Life / UK citizen moving to Poland - some advice required. [4]

Hi Greg....Welcome to Polska....

I am also a Brit who has moved to Poland , and not too far from Szczecin , so you are welcome to come over to my old farm here for a beer and a gril if city life gets a bit hectic....

No doubt some will tell you that getting temp residence and NIP ( national insurance number) is a nightmare , but i found it quite easy , and painless... If your girlfriend is Polish , you won,t have much of a problem i think...

I also got a bank account without too much trouble , i won,t reccomend any in particular , i am with bank pekao sa , but had a few problems with them , not sure which is the best one...?

I too got a bit cheesed of with the UK , and love it here in Polska , its not an easy life , but i think , a better one....

No doubt you will soon be moaning about life in Polska , there are some things here that take a bit of getting used to , but if you try to forget your British ways , go with the flow , and accept life here with an open mind you will love it...best of luck to you.....

Travel / Travelling to Poland (mostly Szczecin area) in a week! Tips and attractions? [10]

Wildrover that military museum sounds awesome

Well i spent a good few hours there... They have lots of suits of armour and weapons from the tuetonic knights era ,second world war stuff , both Polish and german , and outside Russian aircraft , tanks and armoured vehicles...

The museum is in the centre of town , and not far from it i found an outside market where i bought an German iron cross for not so much money...

While you are in Ko£obrzeg you can have a pleasure cruise on the baltic , and enjoy all the usual stuff of a seaside holiday resort...

I recommend you buy yourself a book called rough guide to Poland , you can look up whatever town you are in and see what attractions are there , as well as seeing where all the local resteraunts , pubs and nightclubs are , its also got lots about Poland generally , and includes lots about the culture and such things..

I have lived in Poland for five years , if that is of any relavance.....

And finally....is there a legal limit to how many beans you can keep without a licence....? thank you...

You don,t have to stand on them to upset them....just going too near the nest can be enough....If they think you are a threat , they will come after you....

horseflies and hornets here

Yep , the sting from a horsefly is quite painfull , and hornets are not too much fun either....Last summer i had to call in the local fire brigade to remove a large hornets nest from one of my outbuildings.....Wasps nests i am willing to tackle myself , you get stung a bit , but no big deal , but hornets are critters best left well alone...if you get stung by enough of them , you can die....

You bought yourself a Jeep in the UK,

Yes , i did...but to fly to UK , sort out the Jeep , pay for ferry back to Holland , and fuel it to Poland took all my last pennies , so cash is a bit short right now....

I am sure i could find 80 zloty for a doctors visit , but if i have this disease i suspect one doctors visit is not gonna fix it...

Since speaking to the expert Babcia , i have spoken to others that say that tics carrying virus ARE in Poland , so i am going to go see a doctor , hoping that my health card and my passport will ensure free treatment.....

Life / I came for dental work. Language/cultural problem in communicating in Poland [3]

There are cultural differences between Polish people and Americans...you are finding them out the hard way....

All that you have spoken about does seem to be common in Poland , and people seem to accept it , of course its much more of a problem for somebody with limited time due to a visa , i think you need somebody who speaks fluent Polish to deal with this on your behalf....

I should not worry too much about people hanging around outside shops , its something people tend to do , and the exitement of discovering you are American may be just due to the fact they have never met one before...

Of course you need to be carefull , as you have discovered , there are people who won,t think twice about punching you and taking your money , but i would say you are a lot safer here than in the USA , there are bad people everywhere , especially in cities...

Where i live in Poland women seem to feel quite safe walking around alone at night , not something they would feel safe doing back in the city where i lived in the UK....

My advice is to get somebody Polish to do some shouting on your behalf , and no you should not worry about making sure its all ok before you come over , even if it offends somebody....

Travel / Travelling to Poland (mostly Szczecin area) in a week! Tips and attractions? [10]

Gday sport...welcome to the forum....Don,t know a whole lot about Szczecin , but i do know there is a castle there which you could have a look around , not sure about any museum , but somebody on here may know of one...

I do know there is a very interesting military museum in Kolobrzeg , just up the coast from Szczecin where they have lots of arms and armour from the knights of old right up to Russian tanks and missiles from the 60s... I have been to this museum , and its very interesting...

I am not sure where the nearest national park is to Szczecin , but north of the city is the Puszcza wkrzanska which is very green and pretty , fraid you won,t find any mountains though , you have to go a long way south in Poland to find the Tatra mountains , very pretty , and maybe worth the trip....

I don,t know how hard it is to get to Wolin by public transport , but somebody on here will for sure , i see on my map there is a rail line to it , so probably easy enough and there is a national park there too , so you could have a look at that ...

Hang around mate , i am sure there will be a Szczecin local along soon that will help you better than i can....have a nice stay in Poland....

Feedback / Idiot's FAQ? [8]

Life / Gun-range Practice At Night [14]

in my area is a heavy artillary range...but its far enough away to be only a distant rumble...like thunder...does not keep me awake...as for Nauczyciels complaint , you would think that there are enough open spaces in Polska to shoot off their guns away from built up areas where people are not going to be disturbed....
