Travel / Is Wroclaw the best city in Poland? [30]

So u r gonna jump on the bandwagon and say Kraków? An overrated city in terms of aesthetic appeal. I think Prague is nicer than Wrocław. Never been to Birmingham but have heard about it, not so positive things.

News / When the currency of Poland to change into Euro? [14]

Strange to think that it was 7.2PLN to the pound at the tail end of 2005, even in 2006 perhaps. I'm waiting for the 1 to 1 ratio. 5000 pounds a month, nice. Send half the paycheque home, hehehe. I'm being stupid now

How polluted r ur lungs now? Upper Silesia, being industrial, isn't exactly what u'd call pretty. Gliwice would appear to be the nicest of the lot. There are some attractive neighbourhoods here.

Food / Brussel Sprouts - Polish Style [13]

Versatile little things these mini-chou. Parmesan, now there's a good idea. Melted cheese, can't beat it. In Britain, it can form part of a Sunday meal Osioł. Roast beef, potatoes and mixed veg, with brussels sprouts thrown in there. Don't forget the Colmans.

News / When the currency of Poland to change into Euro? [14]

I'd hazard a guess at 2010, the złoty is doing very nicely against the pound at the moment. Rafik's date is probably more realistic according to the reports of specialist branches

Work / For all English teachers in Poland (who work for only $1000 a month) [102]

I have to disagree Michał, the wide scope of the job allows u to branch out and u have a fair bit of leeway. Having to be very precise as some kind of specialist is more taxing on the soul. I agree with u in that, occasionally, the regularity aspect isn't there as students cancel (private schools) but u r usually able to make up your quorum by the end of the month. At the risk of sounding conceited, I often got thanked for my teaching abilities. For me, I just put my head down and get on with it but students like what I do. It's all laid out for me pretty much so how can I take pride in that?

Life / Poles working abroad - do they integrate well? [4]

There could be many explanations. The main one would be short term-ism, they are not in the UK for the long haul. They maybe need to write off certain debts at home. Believe me, with the salaries many people earn here, it's understandable how the big brother (bank) could step in to bail them out. Living CONSTANTLY like this has to manifest itself in some way. Brits feel the pinch but not to the same level.

Another one could be the brooding nature of some Poles. Some people here just seem to be depressed and they want to work alone. In general, they are quite a communicative bunch, I'm a teacher so I see it first-hand.

Maybe also they are just delaying the inevitable, the day when they feel the need to re-establish ties with their families and live the way they want to. I miss my family so I can empathise with them.

Maybe the nature of their work is such that they don't need to be dynamic and open. Homogenous cultures like the Japanese I found to be much more closed.

News / The most useless things in Poland [140]

It's hard to answer this but Mr Marmite got a good one with the zebra crossings. They are hardly ideally located. The road planning dept here in Gliwice had a bad day when looking at the strategic placement aspect of them.

Food / Polish Ham - How to? [45]

Z plastrami is the idea. 7 slices would be the translation. To me, it's standard Polish. 1 plaster, 3 plastry and 6 plastrów. U've lived in Chicago too long.

Life / Redheads in Poland - How many? [95]

Red hair is popular amongst some older women. It's dyed and not natural most of the time. I'm true red and proud, never any dye involved.

Life / Teachers and teaching styles in Poland [6]

Put the onus u mean Ian, sorry, couldn't resist it. I like the CELTA and NOVA approach where the emphasis was on STT, not TTT. Callan was way too much TTT 4 my liking. My current schools are a bit of both. Talking and 'getting stuck in' is important but speaking is not 4 ur benefit, rather 4 theirs. I like giving pairwork activities and monitoring (thinking about tea/supper). I try not to analyse what I teach too much, I just get on with it.

History / Poland Betrayed in WW2 [243]

UK Polska posted a quote by Hegel, very apt here. Did we learn from Hitler's genocidal practices? I fear not. Look at the genocide against the Serbs, killing on a large scale for the fault of a few wacky politicians. That was genocide according to legal classification (Genocide Convention 1948) but politics reared its ugly head and botched everything up. As for the Poles being betrayed, well, I disagree with Hairball. America had a moral obligation to step in but was not bound to do so. I don't think they betrayed anyone as they signed no treaties to intervene in the event of war. The America of now would step in for sure but, then, the agenda was different. Why not Australian intervention or Chinese?

Life / Is drinking water in Poland good? [96]

The general quality is decent but u have to let it run for a bit first. Sometimes, u get brown stuff gushing out and u have to let it pass. Nothing beats the soft water of Inverness though

Law / Making proper sausages (ex-pat expers in Poland)? [32]

Cheesecake with no cheese in it, that's a great point. U should try a Polish cheeseburger mate, no cheese in it unless u order double cheese when u get one slice. Even then, can't taste it for the cabbage. As for toad in the hole, be as well call it 'tatties a la turtlehead'. Here, I'm being the shepherd and showing the way, LOL

Theoretically, the President is the leader but practice points otherwise. Donald and Daffy both try and run the show

Love / More beautiful Polish women: in Warsaw or Krakow? [37]

I agree with Foreigner4, who cares who has the more beautiful women? Let them get up their own vain as*** and fight it out. Very beautiful women sometimes, but, NOT no1 in the world. It's a matter of taste. Personality is much more important for me.

Life / Age of students of High School in Poland [7]

They have a different system. In Scotland, we start primary school (elementary) school at 4 and finish at 11. Then, 11-17 in secondary school (high school). U can finish at 15 if u wish. Poland, well, they have gimnazjum and liceum. Gimnazjum is from 12/13 to 15/16, depending on ur DOB. Liceum is from 16-19. U can also do technikum or zawodowa. Poland doesn't have high school exactly as we know it. It's more normal to finish in ur teenage but some finish at 20. Średnia szkoła (high school) is either liceum or technikum for Polish students. Some say zawodowa (vocational school) is high school but it doesn't give u Matura, needed for Uni

Food / Polish Ham - How to? [45]

JJ, I didn't know they measured ham by length, they actually measure it by decagrams here, I was taken aback. The old gestures were whipped out, must've looked a bit stupid. I just get it by the slice, 7 plastrów prosze seems to do the trick

UK, Ireland / 90,000 Scottish Immigrants in Poland! [67]

It paints Scots as tax evaders, hehehe. There's a difference between being shrewd and being a criminal tho. Poles, b4 May 2004, flocked to Banff and Macduff in Scotland. My grandmother remembers hearing of their exploits way 50/60 years ago. Nothing is missed in small coastal towns, hehehe
