Life / November 11th - Independance Day in Poland [28]

I would have thought now that Poland is asserting herself in Europe that a bigger deal would have been made of these kind of days

- It's our Independence holiday, and contrary to what Wroclaw says, it's been celebrated in free Poland (under the Russian occupation it wasn't). Masses are being said in churches, cemeteries visited, candles burnt.

- Neither have I personally. The English are generally decent people (just as we Poles are). The creep isn't English though, but American. From what this creature scribbles (e.g. the nonsense about Poles being the most racist people and African roads being superior to ours), it seems it's also a special case of 'American' - an apparent member of a very odd and paranoid 'ethnick' bunch whom we Poles indeed aren't fond of, for totally valid reasons. There are decent Americans too, but, frankly speaking, I didn't have the good luck of hitting upon too many of them while in America. On this forum, the guy by the nick of Fish seems to be a very decent American, but he's a Native Indian, so perhaps that's to a large extent why. Oh, and there's also the person calling herself Amirah, and there's of course Shopgirl (who hasn't been heard from for some time now).

Sorry for calling you a 'child.' It breaks my heart to see somebody like you having to earn your living in foreign lands (however amicable they may be), instead of enjoying life in your own country. I really hope you will go back eventually!

If you are part of a good family here (ie dating or married to their daughter) then hey will go out of their way to help you, but do not expect any stranger to life a finger.

Attitudes are more apathetic and negative...cost can be surprisingly high for many things...people can be friendly in the house for dinner but in a shop or government office it is maddening how unhelpful they can be. Rules for everything depend on who you are talking to at the time...and EVERYTHING has a maddening amount of bureaucracy attached to it.

Things that are commonplace in the West like customer service, warranties, good quality goods...are not commonplace here.

Poles are also often very difficult to do business with...they complain a ridiculous amount and are very stubborn when it comes to the littlest things. If you have Poles working for you be prepared for loads of excuses and no accountability really.

life is not as comfortable here in the big picture...most expats don't live here because it is a wonderful place to live...they live here because they have wives, kids or businesses here...and with the massive upcharge on imported goods and cheap labor you can make good business here...it's all about the money for most.

- God forbid me from even thinking about doing such a thing! You exaggerate a bit, honey. Yes, you are bitter, and thus a bit unfair when you blame Poland for not looking after the young Poles. I understand what you feel: I used to feel the same in the past. Today I don't.

Today's youth is in UK, often unwanted and despised.

- Yes, many of them are there, and are treated as you say. They should head back home as soon as possible, and many of them are. When Poland starts doing better economically (which should happen soon), all of them - yes, all of them - will go back home, none will stay.

By the way, I find today Poland modern, lovely, and full of life as compared to many other countries.

One should not believe the media and other compulsive liars and racists, but visit Poland and perceive it with an unprejudiced eye.

But it's not the Polish people's fault that we had the American-imposed Russki occupation (one thug agreed with another thug) for 45 years. And now we're getting back on our feet from the mess mostly created by others. The various thugs, oppressors, and slanderers of us don't know or don't believe this, but our future is bright. Ha-ha-ha, do you really believe that gets in the papers here? It has to be something pretty serious for that, like the bus crashing off the flyover or the small plane crashing on the autostrada.
The papers are too full of articles on which businessman/politician is in prison, which businessman/politician is going to prison and finally which businessman/politician should be in prison!

- Well, so how can you prove you're telling the truth, and not lying? Can you give dates, exact location, tell which bus it was, etc.? I'm really keen on confirming your story.

Actually, when you listen to rado stations in Poland, they inform about any important things happening right now, e.g. in Warsaw.

As for me, I visit Poland frequently, and have never seen any accident, including bus accidents. I wonder why?

As for those other things they write about in papers, they write so in many other countries, don't they?

I grew up in the UK and in 28 years maybe saw 2 accidents actually happen real time and saw the aftermath of an accident maybe once or twice a year. Here in Poland I see a live accident about every 4 months and the aftermath of an accident every second day.

- It's funny, but I (almost) grew up in Poland and have seen very few accidents there.

And I have seen quite a few accdents in the UK.

Isn't it funny how these things work?

- I travel to Poland frequently and have never seen Polish people jumping the queque. In fact, compared to many parts of, say, US, Poles stand in lines quite orderly.

I've got another interesting comparison - with Canada. There, folks that come later e.g. to the bus stop, position themselves right at the top of the line-up and when it comes to getting into the bus, one of the late-comers gets in, then one of the early comers, and so on and on, alternately, until all are in.

It's quite orderly this way.
