UK, Ireland / Views of Poles in UK on Bulgarians/Romanians coming here? [62]

Thanks, nice map.

there is no need for it why post on here if things are gonna turn nasty

Probably, because after so many years of isolation in the Communist period, some people feel they need to try and 'flex their mussels' a little in the new free World. They simply lack the maturity that we in the West have. It is like alcohol, it just goes to these people's heads, we, on the other hand, are used to our environment for so many generations.

However, I doubt you will be able to do this unless you have all you Polish crential. ie.e NIP and Pesel.

I can not come to Poland then as I do not even know what these things are! Well, I imagine that NIP is a national insurance number or something, mind you, only at a guess!

when people post conversations like this it always ends up like people slagging people off then the name calling starts when at the end of the day there is no need for it why post on here if things are gonna turn nasty

I think it all starts from the following topic. Ja mam wielki dom i wielki ogrodek. Do not ask me what all this is about. Of course, my daughter, being born in England speaks fluent polish without the slightest hint of an accent and as for her Russian, well, when she goes out most people mistake her for one of Gorbachov's daughters!

Russian provokation

Not in the slightest! Szczecin is a German city and always was. Poland has no claim to this land. If Poland has a claim, why was Poland so quick off the mark to reiterate the official borders between the two countries?

t's smaller

A bit. Poland is 312,679 km squared and Romania has 238,391 km squared-still a large country. Obviously Poland has a much larger population but then again, Poland has stolen a lot of land in the West which belongs rightfully to Germany, so the argument of true size is open to question. It was interesting as soon as Germany gained 'independence' the Poles were very quick to start quibbling over future boundaries so obviously it is a sore point with the Poles and a continued thorn in their side!.

rendy Warsaw bar with two stunning Polish bimbos wrapped round him and laughing like a cretin while telling me his company was paying him 30% more than he got in London an

Tell them I am prepared to come and sit in Warsaw with these two fine Polish bimbos for thirty per cent less!

It has to be remembered that not all crime is reported in the first place. Also, I am a criminal myself, often driving a little over the official speed limit! It all depends on what and how you register crime figures. You certainly can not compare armed robbery to stealy a toothbrush in a Tesco store but figures as such, do not reflect these differences. In some instances these so called Poles, may be other former Eastern Europeans with 'bought' Polish passports and may not be true Polish people at all..

Language / His and her (plural) [30]

As I said to you, go to a good bookshop and buy a decent language course and everything is laid out for you in sequence. Otherwise, language learning is almost impossible.

Life / Thinking of moving to poland to be with my girlfriend [30]

am really thinking of moving to poland to be with my gf. i was wondering could anybody tell me who i would need to contact to find more information on it.

If you want to find out the legalities on moving to Poland and what documents you need, then I would have though that there should be a section within the Polish Embassy in the Republic of Ireland who would be able to answer all your questions. That is, after all, what they are being paid for.

o, UNBELIEVABLE!! o

Well, no it is believable. If you are a charted accountant working for a large international bank you will want a very good financial incentive to live in a place like Poland for very long.

not think I could ever get used to the life style over here if I did not have the type of money I am normaly earning.

This is something that people do forget. Visiting a country for a while is one thing, especially if you are on holiday with your family but living and working somewhere all the time, especially if the rest of your family is back in the U.K. is something else all together. I had the chance once of working in South Korea as a teacher but it would be on my own not with my family. How long do I want to be a foreigner in Korea for? I remember many years ago, visiting Poland and met a girl who had the chance of being married to a German pilot who even came to Poland and saw the place for himself. He said to her, "for me, life in Poland would be like a flower without sunshine". I always remember his remark and think that really it was a truthful and accurate statement of the drudgery of everyday life in Poland.

Can you not go to a fairly good book shop where you can actually open the pages and see how user friendly the book is for yourself before buying?

Language / His and her (plural) [30]

Have you got a good text book? If you have a proper course written by an expert with proper lessons you should be able to learn the language well over a period of time. It must be very confusing learning bits of grammar in different contexts and then trying to fit it all together with help over the internet. Even first generation Polish speakers on this forum do, often, make mistakes.

Language / His and her (plural) [30]

You want to be careful with plurals in Polish as it can be a bit of a mine field. Doktor has the plural doktorzy but inzynier, as the name suggests, an engineer, has the plural inzynierowie. We could just simplify the language and have inzynierzy for the plural too!

Language / Polish Gender in foreign word borrowings [26]

I know that -um endings are Latin and do not change in the singular such as museum. To museum and do tego museum but there is a plural musea.

What are the rules for Polish borrowings from other languages with regards to grammatical gender?

Why not invest in a really good language course and learn yourself all the rules as you go along? There are some really good books with accompanying cassettes on the market at the moment as you would have a well planned course of study all laid out for you as you go. You are never going to learn a language well from doing 'piece meal' work here and there. On this forum, twenty people will give you twenty totally different and differing bits of advice on the same topic.

Language / Duzy / wielki - synonyms? [44]

he man's little short of a genius in the area of linguistics!

I have never pretended to be an expert in linguistics and such knowledge has no place on this forum anyway.

This was not the impression I've got!

Again, duzy and wielki are similar words but you can not always use them interchangeably, not in my house at least! I certainly would never refer to my own car as wielki but then others might disagree, my car is always simply duzy.

This was not the impression I've got!

You tell me, you are in Poland and can not speak a word of the language not me. Your need is greater than mine!

Language / Duzy / wielki - synonyms? [44]

Ale duzy samochod!
- Duzy? Ten samochod jest wielki!

No, this sounds very strange indeed. To jest bardzo wieki statek, ten budynek jest wielki but ja jestem bardzo duzy bo jestem gruby, tu jest moj duzy talerz or tu jest moj wielki talerz but moj samochod jest bardzo duzy-not wielki. In polish you do not call a car wielki only a ship or a lorry perhaps. Wielki is used for people only if someone was a king a krol and you are talking about history Krol Michal Wielki or something similar. It is simply not correct to give the impression that duzy and wielki are interchangeable, which is the impression being given here.

I wouldn't put much weight on Michal's knowledge of linguistics in general, and on his Polish language skills in particular. Polish doesn't appear to be his first language.

Obviously not your first language either-wielki samochod?

Language / Counting of Polish currency [28]

zloty / grosz - singular masculine

To answer the question, zloty is an adjective and means gold in Polish and in grammar it behaves like any other Polish adjactive and grosz is a noun so one hundred zloties would be 100 zlotych using the genitive plural. As you rightly say, groszy is indeed, as far as I know, the genitive plural of grosz, which is a singular masculine noun.

, Bulgarian

The Bulgarian Language used to have genders just the same as Russian does to this day but the Bulgarian Language lost its gender endings during the Roman Empire, or at least, so I have been told.

1 zloty / grosz - singular masculine

To finish off what the original question was, yes, jeden zloty, dwa zlote, piec zlotych.

o do contribute something constructive. If you need to spew hatred towards Poles then

I have never spewed hatred towards the Poles on this forum or anywhere else for that matter. One of my own sons even held a Polish passport at one time. Therefore, how could I?

So do contribute something constructive. If you need to spew hatred towards Poles then perhaps you should really join "Pravda" forums. You will feel at home there, katsap.

Why should I join a Prawda forum? I am not one per cent Russian anyway. You talk about perception in language and how you were a three year old child sitting in the pram translating Russian novels in to Icelandic from Latin and then you can not even understand the difference between duzy and wielki. You talk about a wielki samochod yet you are full of perception about me and all of it is wrong anyway. I do not hate Polish people and my own wife is Polish. You do not even know me at all. End of story.

Travel / Have you ever been in Poland? [111]

I have nothing against Poland or its people and I have three wonderful children all born to a Polish wife. All three of my children have been baptized in the Polish Church. I simply believe that all countries and all languages belong to everybody and should be free. I simply resent Poles who escape to English speaking countries and then snipe from the sidelines in Canada, Florida, and of course, a local area of Poland-Australia no less being just down the road from Warszawa!. Then, these same people come on this forum and are rude, sarcastic and God knows what else. It is these Poles who are trying to be exclusionary and racist and not me. I have every right to appear on this Forum and members of my family fought for Polish soil in World War 2 just like many millions of others. Because we live in England does not mean that we have nothing to contribute and these poles do not have monopoly rights, though I would think so from what they sometimes write! End of story.

I never particularly liked Warsaw actually :) Born and raised in Galicia, now living in Ontario for the last ~15 years.

In that case, you have been in Poland not very long ago compared to me then. Fifteen years you say, yet you too do not want to live in Poland. Interesting, fifteen years in Canada and the Poles have never have a single good word to say about the British or their culture and then you want to be an expert of Polish Language and culture-we say in Polish, nie mozna miec dwoch rzeczy naraz, in English, you want your cake and eat it as we say in England. If you want to be the expert then prosze bardzo wroc sobie do cholernej Polski i tam siedz! Od pietnastu lat jestes w Kanadzie bardzo blisko do granicy z Polska! Sprytny jestes!

UK, Ireland / Do all Polish newcomers to the UK speak some English? [14]

Are there many new Polish immigrants that do not speak any English at all?

Yes, I am working with one at the moment so we always use him to go outside and do the boring jobs as he only talks in Polish and it is always about his money and how much he earns! The Poles are everywhere and even fill our local leisure centre with employees working in cleaning and serving food ect. Some of the new generation of poles try to hid their polish origins but the accents always give them away.

Language / Polish words shared with the french language [29]

Oh, yes, the Poles have taken a lot of words, you only have to look at dom for a house czlowiek for a man morze for sea and moze for perhaps to see the similarities. The lists go on and on. The Poles are not proud of the fact and try to hid it but it is there clearly for anyone to see.

ctually the Polish language has borrowed words of many languages : German, English, French, Latin,

It has taken a lot of words from Russian too.

You appear to be so confused that not only you cannot produce any truthful statements, but you are even

Rubbish-it is well known that people sitting alone in compartments in trains in Poland can be attacked, their money stolen and then they have been thrown out of the train window to hid the evidence. Why are you obsessed about truth and lies? If Poland is so wonderful then why do you not exchange life in Canada for Warszawa yourself?
