk with comparative strangers when you were in a rush was quite off putting. It could almost be seen as an invasion of your personal space at times. I loved the attitude to life that I saw. It was great to be in bars and talk to all sorts of people of all age groups about all sorts of subjects. The formality of conversation before the friendship came was strange. I lost count of the times when I was initially met with a polite but unsmiling response. We smile to be polite, Poles seem to smile when they are amused. Pushing and shoving in queues was a bit extreme sometimes (but no where near as bad as the legendary Paris equivalent). Finding people’s apartments was sometimes a challenge as the numbering was a little strange in parts of Warsaw. Some of the business practices were radically different. I particularly liked the time I offered to take the Marketing Director of my client out for a meal one evening and he kindly invited the whole of his department and their partners out too. Don’t suppose this was the behavioural norm – he probably just recognised a soft touch. There’s loads more things I could say but this post is long enough now.

USA, Canada / Polish Canadians [117]

The famous TH - wasn't that invented as a coping device for English people having problems with pronuncing the Irish accent?

I think it was designed so that the Brits could dribble when making polite conversation when having soup at dinner parties:)

The Irish often pronounce thr as tr - ie thread becomes tread, three becomes tree.:)
