Travel / 1st impressions of poland - Borat on billboards [12]

what jokes?

Years and years ago, the Borat character did a brilliant send up of some etiquette school in Chelsea.... bloody hilarious.

But the character was dead by the time that the American film came out.

He is the most stupid person.

True - and the jokes and the mankini are getting a bit tired now... but he does remind me of some Central Asian Journos that I used to work with :D

UK, Ireland / How to phone the UK from Poland. [8]

Can no-one answer my questions about public call boxes, please?

Like in the UK, phone boxes are being phased out as more and more people use mobiles and calling cards.

Love / What are the chicks like in Poland ? [69]

Are those the spray on ones? Or the ones one gets from a tanning bed/salon?

I'd describe anything that comes out of a bottle "fake tan" however sunbeds are also wrongity-wrong in my book. Tanned skin is basically dammaged skin - no matter what we've been brought up to believe about tanned being a healthy glow etc.

fake tan capital of the world!

Because we're all so pale.... though to be honest, I don't use the stuff.

Pale and proud... look at Julianne Moore <swit-swoo>

Life / When in Poland, should I be British or Scottish? [104]

scottish

The correct term is Scots accent.

Not plastic ones with english accents who think they are scottish because of their mummy and daddy

But I lived in Scotland until my early teens, you numpty.

My genetics / heritage / nationality didn't change as soon as I hit Carlise :D

Life / When in Poland, should I be British or Scottish? [104]

You're from Hamilton,

Holy Moly.... how did you know that??

I guess though, to complicate matters, it's not obvious from the first impression that I come from Scotland. Sure, I look 10 out of 10 celtic, however I have a fairly English accent.

Life / When in Poland, should I be British or Scottish? [104]

I spend a lot of time in Poland these days.... and back in London, I've started to make friends with some brilliant Polish guys and girls.

So, the question is - do I emphasise the fact that I am Scottish, or British? I sometimes find that the French for instance are more sympathetic to fellow celts. Does it matter much to the Poles?

By the way, it's not like I walk around with my nationality on my sleeve, however if asked, I usually say that I am British, though I do pick people up when they describe me as English.

News / Poland ends conscription. [11]

I'm actually torn on the idea of national service, most people in England say it was the worst thing we ever did to get rid of it.

Me too - on one hand, I think that it would set up a lot of young guys for life, and train them in basic skills and get them fit. But at the same time, not everyone is cut out for army life, and it could be hell for some.

What's the deal re national service in Poland?

USA, Canada / Why are the tickets to Poland from the US so expensive? [7]

How much is a flight to the UK? How about a few days in brilliant London and then travel on to Poland via Stansted - I'm off to Szczecin next month for £13 return, including all taxes etc. thanks to Ryan Air.

UK, Ireland / Polish Music Festival in London (and I'm a bit miffed) [22]

the tickets are free

I know, but getting hold of the tickets is a complete nightmare. Am now starting to wonder if it's going to be worth the effort. Any other PFers going?
