UK, Ireland / 33% of Poles in Ireland to return to Poland in 2009 [30]

Oh, for sure. I wonder how Poles will be affected in 2009 as, unless we are to believe what plk123 called 'voodoo' economics, the Poles will be up sh*t creek without a paddle. The economic realities here just don't square up. There must be a lot on credit here or some shady shenanigans. "The Polish secret" I was told.

Trust me, I realise very well what is happening. Ever watched the movie Zeitgeist or its follow up Addendum? This provides an expose which is highly revealing. The creation of artificial money. Look at what Bush has done, plunged the US into unprecedented national debt.

It's just a nonsense. Remaining modest is the way forward, to self preservation even. There is so much boom and bust these days, the economy is just a big fake swizz anyway.

The Poles are better off away from that environment.

Life / Bad opinion about Polish people - rumour or the truth? [90]

I'm becoming immune to it, shrugging your shoulders works wonders. My fiancee had a classic at the bank the other day. We waited an eternity for a guy to tell his life story. In the meantime, another old woman said to my fiancee, 'mogę zapytać urzędnika?' and my GF replied clasically, 'yes, after me'. The old woman ignored her and went on to ask anyway.

You know, effects wear off. Episodes like that above have very little effect on me. Old folks are just victims of their times. It was the PKO Polski bank after all. Other banks conduct their affairs courteously :)

Life / Bisons of Poland - your thoughts? [90]

Super picture, Greg. A tense stand-off no doubt. I bet you are glad he faced the shock factor too.

Oh, Bison ;)

Yeah, those ancient forests can be hell. Full of traps and pitfalls. Never seen any war artefacts though.

Oh, Bison ;)

Exactly, what's more, they are faster than us. Walking into a group of them in the forest wouldn't be pleasant. That's why I pump up my tires to the perfect pressure, to give me maximum speed :)

There are wild boar in the forests near Gliwice. I heard them when I was cycling and didn't stick around long. Curiosity killed more than the cat.

There was a guy mauled by one a few years back in the forest between Zabrze and Gliwice. Not a pretty sight.

Where there's a will, there's a way ( I wonder if I'm subconsciously inspired by Obama, I'm listening to him now).

Food / the best cure for hangover-the polish way ;) [76]

Nothing better than running around naked outside in sub-zero temperatures, that'll sharpen up even the dullest soul :)

Or, failing that, some ice-cold water splashed onto your face.

Noimmigration had ECT? Really? LOL ;)

Żubur, what is that? I was talking about the beer Żubr ;) Let's keep it on topic.

I'd love to see a live bison here.

Thanks Greg, that was helpful, just what the thread needed.

There are bison in Bieszczady, I didn't know that. The only bison-like things here are the queues at PKO Bank Polski. They offer rates that'd put even us Scots to shame. Oops, stay on topic. Thanks again Greg

Life / POLISH "WIGLIA" -- NOT JUST ANOTHER BOOZE-UP [12]

It may be a matter of preference. I've spent the last 2 Xmas periods here, so 2 Wigilias. I drank kompot with no alcohol. Alcohol just didn't feature at all but it would've been useful for toasting purposes.

Life / What is an appropriate message or gift for someones name day in Polska? [7]

Should the bottle have something in it? I have an empty Żubr bottle, would that do? ;) ;)

Seriously, a nice key-ring with their name on it would be appreciated. Something symbolic in that name to commemorate the day. Take an interest in the name rather than buying stock gifts. Maybe make a card with that name. Give it a personal touch! That's what I did with my fiancee and she loved it.

Across near Białystok, right? Bison are such beautiful beasts. We used them in our D&D fantasy game. They make good attackers, inflicting heavy damage on foes.

Żubr is a good beer. I saw a lumbering lad walk around the city centre with a big bottle of it in his hands. Cool, civil defiance.

Travel / Any suggestions about taking taxi at night in Poland/Katowice? [11]

More like 80zł. I think they lay on late night buses tho. Worth investigating.

The same is with Krakow. It was a 40-minute bus trip to get to the airport from the centre. I took the train the last time, only 25 mins.

News / Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West [240]

Well, you made me laugh Greg so the objective was achieved ;) ;)

Poland is getting more expensive when it comes to food, you are right Greg.

However, you can still pick up quality fruit&veg for good prices at stalls. I like that.

Please don't move this to random chat, Mods. Seriously, more lightening up is needed. My sincere hope is that Greg laughs after watching this. I promise to get back on topic after this one-off posting.

USA, Canada / Why would someone leave Poland for the US? [120]

Not on a big scale, no. However, Clint Eastwood played a Polish guy in his latest film. He was called a 'dumb Polak' and 'hard-nosed Polak'. There is some polonophobia, just not that much.

Life / Homosexuals in Poland / Hands off (PETITION) [797]

Lesbians were fulfilled before they admitted it, LOL. Sorry, bad joke :(

Seriously tho, his family gave him so much strife that he had to move out. He found another job and was more liberated with a place of his own. The shackles were so inhibiting when he lived at home, poor guy.

I cannot really imagine what it feels like to be gay but I know how heart felt it is, judging by their inner turmoil when outlining parts of their lives.

You were gibbering on about 2 companies, Greg. Pawian was discussing that it's better to receive sth as a symbolic gesture than to be ignored and left out in the cold.

Oh, Greg, we are all aware of the mechanics of EU funding. Just some more than others;)

Life / Homosexuals in Poland / Hands off (PETITION) [797]

I don't know how it works in Poland but we received 'Living and Growing' at the age of 10. That was our sex education. Homosexuality wasn't even introduced to my memory. If so, it didn't make an indelible imprint, hehehe.

Everyone gets it unless there is parental objection. Secondary school can be a telling phase. This is when hormones become rampant and relationships get tried out. It is possible that disillusionment can move a person from AC to DC but I think it needs a lot of inner convincing to make the change. There has to be the gay urge and some element of genetic input.

Men acting weak, Tomek? Better than meatheads in nightclubs.

I've had in-depth discussions with 3 gay men, all close friends. They poured out their heart to me and confirm what you said, Irons.

I'll buy you this book as a present, Greg.
