I only agree partly on your last post, Seanus. Of course the brave Zegota and other Poles who worked bravely against tremendous odds to help their Jewish friends in need are not forgotten and I am sure that many of them have a spot of their own in the path of the Righteous in Israël. Funny that you mention Szpilman, I quite recently saw the Pianist once more and I was again duely impressed by it.

But I disagree on the part that Hitler came to Poland for its Jews. Hitler saw Eastern Europe as the place to be to fulfill his ideas about "Lebensraum" for the German ppl. And what is the first Eastern European country that you come across when going East from Germany? Right, Poland. If he went there for a certain ppl, he went for ALL ppl there: Poles AND Jews. After all, he tried to kill them all, didn't he? So, I don't think it was particularily because of the many Jews Poland had that he came to "visit" Poland.

Ehm, my significant other is currently a German person, and her predecestrix was a Slavic person, right now I prefer the German one, but that could change in the future :)

But seriously: I always take person per person, I had a bad experience with a Polish chickadee and now I have a good experience with a German chickadee. Next one could be Polish again, who knows. I like German and I like Slavic. So I don't really have a preference in this case.

German food, Polish food and Dutch food doesn't differ much: basically it's potatoes, meat and vegetables. Only difference may be that Poles use a hint more sour in their foods (gherkins, sweet/sour cucumber salad -very common in Holland too- and so on).

What I like as Polish food: Golobki (do I write that right?), Dzurek, Tomatosoup
What I like as German food: Currywurst, Jägerschnitzel, Bratwurst

But both don't compare up to Dutch specialities: salted herring on a white bun with raw onions and pickles, Bami, Nasi, Hutspot or Rode Kool met Hachee and of course a fricandel speciaal and patatje oorlog met uitjes.

translation: Bami: fried noodles with vegetables, meat and certain spices, served with sweet/sour vegetable pickles coloured with saffran, chicken skewers with peanut sauce, ketjap -a certain soy sauce, yes, the word ketchup is derived from that- and seroendeng, a dry mix of cocunut powder, peanuts, chillis, ketjap and sugar. You could add a sweet and sour tomato sauce as well, but that's not mandatory.

Nasi: pretty much the same as Bami, only with rice instead of noodles.

Hutspot: mashed potatoes mixed with diced carrots and onions. The carrots and onions get cooked in the same pan together with the potatoes and then mashed together.

Rode Kool = Red Cabbage: deliciously cooked in vinegar and some sugar, sometimes some pieces of apple go in it as well.

Hachee = a stew of beef, onions, vinegar, bay leaves, pepper, salt and some mace. Takes up to 4 hours to prepare.

Fricandel speciaal: an about 20 cm long saucage made according to a secret recipe, which receives an incision over the entire length before deepfrying. Once done, the saucage will have a nice open gutter in which Dutch mayonnaise (frietsauce - chip-sauce), ketchup or curryketchup and raw onions are put. Gorgeous :)

Patatje Oorlog: chips or french fries with peanut sauce, Dutch mayonnaise and onions.

You misunderstood me. It wasn't a threat at all. What I meant was, if I get approached by racists or being attacked by them for no other reason than me being Jewish, then I will defend myself and I will kick som *ss then. I'm 6 ft 4, give or take, don't know my weight, but I'm considered a pretty impressive statue in general. I hardly ever have fought in my life though, and when I did, I was attacked.

But you, sir, you need to go on a diet with 270 lbs :)


Two things:

1) I for sure accept the fact that Poles have suffered severely during WW2 and in fact, everybody in the West knows that. There is no evil Jewish scheme to withold that information as it is already widely know. Both Jews and Poles have suffered tremendously during the war and on both sides there was collaboration and there were victims betrayed by their own ppl. Or are you trying to tell me that no Pole was ever betrayed by another Pole? Come on, you can't be serious if you think so. Also, the number of Jewish Kapos SEEMS bigger because they always take the Police in the Ghettos into the count as well. Also, there were for some odd reason more Jews present in KZ's than other ppl, so it makes logical sense that there would be a little more (which is not the case, by the way) Jewish Kapos. A difference was that the Jewish Kapos got "rewarded" for their services with the gaschamber and the Polish et al Kapos did not end up in crematoria. There''s a subtle difference there. I'll leave the question of participating out of free will open. A certain amount of force will always be present.

2) Concerning the "assaults" on the Poles. I think Jews and Poles are being offended on this forum likewise. I for one have never assaulted anybody on this forum for the mere reason that he or she was Polish. I didn't get attacked on my Jewishness that much either, besides the occasional oddball. So in all, I think it's kinda overstated to mention that there is such a huge amount of attacks on Poles and/or Jews. Both ppl suffered beyond imagination and I personally think that all that crap should be over with now. It's the 21st century and there simply is no room anymore for an attack on anybody merely based on ethnicity. It's old fashioned and it's time to look to the future, not the past. Learn from the past, enjoy today and look forward to a bright future.

Most ppl around the world call my country Holland and most have a word in their language for it. Because it doesn't look good for politicians on visit to use a kind of slang name for the country they are visiting on high levels.

Did you ever meet somebody from the Netherlands that was called a Netherlander? No? Thought so. We are from the Netherlands, but we're called Dutch. Now there's something different, isn't there? And you know why we are called like that? Because the Americans thought we were speaking German and German in German (nice:) ) is called Deutsch. Of course the Americans couldn't pronounce that, so it rapidly became Dutch. So, you think you can complain or wonder. Wonder how it must be to be a citizen of your own country, but abroad being named as citizen of your neighbouring country!

In Dutch, a person from Poland is called a "Pool" and two or more ppl from Poland are called "Polen", the Dutch name for Poland is also "Polen". And you guys call our country and the ppl who are from it after two provinces in the West of the Netherlands: North Holland and South Holland. Tsk!

Maybe because they live in a rat-infested slum and don't know any better? I remember that by the time they were about to join the EU, some towns in Poland didn't even have a sewer system.


And rightfully so. Disco-polo is crap. Cheap prefabricated nitty-ditties, who are not even nice to listen to. It's the kind of music in which you can hear the breaks towards the end already approaching at the start of the song. While I have nothing agains simple music, there are boundaries. Disco-polo is one of them. German disco-singers of the 80's and 90's is another one. I prefer to listen to rap or hip-hop than to that Disco-polo crap that basically nothing has to do with music, but all with making money - the so-called Stock, Aitken and Waterman effect. It's killing music as a form of free and creative expression.

Even at the height of Gangster Rap there were intelligent noises to be heard: Paris, Public Enemy. I can even appreciate NWA as their rudeness and grossness is supposed to be a statement as well. Listen to F*ck da Police. A better contemporary example of critisism on society and all it's double standard values is hardly to be found.

Why don't ppl simply stop seeing Jews (and other minorities for that matter) as different? I for one maybe a Jew because my mom happens to be of the Jewish faith, but I have been born and raised in the Netherlands, therefore I am Dutch. Religion, once again, should not determine nationality. And I've never been treated any different in the Netherlands than any Catholic or Protestant. I'm a Dutch citizen that, would I be religious, would have been part of the Jewish religion. But that's all that differs me from the rest of the Dutch, the same way as Catholics are different from Protestant. Nothing more, nothing less. But I feel (and sometimes know as I see the evidence) that some ppl, especially in the East of Europe haven't learned from the past and are still anti-semitic. And they think it's correct to be that way. If they want to be part of the West (and they all do), they will have to start learning that it's NOT correct to think like that. Not only with the Jews, but also with the Muslims, Africans and God knows all other minorities. Maybe then, if they get tolerant and racism-free, the West will start taking them seriously when they complain about the mistreatment of Slavic minorities scattered around.

That's actually the most important part of the text. That's what I said as well. There is no proof as such. The fact that he was a commander of a ship, doesn't automatically mean that he's from the area. So I guess we will never know for sure.

Another theory is that Marco Polo never went to Asia. That he heard stories of travelling merchants who did and he just made their stories his own. Actually I read something about that some time ago. Can't remember where, however, I will have a look at it and post it once I found it.

They were, yes. But Marco Polo was probably not one of them as the common census among historians is that he was born in the city of Venice itself, not in the state of Venice. If he were born in the state of Venice there is a pssblity that he might have been Serbian, however, that is unlikely.
