Life / Thunderstorms in Poland [44]

I thought there was going to be a storm last night with the colour of the skies over Warsaw but no. Don't worry, those in Warsaw who are scared of storms, as long as I am here waiting eagerly to see these amazing storms you probably won't get any :)

I came back across this thread and now find it quite ironic :)

Travel / Where would be good for this long weekend in Poland? [12]

Badly worded post, I am in Warsaw not Krakow (was thinking I should see Krakow though, my dad went to Uni there just before WWII). Useful suggestions for that weekend!

Was thinking of Sopot, Wildrover, but assumed that will be busy too (I also get accused of bringing UK weather to Poland :) )

Love / THE TYPICAL POLISH WOMAN? [148]

Most Poles have been baptized in Catholic Church.

Same here. I got baptised as a baby but that's as far as it ever went.

Travel / Where would be good for this long weekend in Poland? [12]

Not much work next week. Considering taking a little break - Krakow I am assuming will be full of Brits, and Zakopane/Mazury etc plain full. Where else would be nice and also preferably inexpensive for a lone female traveller?

Life / IKEA in Warsaw [30]

Thanks Harry. I have one already but helpful for peeps who don't yet :)

for people who need the general website, and the page about the travelcard in general is

ztm.waw.pl/taryfa/wkm.php

I've just realised I have a direct bus to IKEA in Targówek, so those cheap tat coffee tables I want will be a reality by bedtime YAY

Assume a passport would suffice then? The French ID card would fall under Schengen rules, which the UK is not part of.

Love / CULTURAL DIFFERENCE/PROBLEMS IN MIXED POLISH-UK MARRIAGES [34]

P.S. Language is usually an issue for women, not men. What would you say?

I'd agree with that, from my own personal experience. Women tend to see not only what was said but what was not said, the silences and gaps. Then if there's nothing to set our minds at rest we leap to conclusions making you poor guys think "WTF?". That's bad enough in a shared language and culture, add linguistics into the mix and it gets far worse.

However, I'm the wrong woman to ask about this cos for me the more languages people can speak the better it is. :)

Love / CULTURAL DIFFERENCE/PROBLEMS IN MIXED POLISH-UK MARRIAGES [34]

This shite happens always to a guy who loves, who is respectful, thoughtful etc. The more you love a woman, the more you will lose a princess in her.

That can cut both ways, believe me! Lost count of the women I know who tear themselves apart over men who are way below them rather than be alone for a while.

Discriminatory to foreign residents without a PESEL? Maybe. Irritating? Yes.

No I didn't know that. Assume existing travelcards won't be affected and can just be recharged?

Life / Internet access in Lodz [18]

I realise this is in Warsaw not £odz, but I had no problem at ALL getting Aster City connection for internet, tv and even a CONTRACT sim card. I had to give a photocopy of my passport along with my rental agreement, sure, but the connection was on within a couple of days. Delayed not by the company, by my work schedule.

Love / CULTURAL DIFFERENCE/PROBLEMS IN MIXED POLISH-UK MARRIAGES [34]

My problem is that teh wife does not like me spaeking welsh to the child and if she hears him say anything in Welsh she goes mad. She seems to think it'll confuse him knowing 3 languages and she doesnt want him to be able to have private conversations with me and my mum.

Welshguy, please feel free to use me as an example. My mother CONSTANTLY apologises to me for being so blinkered and narrow minded with my father about Polish "what do you want to teach her that for it's no use to anybody".

Whereas if I could speak Polish I'd be able to set myself up with some very specialist skills to teach here in Poland as well as being a native speaker.

PLEASE speak to your child and keep a language which is unique alive!

Oh yes - a child can learn up to FIVE languages at once, naturally. Linguistic fact.

It makes me sad to see such discord though - I have to ask you, how long did you know her before you got married?

Polish parents ARE over protective. Living here is giving me insight though, my father trying to make sure I was "warm enough" all the time. It's the 1st June and it is FOGGY out there. FOGGY.

Just be assertive, explain why without threats and ultimatums (they are counterproductive if you are not committed to following them with definite action) and tell all concerned exactly why you are doing it. Then stick to your guns. If you do this long enough then all SHOULD be fine. If it is not then there's other issues you have to think about, again without threats.

Life / Bookshops that will exchange English books- Warsaw [13]

Are there any UK bookshops (as opposed to US) in Warsaw? I know of one in Plac Bankowy. Just thinking about a couple of great authors I discovered recently - ironically, one of them was by buying a book at Okęncie to read on the way back to the UK when I was going back to pack things up.

Life / Let Us Hear What Polish People Have To Say About Us (foreigners in Poland)! [15]

they both have extremely skewed understanding of what respect means. extremely!

I think that depends on whether you are encountering the sort of idiots who (sadly) end up here on drinking weekends if we're talking about people from the UK.

I, for example, hold the door open for people, etc. Then again I was brought up properly and my dad was Polish and very particular about manners. I never felt at home in the UK.

(Am I defending the country of my birth or not here? Not too sure myself!!!)

Love / My Polish boyfriend never says 'l love you' to me, what should i do? [93]

ok people. it doesnt matter what nationality we are, the bottom line is...love is the absence of anxiety...is this connection energizing or depleting, and nourishing to both parties? based on mutual power, exceptance and naturalness? a true loving relationship with any one is the absence of fear!!!! if your a mess, dump him. find some one who when your with him, you feel good, about him and most importantly feel good about your self. there are alot of fish out in the sea...place your self in other citys, situations, activities,etc....its a huge world if you just get out there.and as you wait for mr. right, focus on your self and self growth...list 5 things you have always wanted to do, even the ones you are scared to do...do then. my best and smile, valkyrie

Valkyrie, you couldn't have said it better.

OP = well there's more than a few people on here with the complex relationships which are going nowhere. It's simple really, if someone loves you and can't show it then do they love YOU or do they need something you willingly give them?

PolskaDoll said it too: if you don't contact him will he contact you? It might hurt finding it out but in the long run it hurts less than dragging things out if they are not good. If you are ANXIOUS all the time then it is not love, it's fear (of what depends on the person of course).

I do feel for you, been there and done that.

Hell if things don't work out ....... find me and i'll tell you i love you every day and will not be threatened by your intelligence or your financial success, be glad for you to be my sugar mama ;)
life is funny, i've been looking for a woman like you for so long and you're in Denmark damn my luck :)

Why is it that all these men looking for a good woman never find us but the arseholes find us so easily? :)

Life / Wonderful Poland.......but the attitude of Polish people [150]

I experiance this myself constantley as a white male with a yorkshire accent, the amount of people that have tried to start the whole " i f***ing wish these polish cu*ts would fu** off home conversation is now becoming beyond my count.

Oh and in Yorkshire too? No wonder then. The bastion of tolerance that is Yorkshire.

(Also Anglopolski. Also from Yorkshire originally, without the Ecky Thump accent at least :) )

Love / In your opinion, are most Polish women 'Easy'? [243]

So does the same apply to Polish guys?

(Actually I do know lots of Polish girls who have foreign boyfriends but no Polish guys dating "out" as it were).

Life / What are your favourite Polish Radio stations...? [27]

Oh why oh why would Brits in Britain, Americans in America and Canadians in Canada want to listen to Polish radio, especially the ones who speak no or a little Polish. I live here and never listen to the radio cos its crap. It is extremely repeptitive and has no comedy such as chris Moyles etc.

Well you said it. There's no Chris Moyles for a start.

In Poland, to immerse oneself in the culture you've chosen to live in maybe? :)

I like Radio Kampus but feel slightly wrong listening to it since it's not aimed at my age range LOL.

Is Digital Radio coming to Poland? I brought a radio with me (cos it was there really) not knowing if I could get digital reception. I can get FM on it, but it was crappy in the UK with the digital reception so might be the radio itself?
