Real Estate / I am English, 40, want to sell my home and move to Poland [17]

Hiya Hotrocks,

Hope you have had a Happy Christmas .......

It would be of great benefit if you started learning some Polish, or the language of the country you eventually decide to settle in. What are your main reasons for wanting to leave England, and why Poland in particular ?

I'm also from London, but of Polish background, so I have this pull towards Poland - I love everything Polish which is why I am moving my family to Poland in the next year or two :o)

Which part of London are you from ?

Any questions about Poland, feel free to PM me

I wouldn't be at all surprised when Rex... or Zeze ... or whatever other nicknames he posts under , moves to the uk, he will no doubt find everything wrong there also.

Life / Help with calculating expat population in Poland [8]

Whereas the exact number of foreign workers is very difficult to confirm, it is believed that almost half a million of them is working currently in Poland.

this is an excerpt taken from another website :

Grzegorz, is this where you got your figures from ?

Real Estate / What kind of property would you buy in Poland? [19]

I dont think its poor advertising,

trust me on this one Wroclaw Boy ..... the advertising was non-existant for the foreign investors ie. Brits , whilst the advertising for Poles could have been a lot better.

Life / No snow for Xmas 2008 in Poland [49]

So you reckon all the Polish in England will be forgetting their Polish traditions, after all, when in Rome

Absolutely not ...... but the beauty about a Polish Christmas is that it is celebrated on Christmas Eve, which allows everyone to partake of the traditional English turkey dinner on Christmas Day .... so in anglopolish families everybody can be kept happy :o)))

We have always tried to maintain Polish traditions living in England, but we also keep the English traditions alive and well :o)))

Life / No snow for Xmas 2008 in Poland [49]

just found out that they dont eat turkey at xmas here in this country !!!!!

no snow no tukey !!! is not x mas !@!!#%%!

my God, if there was an award for the greatest moaner/complainer on these forums , then you'd get the Gold medal ! :o)

why not do the traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner ....... apart from fish, there will also be barszcz with dumplings , pierogi stuffed with potato and cheese or cabbage and mushrooms amongst other dishes, so you don't have to eat fish if you don't like it :o)

there's nothing to stop you having a traditional English Christmas Day ..... surely you can find some turkey, goose or other meat substitute for your Xmas dinner on 25th !

there's a good saying .... 'when in Rome, do as the Romans'; whilst you are in Poland, try and take part in the Polish traditions ....... isn't that part of living in a different country .... experiencing the culture and traditions ?

I am thinking about calling her after the holidays, and just telling her that I'm sorry we couldn't meet up, and that maybe we can in the future, etc.

sounds like a good idea .......

I guess its kinda a crush; which is pretty bad at my age.

crushes can hit at any age .... is there a huge difference between your ages ?

If it does not snow in Warsaw, you could always get off your backside and experience another part of Poland, one where there is a higher possibility of snow :o)

UK, Ireland / We welcome Polish people to Britain! [224]

Go to Bradford in England and you will see that many Asians are extending their sheds into apartments in their back gardens

same is happening in Slough, and no doubt many other places !

ukpolska, in your last post it appears that I (Polanglik) have made the quote about Poles being the most racist people in europe .... when in fact it was lennyd who made this comment.

UK, Ireland / We welcome Polish people to Britain! [224]

many people refer to poles as pollocks like british get brits

I have always thought the term was 'Polak(s)', and I don't believe this is a racist or derogatory label.

i'm telling you polish are the most racist people in europe they come here and wouldn't work for blacks or rent from asians

where is your evidence to support such a statement ? ...... and I know plenty of Poles who are working for/renting from blacks or asians. If you have a look around London, there are many grocers which are jointly owned by asians and Poles.

claimed every time they got the ball there was racist chants from very large numbers of the polish crowd making monkey noises

it doesn't happen here so i think poles are extremely racist towards non whites , most of them hate the british yet have the cheek to come here

have you been to a football match in England recently .... these chants still go on, although less now than say 10 years ago; when England play away in other countries they will also get this sort of abuse .... admittedly more from some countries than others.

i wonder if you really know any Poles to make such a statement that most of them hate the british ...

i'm not saying no immigration whatsoever but you don't open your borders up that's just insane , points systems visas and our own native citizens should be given priority over employment rights

i have to agree with this up to a point; there should be a minimum threshold criteria which determines who can work in this country - knowledge of the English language etc.. , but once in the country then each applicant should have equal opportunity in getting the job ..... the better qualified/suited should get the job.

However you can't blame the Poles, or any other group of immigrants for the poor state in which this country is in at present..... the Labour government is the one to blame.

Start by kicking out Gordon Brown and his cronies, who after all don't seem to have England's best interests at heart ... maybe Scotland's , but not Englands !

I sometimes get the feeling that Labour is trying to instill a communist regime in this country .... Brits are not happy with this government and if we had an election today I would bet on a Conservative win.

Food / Christmas Dinner in Poland [33]

We have the meal on the 26th because the family here insist on having a Polish 24th and 25th.

what is a Polish 25th ?

24th is the main Christmas meal ..... but what is a traditionally Polish 25th .... apart from recovering after the 24th !!

we usually have the traditional English Christams dinner on 25th ... turkey with all the trimmings :o)

Life / Brits moving to live in Poland [88]

Rex .... you really do have a problem don't you ....

the guy comes out to Poland to be with his girl, takes the job of busdriver so that he can put food on the table , which is very admirable in my opinion, and all you can do is slate the guy off for the low level of pay he is getting !

I am enjoying my life in the mountains, and i do think I will stay

being able to enjoy life is not necessarily connected to the level of money one makes .... take a look at yourself ... from your posts we can see that you are not enjoying life in Poland ... you always seem to be complaining about one thing or another connected with Poland - why do you bother to stay in a place you so clearly cannot stand ?

Good evening Hairball ....

Glad you are enjoying Poland ..... and welcome to the Polish Forums :o) You'll find a mixed bunch here, and I'd take some of their opinions and comments with a pinch of salt ... if you know what I mean.

I wouldn't take too much notice of what Rex (he also posts as Zeze) says as he is very negative towards most things Polish, and can get quite abusive also.

Not everything that the newspapers have quoted me as saying are 100% true

Newspapers can stretch the truth to make a story more eyecatching ....

Life / The Guardian : Living in Poland [30]

life in poland will be good for 1 out of the 10 person that is it

that sounds like a very definitive statement ...... could you let me have the research which backs up this statement ?

how do you determine/define the term 'good' in the statement 'life in Poland will be good' ? What criteria are used to determine 'good life' ?

Life / The Guardian : Living in Poland [30]

Like anywhere else, life iswhat you make it.

very true ..... Poland will not be everyone's cup of tea :o) ..... but there are many who will come to Poland with the intention of staying only for a few years and decide to stay for the longterm ... for whatever their reasons, be it falling in love with one of the natives, or Poland itself, or because they've started businesses or they see a better quality of life in Poland than they would have if they returned to their homeland.

for those who keep complaining about their life in Poland, there is one simple answer ...... leave :o)

this is what many Brits have done ... they have decided they would have a better life elsewhere .... and moved !

UK, Ireland / Locations of Polish food and drink places in London [12]

Hi,

I would also recommend the shops close to POSK in Hammersmith, namely Polanka (258 King Street) and Polish Specialities (226 King Street, W6). These, and a Polish shop in Chiswick are the closest ones to me. Polish Specialities is probably the more popular shop.

Check out the website polishshops.com; this site gives you the addresses of a number of Polish shops along with telephone numbers.

I think your best bet would be Ealing, Hammersmith, Acton, Fulham, Shepherds Bush.

My mum, she's 77yrs old now but will be preparing the Christmas Eve meal along with my wife; she usually gets the fish from an English fishmonger in Turnham Green - carp & pike. It's best to pre-order these.

Life / The Guardian : Living in Poland [30]

plus is funny like the article put first is one million them you read on and say two million what is not the same

Zeze, you have a serious problem with comprehending simple text ..... Helen Pidd writes that

'up to a million Poles have come to Britain since their country joined the EU',

and then further in the article she writes

'plugging the gap left by the estimated two million Poles who have abandoned Poland since it joined the European Union in 2004 - up to a million of them to the UK'

....... this means the other million went elsewhere, like US, Germany, Italy etc.. She does not say that two million Poles came to the UK !

Just because you have a negative outlook on Poland, why can't you accept another person's perspective and that they can

'fall in love with Poland'

..... if you had read the article thoroughly .... and actually understood what it said, you would have read the bit where it says

'food is one of the things Blunt loves about his new homeland'

There have been many articles in the English press recently about Brits moving to Poland - many who have come with very little, and are earning what the locals earn - like the bus driver who moved from Newcastle to Zywiec, because he fell in love with the place.

I live here do you ???

For the last couple of years I have been spending between 1-2 weeks every month in Poland ....sometimes longer. I have been going to Poland since I was a child and my wife is a native Pole; so I have a good understanding what life and culture is like in Poland, both through my own experiences and from what my wife tells me about Poland.

How long have you lived in Poland ?

I see from your profile where it asks whether you speak Polish that you answer ‘Hell No’ – are you so up yourself that you can’t even make an effort to learn the language of the country in which you are living?

Your response ‘Hell No’ implies that you can’t be bothered … or you are a lazy so and so ……. or maybe you’re not capable of learning a new language :o)

Life / The Guardian : Living in Poland [30]

does not say the girls age but I bet she not even 30

plus

You lose the bet ......try reading the article .... it clearly says his wife is 33yrs old .... and is expecting twins ...

I'd like to know what makes you such an expert, such an authority on everything concerned with Poland, and life in Poland ?

it seems that Polish girls are the reason why this later 40`s married with early 20`s come

can you blame them ? but this is not the only reason ...... like i have written on other posts and it has been supported by many articles in the newspapers and by other people on this forum .... they come for a better standard of living, a slower pace of life .... and an opportunity to start businesses and make some money.

It is not only single guys looking for the beautiful women who come to Poland ... there are many single young women (some with kids), and I have seen many British families moving to Poland ....... some had only intended to stay for a few years, but after falling in love with Poland decided to make it their new home :o)

The Guardian is not the same paper use to be

how long have you been reading the Guardian newspaper to make such a comment ...?

this is bolocks

we all have our opinions, and the right to disagree, but try refraining from using terms like 'bollocks' ....... it just reaffirms what an uncultured yob you are !

normaly in real estate that is it Poland is where Brits with no money come to the ones with money go to france

I'd agree that more Brits are moving to France than Poland, but to say that Brits with no money come to Poland is not true ..... I know of many who after selling up in UK move to Poland with well over £1million ...... is this considered 'no money' ?

that is the reality

unfortunately your 'reality' Zeze is a far cry from the normal person's reality !

UK, Ireland / We welcome Polish people to Britain! [224]

now poles have destroyed our workforce

a bit of an exaggeration don't you think ?

like some posters have already said .... Poles are prepared to do certain jobs that Brits would not ...

even the primeminister has said british jobs for british workers and british should have a living wage

..... and you actually believed him ....:o))

there are more brits on benefits now than ever before

...and you blame the Poles for this ?

at least i know i'm what the majority are thinking

i don't believe the majority of Brits have your views ..... the average Brit has a bit more intelligence than that .... I hope :o)

Life / Living in Poland without working? - Your opinion [63]

I prefer to invest my money in some warmer country where I can make some serious bucks dealing with thousands of tourist. For example Spain

think back a few decades - many people invested in Spain and are now really sitting pretty; same will happen with Poland..... there will be some people who will make money quickly, whilst others will have to wait a little longer.

with regards the climate .... agreed ..... Poland cannot really compete, although the winters can provide very good snow conditions, and the summers can be really hot; i also enjoy the fact that Poland experiences the 4 seasons.

Spain has had a good head start in developing their tourist market, whereas Poland's is in it's infancy :o)

I'm not trying to criticize Poland or Poles

No offence was taken ... by myself anyway :o)
I consider myself a Pole, although I was born in UK ( I have Polish parents), and sometime I do see negative aspects of Poles or Poland ..... no country is perfect !

I wish you luck with your investment/business in Spain .... I hope you make your fortune.

If all goes to plan, then I'll be off to Poland within 2 years :o)

Language is tough, roads/drivers are crap, architecture quite depressing

Learning Polish is very difficult .... many of my English friends have said this ,

the roads leave a lot to be desired but given time they will improve and there do seem to be a lot of lunatic drivers on Polish roads, especially when it comes to speeding and overtaking !

i've never thought of the architecture as being depressing , however in recent years I have been restricted to visiting Krakow, Wroclaw, Warszawa - haven't been to Bydgoszcz for about 30 years !

Life / Living in Poland without working? - Your opinion [63]

but after 4 yrs in Poland I wouldn't recommend to invest any money over here

so you wouldn't recommend investing in property then ? Even with the slowdown in property appreciation in the major cities, there are still places where one can make decent gains; having said that the Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw property markets will experience property price surges in a few years time.

Poland is still a country undergoing major transition from what used to be a communist run country - there are opportunities to make money , especially if one knows where to look :o)

Poland is a pretty expensive country to live

for the majority of older generation Poles who have lived there all their lives, I admit it is getting quite expensive, although this does not mean they cannot live adequately. One doesn't have to shop in the expensive malls, there are still very reasonable markets which sell local produce for a fraction of the price.

for anyone thinking of moving from UK to Poland, especially if they know the language and the culture, they will see a considerable increase in their everyday standard of living.

Life / Living in Poland without working? - Your opinion [63]

hopefully the exchange rate will be a bit more favourable - at the moment it's hovering just below 5zł to £1.

have you decided where in Poland you'd purchase property ?

Life / Living in Poland without working? - Your opinion [63]

krakow just doesn't seem worth it with those figures

property prices are seeing a definite slowdown in the major cities like Warsaw and Krakow - I am already seeing developers giving incentives to make purchasing property more attractive.

i think that property prices will go up, and the next large increase , in my opinion, will be around 2012, when the euro is expected to be introduced and hopefully the Football European Championships will be held in Poland & Ukraine. There continues to be massive foreign investment into Poland, and especially the major cities.

the positive side of the slowdown in property appreciation is that the rental market has picked up considerably.

at the moment i think good places to invest would be in holiday locations, and also Katowice & Gorzow Wielkopolski.

Warsaw being the capital city will always be a rule unto itself ... a good place to invest in property - just take a look at London and most other capital cities in europe.

Yes, you can but the pay is lousy or so I have been told.

You can actually make quite a decent living out of teaching English privately as a native speaker - I believe this has been discussed on another thread.
