UK, Ireland / 90,000 Scottish Immigrants in Poland! [67]

PolskaDoll, i used to have a scottish teacher (teaching english in my hometown) and when i told him that i like scotch with coca cola he almost got a heart attack :)

Haha, yes, it would most likely be taken straight or "on the rocks" :)

So we have Scotland in Poland

It's not surprising :)

i didn`t know that. sorry, i didn`t mean to offend anyone :) always thought scottish = scotch

I don't think you offended anyone. I wasn't offended anyway. :) Scotch is a drink that the Scots like to drink :)

UK, Ireland / 90,000 Scottish Immigrants in Poland! [67]

in the first part of my sentence i meant scotch as whisky and in the second part i mean scotch blood as in scottish blood.

Probably we'd say "I have Scots/Scottish blood" rather than "Scotch". We generally say we're Scottish or Scots, some people do take offense at being called "Scotch". :)

Mali:
what about sexy men in kilts...

i've always wanted to visit Scotland... ;)

lol - if you hang around any wedding venue of a Saturday afternoon you'll see plenty of men in kilts (all ages), otherwise, I doubt you'll see many unless you visit some tourist attractions where guides etc may wear then as a "uniform" :D

btw, some men really do not suit a kilt, believe me. ;)

UK, Ireland / Glasgow primary schools for the Polish community? [18]

Bigger classrooms, teachers were different, smaller class size, different subjects, swimming pool, grass [decent sports grounds], cookery classes.

Hmm, the words "swimming pool" suggest to me that this was a private school, George Watsons maybe...

school is actually fine, no problems, but making friends out of school can be difficult for him.
Kids are kids and they just accept things at face value, they often adapt better than adults do.

I agree with that. How good is her daughters English? Any way I think that because of her age she would be fine. I think out of school you'd need to make sure she maybe joined a club or something, to keep her active with kids of the same age but szkotja2007 is right, kids adapt easier. 8 is a good age but if you leave it until she is 10,11,12 you will have problems then. Good luck :)

Travel / Krakow going down the toilet! [184]

Britain has the tradition of groups of flying awat for a stag party. And unfortunately the style of drinking involves a lot of noise and aggression.

As sad as that statement is, it's true. It the Brits who have this reputation at the moment, no one else...

Yes, she was here to earn money to help her terminally ill father, who can't even afford to have her body taken back to Lithuania.

Genealogy / Female names ending in 'A'.... why? [23]

Out of this entire list of female names there is one that ends in 'e', the rest all end in 'a' :)

Is it because it is the feminine form of a name?

Lucky you that you could be here for several hours. Thanks to the people who reported the comment.

Not sure what ADM stands for but I guess you mean the moderator ?

ADM probably stands for Admin.

Who moderates the moderators ?

Oh that old one.

So it's time to clean this thread out, after all, it was about the murder of a young woman and the severing of her head and limbs...I thought...

UK, Ireland / Severed Head in Bag is an Eastern European Females [46]

I think by tomorrow they'll have announced that it's a murder inquiry. I just read an article that said there were "unconfirmed" reports that her flat was a blood-bath. The police had been there for hours and hours so there may be something in that.

They also say she lived there with a boyfriend. So where is he? After all, it was her employer who reported her missing. A lot of speculation at the moment though.

Evening Standard
thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23470706-details/Woman+whose+severed+head+and+hands+were+found+on+beach+was+a+migrant+worker+'from+Lithuania'/article.do

This one speculates she's from Lithuania. Who knows? Lets just hope they catch her killer and get some justice for her.

Edinburgh Evening News said: At present the case is not being treated as murder.

No point linking the whole article as it's just the same as the others.

Exactly. I just read that police think her body was dumped after she was killed (British media - you gotta love it) so I don't know what they truly think. Scots law will have something to do with it not being treated as murder yet...

BBC view:
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/tayside_and_central/7327606.stm

Seems that they are only trying to trace her relatives at the moment and that it was her employer who reported her missing. I read earlier (Edinburgh Evening News) that the police aren't treating it as murder...so what is it then?

UK, Ireland / The best place to buy a house in the UK [120]

2-3 bedrooms and she has a small baby so I'm supposing she's looking for a home to bring a family up in. I'm not sure whether she is fussy about where in the country that is.

UK, Ireland / Invisible influx - Brits not easy to mix with Poles? [30]

Could it be that us Brits are not easy to mix with?

It depends on the mentality of the individual. Some people can't see past Britain and won't mix, others welcome new cultures and will make new friends easily.

We parted with smiles and handshakes, where I gave my first name and was left wondering, when they didn't offer their names, whether Poles generally prefer not to mix easily. I had previously met (last year) only a half dozen Poles locally, with only the one (a woman) being chatty.

I think this comes from not being naturally "forward". I don't offer my name unless asked or someone else will mention it. You would have had an answer if you had asked their names.

As you saw, I said the choice of wording could be better.

However, 'Arise' is talking about a community, not particularly himself.

I agree with that.

Many things cause crime, it's not as simple as skin colour.

I agree with that. However, the OP is looking for advice on where to move in the UK. Arise St George provided an opinion.

Well the moderator is still banging on about some property website or other, so you could be right.

Or maybe moderator doesn't think it's overall racist. That choice of words may be strong but the truth is, there are a lot of "white" areas in the UK. Until recently the area in which I live had no black/Asians/Africans at all.

Stir things up?

Your wording could have been better. You've made your point, lets leave it at that.

After all, Isska is looking for somewhere to live, not to be put off.

But really, where I live is not well off, but it's quite a nice place to live. Honest.

If you dodge the street gangs? ;)

I would hardly think that impoverished pensioner is unique to your area, try "most of the country".

UK, Ireland / The best place to buy a house in the UK [120]

I tried that Acorn thing:

Catergory: 2 Urban Prosperity
Group: F Aspiring Singles
Type: 22 Low income singles, small rented flats

Financial Acorn:

Group: J Inner City existance
Type: 42 Low income singles and couples, little financial activity

So I'm still not convinced about these websites. Inner City is not what this area is described as - for example, behind my street, field, golf course, hills. Five minute walk from river, parks, sports ground...

UK, Ireland / The best place to buy a house in the UK [120]

In my street every second house is a holiday home. Its all 200 year old cottages. Both my neighbours are in their 60s. Its featured on a lot of postcards.

Not quite high rise hell !

I think the person who compiled the list failed to actually visit any of the places. I put in a postcode of an area here which would fall under high-rise hell and I got the exact same wording as I got for my own postcode!

My advice for moving to the UK is to pick a city or town you might want to move to and trawl the Internet for properties in the area and do a price comparision and then find out more about the area and then visit the area. It's very difficult to move here if you don't know the country Isska, you'll have to do a lot of research. If you drive and have a car you'll have bigger options.

So I put in my postcode and got......

I put mine in and got:

That website said:
Often, many of the people who live in this sort of postcode will be low income singles living in small rented flats

It's mostly couples living in bought flats of a decent size, up to four bedrooms (most with gardens). Its an old area with hardly any rentals so my overall feeling is this website makes a lot up! :)

UK, Ireland / Are the Poles in England hated? [450]

Its always easier to point fingers at someone else when theres a problem,

I agree with you. The truth is, people make out that the UK was perfect until a couple of years ago. Unemployment, poor health service, poor education provision, they were all problems before. If anything, the arrival of the Poles has pushed the government into thinking about these problems instead of coming out with propaganda like "our NHS waiting list dropped by 50% last year". Of course it did, half the people on the list probably died waiting!

Anyway, I would imagine that unemployment levels have dropped since the Poles arrived - mostly because the Poles have filled the jobs the British unemployed consider "below" them.

Excuse my rant :)

I like the Polish coming here I have a little country inside a city,
if that makes sense?

I have Polish stores, restaurants, pubs..etc

Makes sense to me. I don't spend enough time with my Polish friends but when we get together it's always a fun time and I am always made to feel a part of their group (I am the only non-Polish person when we get together), we don't have so many restaurants or pubs here yet but I look forward to more. Plenty shops though even if I don't often have enough time to visit them. :)

and lets not froget about all the beautiful ladies:)

Or handsome men... ;)

UK, Ireland / Are the Poles in England hated? [450]

Most Americans dont have any problem with the Poles coming here:)

I think most people from the UK don't have any problem either. It's just a pity that people focus on the negative comments from the UK members here or the negative comments in the British media.

Most of the negative comments on here seem to come from people who are un-employed or have been done over in some way by a Polish person. Apart from noimmigration - we've no idea where he comes from ;)
