The Japanese call bass 'suzuki' and I had it as sushi. I'm glad that they didn't have carp there :) :)

News / JEW YOUTH SHOULD CLEAN UP THEIR ACT IN POLAND [420]

Artists were rich then, M-G? Hardly! Yes, they contributed for sure but it's:

1) A question of the extent to which they contributed and

2) How those contributions are valued within the given society

Having talked with senior Poles, I can say that what emerged clearly was that Jews were viewed with mistrust. Not without foundation in their eyes.

PP is right so long as there is access to crude oil. 2020 more or less? Nah, 2035 was the conservative forecast but I think that, failing any Hussein-type mass dumping, 2050 is a more realistic date.

I hate the ponces dealing with Iran too. I thought breakthroughs were supposed to be getting better through time. When Iran offered to release some uranium to France and Russia, it was treated like a miracle when it must have seemed obvious to anyone with a bit of savvy.

I'm just sayin, Scrappy, think long and hard before you go down that road. Aaron Russo was right in his film, 'From Freedom to Fascism'.

Shawny, Homeland Security? Ok, what if he then says that he poses no threat to the country and that he is there to study?

Blabber on? It is America that is synonymous with flaunting its much vaunted freedoms, Scrappy, not Europe, although we have many excellent documents such as the ECHR.

Timotei, I agree on the war point. To pull out would be an admission of defeat but I ask you, 'what is the mission statement there?'. They'd need to coin it beautifully so that it wouldn't give the appearance that they were bailing out with their tails between their legs. How can that be done?

Geez, PP, stop making out like I'm a defender of Britain just because I'm Scottish. I also hate what the Balfour Declaration represents and am well aware of how we screwed up over there. Tony Benn wouldn't have allowed that, Blair very much did.

Timotei, raising families isn't the issue. Occupying is.

Scrappy, glad to hear it. I have a similar take on Obama as you do. He is idiotic for waging this protracted war. What is the rationale for all this in your eyes? MANY Americans have lost their lives lately.

PP, there are no Christian fanatics who pounce on abortion seekers or gay rights activists? I take your point that radical muslims are more vicious and that we shouldn't extend our hand out to them. Still, it's a question of balance and taking a measured approach with normal muslims.

Well, you guys live there so I respect that. I'm moving in that direction too but cannot take that position outright as it is discrimination. PP, applying your own logic against you, why don't you just deal with those who commit the crimes, rather than targetting all of them? (visa logic of yours). You are preaching guilty before innocent and guilty by association. Are you proud of that? Is that what America is about?

PS I see your point but muslims would ask you to be consistent. If you can enter their countries, why can't they enter yours?

Whether we agree or disagree about Iraq is neither here nor there in the eyes of muslims. It's a done deal and FACT that there was an invasion. We must take it from there and see it from their position.

Imagine yourself as an immigration official sitting in front of a muslim, PP. He asks you why he is being refused entry. What do you tell him?

Well Timotei, by that logic, Americans should get out of Afghanistan and shouldn't have occupied Iraq. Why should they have a strategic advantage by being there?

I just don't like double standards.

Define contributed, Sokrates. They were poor merchants in Poland before the outbreak of WWII but it's all about opportunity. Look how they developed in terms of Nobel Prize winners and entrepreneurs after that.

Anyway, why do I never hear about stories of Jewish youth here? I'm not ignorant :)

It's just that 65% of Americans couldn't point to Iraq on a map. Educated Americans had a laugh at that :)

Why shouldn't muslims be given a chance in the land of opportunity? I've seen Islamic speakers, moderate ones, who have debunked the hopeless myths perpetuated by haters and the ill-informed. I'm not PC, I believe many have to be viewed with suspicion in today's modern climate. However, outright refusal?? Is this what you are saying??

PP, there is discrimination as other nations near Poland don't require a visa. We agree on that!

Scrappy, there are those who want the Mexicans 'onside'. They will get their hands dirty as you said but it's about set and setting (Leary, lol). Maybe many American Poles won't but Poles who went to the UK will. The job market was saturated with 'unsavoury' employment and they took up many of those posts. The pay for them is still much better than in costly Poland.

Oh, btw, how are American geography classes coming along? ;) ;)

Good point, OsioĊ‚. Another complicated one is blowfish (fugu). This requires even more precision to remove it of poisonous elements (tetrodotoxin). It's a tetraodontidae.

Sorry, Pol3, carp struck me as being coarse. The bones were like mini-swords and the texture was rough. Not like soft fish such as ling or coalies. Coalies are similar to the Pollack so I think you have to be careful about where you put your brackets ;) ;)

Tone it down a bit? Principle is principle but, then again, they don't apply it uniformally. Mexicans are conveniently allowed to slip through key spots as many are a valuable asset to the cheap labour market in the US. Chicago-based Poles tend to send their money home and that could be seen badly in the eyes of some.

PP, they have recourse to a thorough procedure here as I discussed it with one of my ex-students. I meant that it shouldn't be a whimsical intergovernmental ploy to waiver the visa requirement cheaply. That runs the risk of tit-for-tat, impractical politics. What I said was "I know that they shouldn't be punished for the folly of their countrymen". Yes, I know, you want me to comment on the "but that's life" part. Well, I don't make the decisions and that should say enough.

Check my comments on the other thread(s) on this. I made the same point as you did with regards to enforcement. So, I ask you, what are you disagreeing with exactly???

The problem is that Poles take offence but can't take responsibility for things like illegal entry. The American authorities are not idiotic in not waivering the visa requirement. Sometimes 'you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours' doesn't apply and this is one of those occasions.

Poles have a right to work abroad if they satisfy the relevant conditions. However, why should it be made easy for them when many are abusing the system? My Polish students agree with me on this point. I know that they shouldn't be punished for the folly of their countrymen but that's life.

Besides, America cannot be treated as a cash cow anymore. The funds aren't there to be usurped.

News / 14 year old rape victim from Warsaw denied abortion! [348]

The real truth is that many legislators from around the world have ruled it to be legal and we should try and at least hear them out to see where they are coming from. I reiterate, I am far from being a staunch advocate of abortion and, in fact, condemn slackness which causes the whole dilemma of 'to abort or not to abort' to be brought about.

My wife, God Bless her, put me to the test yesterday. She asked me to imagine I was a pro-lifer and that she'd introduce twists and turns so that I'd have to react accordingly. It took the form of a doctor's consultation. Wow, she threw in some real tricky posers which would have stumped most doctors. She played the part well, tempering emotional 'maternal' concerns with rational practicality and 'state of knowledge' issues. You need to be aware of how divisive the issue is. Medical opinion is very split on key aspects of it.

I'm a humanitarian guy who protests stances against the Palestinians and any other oppressed peoples. I would also like to see conceived babies emerge as well-nourished, healthy ones. However, we musn't let that blight our judgements.

Gunslinger, I want you to address these issues:

1) Do you really think that most women have malice aforethought when making the decision to abort?

2) Is it fair and natural to the kid to allow the situation to arise where they must ask their adopted parents who their real parents are? Is it fair to keep that as a secret from them? How would you like to hear that you were a bast*rd child not born out of wedlock and love (as God would have it) but out of a heinous crime such as rape? Depending on the sensitivity of the child, that could lead to infinite torment and a collapse of their identity. After all, the purpose of life is a life of purpose. I don't know about you but part of that purpose involves a rich family life with parents who wanted me and still want me. Their love and support is invaluable and priceless to me. What sentimental feelings has that child born of rape? Does quality of life have no meaning to you?

3) Also, check out suicide.org/rape-victims-prone-to-suicide.html. It says that 33% of rape victims are prone to suicide so that's a further danger in and of itself. Wouldn't you want to drop the burden by aborting? The kid will always serve as a harsh reminder by being carried around in her belly.

Let me address your point as to the kid being innocent. By all accounts, it is. Nobody could deny that. However, what legal status does that kid have? Another issue, foetal sentience. What awareness does it have of termination?

'Ann Furedi, director of the Birth Control Trust, is more concerned about the psychological impact that this kind of speculation could have on women: 89 per cent of aborted foetuses are less than 12 weeks old, only 1.2 per cent of abortions are carried out when the mother is above 20 weeks pregnant, usually because of foetal abnormality', taken from a brilliant article, timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?storyCode=102525&sectioncode=26

With reference to the paragraph above, 89% is a high number indeed. I surmise that the number of aborted foetuses for raped women would be even higher, between 95-100%. Consider that many women aren't aware that a stray sperm slipped out and don't take action immediately, instead preferring to leave it for over 3 months. We can accept 12 weeks as the critical juncture, right? Raped women with a feeling that the rapist may have ejaculated inside her would want restitution as soon as possible, wouldn't you say? There is an available option to remove the sperm but the woman has, I think, 72 hours in which to get it. On this point, I'm not sure on the timing but logic would tell her to seek it out ASAP. This is not like an AIDS test where you should wait around half a year to go and get tested.

By the way, what credentials do you have in medical circles? Me? None. I studied medical ethics with legal repercussions as part of my undergrad which raised my awareness but I'd be blown away by specialists. Isn't it odd that, in reference to the link 2 paras above, NOT ONE of the pro-life lobby had any meaningful medical expertise?? Doesn't inspire much confidence!

independent.co.uk/news/foetuses-can-feel-pain-at-six-weeks-1359581.html

Gunslinger, I prefer to get to the heart of the matter. Sth like a French judge in the inquisitorial procedure. I have no interest in 'being right' but to reach some consensus. I like The Independent as a paper but almost all press is guilty of overassertion. Just look at the heading. Attenion grabbing? Yes. Accurate? No. Some official sources say 13 weeks, others say into the 10th week. The compromise, da da, 12 weeks. NOT 6 weeks.

In conclusion (wreszcie), I have outlined just a few more ramifications and implications. I hope that you address them as, unlike you stated, I can entertain your opinions and contentions. Bear in mind that medical science does err and is spurred on by agenda serving and ethical concerns of sensitive disclosure.

We both have truths, are mine the same as yours? ;) ;) ;)

UK, Ireland / To Brits only trout are not coarse? [18]

It's not a question of perception amongst anglers, Pol3, it's a question of rules. My dad was an avid fisherman back in the day (20 years ago) and he picked up rainbow trout but also some other fish which he was allowed to keep. That all changed with the advent of new regulations. In came licensing in a big way which restricted his options. Also, he was confined to a certain weight limit in order not to deplete the stock of fish.

Please outline your take on the American position to see if a similar thing happened.

News / A THOUSAND PEOPLE WITH SWINE FLU....just over the Polish border.. [43]

Quite a few people here have contracted the flu but the standard version. The more virulent strains will be contained by Poland. Poland took a very responsible attitude towards the isolated case that it had and not much more was said about it.

However, all it takes is one slip. I remember the stringent measures taken by Japan back in 2003. One Chinaman got into the country and the Japanese authorities were furious. They imposed mandatory quarantines on people coming back from there so that's why I didn't go to Shanghai. My work wouldn't have seen the funny side of it.

Back to Poland, I feel safe here. I am susceptible to colds generally but have been in close contact with those that have them and have not contracted anything. We should always be careful of exaggerated hysteria!

I have a contact in Georgia and also one American friend who lives in Katowice who lived there.

The funniest accent I heard was when I trained a stunner called Natalia. She was from Tennessee if I remember right. An amazing drawl. When she said 'brawl', I couldn't stop laughing. It was like braaaaaaaaawl. There was another from Kentucky. Many American girls have heart and personality. Personality goes a long way.

Texas Redneck Games. Cool music from Adema, I have that CD somewhere.

For all those junk-in-the-trunk type girls, many American girls still have a special appeal due to their charisma. America defined cool for such a long time, largely through symbols and immense rock groups. I used to love such music as a teen.

ROTFL, I got his point :) :) I doubt my wife would like him though. But, you know, Alaska oooover kaaawfee, LOL

Another major plus of America, the diversity among the states. Poland has little or no diversity outside of Silesia and Kashubia.

I remember my American friend laughing at a fellow American from Wisconsin due to his accent. WiskAAAAnsin, LOL. Americans can laugh at themselves for the most part.

Some of the tv shows in America blow the ones here away. They have so many charismatic talk show hosts with their fingers on the pulse.

Also, compare Polish comedy with American comedy. There is no comparison. Americans are much funnier and are straight talkers. Give me anything near as funny as the Blue Collar Comedy Tour here. Nothing gets close IMHO.

Dave Chappelle was funny til he exited the limelight.
