UK, Ireland / Tide turns as Poles end great migration [26]

do you think the majority of poles who went to the uk sent the greater part of their money home already (whilst still living and working in the uk) or do you think they will be bringing it home with them now?

UK, Ireland / Tide turns as Poles end great migration [26]

A wave of immigration that helped to fuel Britain's early 21st century boom is over, as the Polish plumber and thousands like him go home.

The Times has established that, for the first time since they began arriving en masse four years ago, more UK-based Poles are returning to their homeland than are entering Britain

timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article3378877.ece

what are the implications for poland?

UK, Ireland / Some EXAMPLES of salaries of Poles working and living in the UK. [49]

well, im sitting with a friend who is a doctor drinking coffee... he says he make 3600 plus his private work for which he charges 100 zl per session - usually lasting ten mins or so... he also does additional work at a local hospital but wont tell me what he makes for that

he says that a very recently qualified doctor still doing his training obviously eanrs less, but points out that the minimum wage has gone up this year to something around 860 per month... a little more than 150 pounds and about what a junior teacher might earn... he says even the most junior of doctors would earn more than this

its worth noting that 150 GBP is about 720 zls - not much - and that the article was written in 2004...

News / Storyville: The Polish Ambulance Murders (BBC4) [43]

So according to you, the Polish government purposefully pumps money into the undertaking sector so more people can get murdered?

???? - youve read something into what ive written that isnt actually there

And do you seriously think that if the family did not get this cash, they would settle for a discount funeral with second-hand coffin and wilted flowers?

lets draw a simple anaolgy as youre obviously having difficulties with this one.

imagine you wanted to buy a new car - you scrape together all the money you can get and see that you can just about afford an audi from the late 90s with a high milage. then along comes a sizeable sum of money - lets say 4000zls for sake of argument - which enables you to buy a much newer audi with a much lower milage - according to you, you would have bought this car anyway...despite not having the money... ????

and which car do you think the dealer would prefer you to buy... the cheap clapped out audi or the more expensive newer model...?

lol - youre soo polish

I see you do not understand the Poles.

lol - it seems i have an outside understanding of the poles that might be a little too close to home for you... it seems you have lost your objectivity and are almost defending what took place

i realise these are your people magda but that these murders happened shows unequivically the lenghts some poles will go to for a few extra zloty

but would the money have been there anyway?

there is a substancial difference between what the average pole could pay for a burial if the money was coming out of their own pocket and what they could be charged for a burial if the money was guarenteed by the government. i believe there is a direct correlation between undertakers wanting more business and the funds being made easily available in order to finance this increase

whatever the case, these killings were motivated by greed

Life / Polish attitudes towards drinking alcohol [72]

very interesting programme the other night examining the clasification and proposed reclasification of various narcotic substances using a new set of defining parameters... alcohol and nicotene were among the most harmful and it was suggested that if what is know now was known previously they would both be prohibited

News / Storyville: The Polish Ambulance Murders (BBC4) [43]

The whole tragedy of this story is that in reality it's a free market enterprise gone horrid.

thats stretching it a bit

Firstly, the Polish government does not pay undertakers for burials. The money (zasiƂek pogrzebowy) is paid to the family of the deceased to ease the financial strain of the burial.

thats stretching it a bit too - the money might have gone through the families of the deceased in order to ease the strain (cost) of burial but its obvious whos pocket the money was destined to ended up in

Nevertheless, this money has nothing to do with the ensuing murders, because people would bury their dead even if they never received government aid to do it.

thats not strecthing it - its plain wrong

this money was the sole motivation for the murders. as you quite rightly say, people bury their dead even if they never received government aid to do so but the point is that these people wouldnt be dead if the money wasnt there to fund their burials... as you also said, the ambulance people dont have to wait to get paid until someone actually dies...

Can someone please explain to me really fast what is the story about

government grants to aid burials - undertakers main recipients - more burials=more money - financial incentives given to people to take dead bodies to particular undertakers - mysterious rise in dead bodies - undertakers squabble and the game gets rumbled... or something along these lines...

Don't you know by now BW you can't speak bad about Poland.

i aint never said nufink

News / Storyville: The Polish Ambulance Murders (BBC4) [43]

The authorities are examining 70 cases of attempted murder, although it’s feared that after 10 years of skin-hunting, some 50,000 people may have fallen victim to its exponents.

this is the claim made by the beeb - the size of a small town as you say

Life / Grafitti in Warsaw [44]

i was lead to believe that during the communist era, one of the only true ways of self expression was artistically - be it music, dance or art itself - prolific graff may just be a continuation of this - as i noted, much of what i see in 3M has artistic merit rather than just tagging

Why hadn't the BBC picked up on this earlier?

good question - the report was made by a young polish woman and probably wasnt comissioned directly by the beeb... it can take some time for reports to be made and longer to have them aired on tv... but the truth is i just dont know

this is the link you mentioned for those who want to look further

Life / Grafitti in Warsaw [44]

graff seems to be falling into different categories now - theres urban art and street art which gets displayed in trendy london galleries and bought by saatchi and that other fellow, saatchi for huge amounts of money... then theres the traditional graff done by young and not so young boys who sometimes fall under trains

some guy sold a banksy done on his house wall for something like 1/4 million sovs on ebay... then some little tyke came along and sprayed over it

luvin it

seen some good graff in the 3M over the years... some of it quite banksiesque rather than just mindless mess... although there is plenty of that too

News / Storyville: The Polish Ambulance Murders (BBC4) [43]

What seems to be the most surprising is how minor a story it was in Poland considering we're talking about the murder of thousands of people.

it seems to have been quietly ignored, swept quickly under the carpet in the hope that nobody will notice excatly what happened or the depths to which corrunption and endemic greed permeate all levels of society

truely shocking, to the extent that friends who have watched the documentary dont really know how to respond to it - disbelief
