UK, Ireland / Help - posting a letter to Poland from the UK. [12]

OK, my local post office has recently closed down, and I don't fancy a schlep down to the post office that's about a 20 min walk away.

I need to post an A4 sized envelope containing a 20 page magazine and two birthday cards (average sized, not made of lead or anything like that) to Poland. I don't have any scales so no idea what this weighs...do you reckon that 4 first class stamps will cover this?

Sorry, I know that its a bit of a how long is a piece of string type question, but figure that some of you guys might be able to help me.

Love / About Personal Problems (English / Polish relationships) [32]

Do we if fact give enough alternative angles/answers ?

There seem to be more cases of guys trying to get their heads round the ways of women rather than vice versa.

I think that I tend to provide a fairly typical point of view from the average easy-going British woman.

Sometimes people wind themselves up with their personal problems, so some straight talking should help them to make sense of the situation. Sure it might be a tough pill to swallow, but posting lots of fluffy hugs really isn't the answer.

I guess discussing problems on a forum lets the original poster see a few alternative angles.

In some cases, a poster might feel more able to open up on an anonynmous forum in a way that they can't to people friends or family in real life.

USA, Canada / Why aren't Polish people immigrating to Canada instead of the UK? [148]

Nobody has mentioned it yet. The distance aspect. Surely this must be a factor. It's not exactly cheap to fly out to Canada from here but, depending on the season, it's pretty cheap to get to the UK.

ehm... I did -see post #6

So we all have a fair chance of being tazered at the airport then?

Ouch! I knew that was coming...

Life / WHO OR WHAT IS JOE POLISH? [11]

Search: joe polish

I'm pretty busy today but from my initial search, I'm getting the initial impression of MLM / pyramid schemes and conferences packed full of overweight Americans with unnaturally white teeth evangelising (is that a real word??) about how they made millions of dollars by doing nothing....

Am I right?

Don't drink the Kool Aid, kids....

Franek - you really post a real doom and gloom picture of Poles in the UK.

Oh and I like having Polish people over here in the UK generally. The ones I know work hard, fit in well and know how to enjoy themselves responsibly. Sure there must be bad apples but no more than among the Brits.

100% agree with that.

I guess it is easier to pop home to visit friends and family - 2 hour flight with Wizz or Central Wings... Canada is a bit further (although I do have a real soft spot for Montreal).

Life / Polish products for sensitive skin, are they available in Poland? [17]

What suncreams do you use?

I use this stuff and it's brilliant lavera.com.pl/c5-sun.sensitiv.htm

Much better than the chemical packed stuff

I buy it in the UK (or when I'm in Germany... lots cheaper there), but I found you a Polish link to it.

I would recommend Avene products

Is that the French, thermal water brand?

Travel / Warsaw: A day in the life [16]

I've had ranty days like that when I lived in Italy and Germany.

Get yourself out for a beer with your mates and sit back and laugh at it all. Tomorrow's another day :)

Life / Level of English among the Poles? [64]

She was all shook up, LOL

In The Ghetto actually.... I was trying to introduce a theme along the lines of "hardship in the inner cities" or something like that. All a long, long time ago.

I also wanted to take the older students to an Irish Pub, but the other teachers poured cold water on that idea :(

I'd like to teach English for Academic Purposes (EAP). That'd present a positive challenge.

In what way is this taught differently to standard teaching?

English for Special Purposes

Aha - thanks :)

used to have boring lessons at school...

In one of my classes, I had the students standing on their desks singing Elvis songs.

Got a bollocking from the headmistress for that too <sigh>

In Germany it can be a torture to teach English

There is no discipline in German schools, and teachers don't have any authority to do anything about it. I had kids eating / doing other homework assignments / playing gameboy etc. in class.

One time, I sent a student out of my class and got a bollocking from the headmistress, as he "might have got injured crossing the road". He was 16 FFS!!

Japan for 2 years.

JET scheme?

A few years ago, I tought English in a Gymnasium (High school) in Germany during the day - and at Nachhilfe in the evenings. Nachhilfe is where the parents of the kids who messed around in class during the got sent by their patents who were worried that they wouldn't pass the year.
