USA, Canada / Chicago as the city Poles chose to settle in America [44]

Poles go to Chicago because there are many jobs there where a person can get by without knowing the english language. The Polish will help out other Poles and being surrounded by the Polishness of Chicago, they don't feel so home-sick.

USA, Canada / Advice for Polish girlfriend getting tourist visa to visit America? [45]

Krysia, if I may ask - did you use a lawyer in obtaining the fiancee visa, or did you both fill out the paperwork yourselves?

I filled it out myself. No lawyer if you know what you're doing. He got approved for the visa after 2 months, then had an interview in the US Embassy 3 months later and got the visa without any problems.

And now, my husband since April has received a green card, or permament status in the US. It took him only 3 months to get it, while it normally takes almost two years if you marry someone on a tourist visa. But with the fiance visa, all the documents are already on file and that's why it takes so fast.

But starting today, the fiance visa price increases.

Travel / The Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland [14]

There is nothing like getting married 135 m (443 ft) below the surface.

Yeah, that is pretty cool down there. Have a big party, dancing on the salt.

History / Memories of the Polish communist era [115]

Yes growing up in the 70's in Poland I remeber my dad listening to those radio stations and it was always hush hush so the nieghbors won't hear it.

The lines started in late 70's, food became rationed, you were given tickets for certain amount of sugar, meat, rice, flour, etc. Most TV shows were about war. Russian was a rquirement in schools where you had to attend on Saturdays also.

May first was a parade. Fun stuff!!

USA, Canada / Getting my Polish fiance into the US [16]

She will receive an employment authorization card in 3 month and green card in about 1 year.

My Polish husband since April just received a letter from the INS that he will be receiving his green card in 2 weeks. The letter welcomes him to the US and the US goverment is announcing that he will have permanent residential status.

So if a person enters the US on a fiance visa, he will get the green card in 4 months. There is no need to talk to INS officials, the only time they need a talk is when a person enters the US on a visitor visa and doesn't return to Poland but marries a US citizen. The goverment frowns upon people who do that because they were not honest in their attempts to stay in the US and it takes about 2 years for them to get that green card, if they ever do.

News / Polish religious pilgrims crashed coming back from a pilgrimage [62]

Here is an obituary of a US citizen who died in Poland from my area. I don't know if I will find more information on how he died, but he was visiting Poland as a tourist. The worst part is when you die in another country and they can't find the immediate family.

"David A. Pupp, 58, Marshfield, died Thursday, July 19, 2007, in Krakow, Poland."

Travel / Warsaw Etuda airport? [10]

One comment stated that you should not check in any luggage

Nothing wrong with checking the luggage except you might wait a while before it gets unloaded from plane. If you think you can fit everything in your carry-on, being without shampoo, toothpaste or any other liquids then you're doing good, otherwise how you gonna bring any souvenirs from Poland if they don't fit in your carry-on? If you are flying straight from the US to Poland it would be impossible for them to lose your luggage, right? ;)
