Law / Poland -One of the fastest growing economies [28]

and the reason for this, Poland joined the EU :) If Poland was not part of the EU it would be in exactly the same position as it was in 2004. TO say 'Poland' has done this is rubbish, its EU driven and funded :) Let's not beat about the bushes here people

Of course this rapid growth in polish economy happened due to funds from EU. And? What exactly does it change in the statement that "Poland is one of the fastest- growing economies in Europe and looks to stay that way for the foreseeable future."?

If you would take another look on the part of the article quoted by Patrycja you would see that it was actually already mentioned there:

Poland is one of the fastest- growing economies in Europe and looks to stay that way for the foreseeable future. Poland’s 2006 GDP growth was in excess of 5% by most estimates and 2007 is set to keep pace. Strong foreign investment, European Union structural and infrastructure funds, excellent industrial growth and falling unemployment are playing key roles in this ongoing success story.

Nuff said.

Well maybe aside from:

I mean I really have nothing against a working and successfull Poland, it's a great market for german exports and the more money poles have in their pockets the better for us too...but it would be really nice to get a "Thank You" sometimes or at least a recognition how much Germany did for Poland.

Thank you. :)

PS:

Oy vey... We've had strong growth for most of post-89...

True.

History / More Revision of Historical Fact in Ynet News Israel (Poles engaged in slaughter of Jews?) [72]

Apart from Poles of course. No Poles are ever racist. Polish football fans only ever threw bananas at black football players because they were concerned that the player might need a healthy snack during the game to give him a burst of energy.

Way to go Harry! What a great idea to describe one nationalities opinion of black people through the behavior of football hooligans. What next? Depicting British society’s approach to gay people through british skinhead subculture or Scandinavian opinion of Christianity through Norwegian black metal fans?

PS: My friend just applied for Irish citizenship (he spent almost all his life in Poland). Do you think once he will acquire it the Irish will consider him Irish?

News / Polish "brainbox" comes back to Poland from the UK for a better education [77]

What's the unemployment rate here?

It's not hard to find a job here. The problem starts with finding a job with "proper pay".

As for the unemployment rate, I think southern wrote somewhere on this form that it is 11%. It must be definitaly smaller here in Wielkopolska. (I think that in Poznań it is somewhere between 2-4%, but lets wait for £ukasz to confirm it)

UK, Ireland / Statistics: How many Polish people in the UK? [23]

2003:3.3 million people in Poland registered as unemployed.
2008:1.7 million people registered as unemployed.

Southern, you fail to notice that being registered as unemployed and being unemployed isn't actually the same thing. A lot of people, prior to Poland’s accession to EU, claimed to be unemployed and at the same time worked illegally. That way the employer didn’t have to pay for their healthcare, etc and the employee was given more cash in his hand. And since he was registered as unemployed he was entitled to free healthcare, etc...

Travel / Finally moving to poland (Poznan)! [28]

Aaah I'm going to Poznan this summer! End of July to mid August. I would looove to hit up some of those music festivals, especially The Police! Is it free?

Holly ****, I live in Poznan have for almost 2 years. Please tell me more about these concerts.

Are the Sex Pistols reforming? With Johnny Rotton?

I am stoked!!

Ohh dear, I caused quite a confusion here I must say.

The Police will play on the 26 of June in Chorzów (unfortunately it is not free) while Sex Pistols are on the Opener Festival in Gdynia ( I think with Johnny).

As for Poznań, I know that Nelly Furtado will play there on 11 of July. I guess this information won't be of any help for kotik and Kaylyn though. :(

UK, Ireland / The Independent about Poles in the UK: "Poles are under attack." [83]

A very diplomatic answer, I must say. :)

The whole moaning thing is just a result of unfulfilled hopes, I guess. My great-grandfather was a very cheerful fella ( or at least that was what my grandfather used to say). He was one of the participants of the Greater Poland’s Uprising (one of two successful polish uprisings). My father on the other hand, is a great fatalist.

One German guy said once that poles are either romantics or skeptics, which basically makes sense as a skeptic is just a disappointed romantic. :)

People do moan, but it is getting better. When I was a little boy, a normal answer to "How are you" was "Don't even ask!". Now it's "Powoli" (slowly). So it's all going in the right direction. :)

Again, well said. Where does this antagonism come from? I love many of my students but I've noticed so much ill will flying around in the country in general.

Thats sounds intersting. What do you mean by that seansus?

Travel / Finally moving to poland (Poznan)! [28]

The Malta festival will be from 23-28 June. As for Polish folk music, since the communists tried to use it for their purposes it's been generally in decline. Still, last year I've been to the Ethnosfera festival in Skierniewice and it was loads of fun. I will check for you whether it will take place again this year.

PS: Being English and not liking the pistols. tsk tsk... :)

yes, much easier. the hardest part would be learning the Cyrillic alphabet. polish and russian are very much alike from what I understand.

Dear God, I forgot the Cyrilic alphabet. That will be quite a challange for moi. :)

Elvis Costello and street theatre

Well than, International Theatre Festival in Malta Poznań is the place to be. I will be present at The Police gig on 26 June, but Elvis Costello will play in Poznan at 28 June, so what do you say? Or mabe you are also thinking to see The Police? Or Sex Pistols in July?

you should throw french out the window. russian is much more practical =)

Both sound amazingly. But I guess because of all the slavic factor I would probably learn Russian easier than french. :)

I'm from Poznan, drop me a line if anything :)

Malta festival? :)

Russian you say? I niet gawarit pa ruskaja język. :p After I brush up on my deutsch and start to learn some francois, the next foreign language I would like to learn the basics from would have to be Russian.

News / Why does Poland love the US? [144]

celinski:
Neither NATO nor the European Union can provide sufficient security to calm Poland's fears, particularly with Russia now resurgent to its east, and so the government in Warsaw wants the United States to base part of its planned antimissile system here to provide an American guarantee of safety, according to Poland's defense minister.

farcical.

Why do you think so Bubba?

well that proves my point....why try to go against russia when you can go with them. The US is across the atlantic..since when do long distance relationships work ?

True. But close distance relationship can be far more disastrous in the end. You know, the whole collision of interests, etc...

Life / Cultural readjustment... returning to Poland from the West. [58]

I will pay attention to it next time I'm in Poland...and that's May 7th.
From the people in the airport, to the grocery store, to the people on the street, to the people in dental office. Everything.

I expect an interesting report when you get back from your trip Eurola. :)

Seriously though, it really would be interesting to see how you experienced Poland, especially as it was a long time since you have been to Poland the last time.(am I right?) Have fun. :)

News / Wojtek Cejrowski gives up his Polish citizenship! [19]

POLAND is rated as one of the least friendly places for entrepreneurs/small businesses in the world. Maybe he wanted to start a business and had enough.

Well not really. Cejrowski thinks of Europe as a place for pensioners and old German tourists on wheelchairs. Ecuador is a more of a challenge for him plus he does seem to be into Latin American culture. As for his person, I think mirandas description was pretty much spot on. He definitely is witty but too arrogant if you ask me. He seems to be quite an open minded person but acts like a catholic fundamentalist at times. All in all definitely an interesting character but his moaning, even if witty, gets on my nerves.

-edit-

Is Poland really one of the least friendly entrepreneurs?

UK, Ireland / Polish students are rising to the top of the class [30]

Yeah, my friend worked for some time as a teacher in high school and gimnazjum here in Poland and said to me that the level of education was definitely higher in "our times". Maybe it's just an international phenomenon?

Life / Where would you rather live in Poland? [54]

Never been to Poznan, but must be a lovely city (and i like its football club, Lech Poznan, very nice stadium)...

Well Poznań isn't the top tourist spot, but Poznanians are truly great people. Of course I live in Wielkopolska so I can be biased. :)

As for my pick, I had a tough time deciding between sunny Katowice and Gorzów Wlkp. I finally decided to vote for the latter because it is a vibrant city full of business and sex. NOT. ;P

Life / Are Polish People Racist? [1037]

lol... dude, you've got issues... what's next ? "Oy vey ! My grandfather was Jewish and parents of my girlfriend were trying to kill me when they found out !!". You're a joke, not even a funny one.

Hahaha...

They are all worth each other :))

They are in deed. I think he should contact Jerry Springer or this "Wife swap" program. That would be interesting. :)

Life / How easy is it to get into trouble with the Police in Poland? [26]

Well than, thats quite a original way to complimant a person, but thank you. It takes a great man to aprieciate another great man. ;)

I also understand now your sceptic aproach to polish police. Still, we were talking about, and I quote:

Being here, I'm afraid of getting into a fight because 1: I don't want to feed the "violent black man" stereotype, and 2: I feel that if I were to get into a fight, about 100 other poles would jumb in to kick my ass, and 3: I don't know what could happen with the police should they get involved.

If one couldn't count on the police when attacked by a gang of thugs than how could we call Poland "państwo prawa"? ("the land of law"??)

Life / How easy is it to get into trouble with the Police in Poland? [26]

Matyjasz, for such a smart guy, that was a stupid comment. In theory, the police are there to help u but that'd reflect in the faith in the police force. Look at studies that disprove this. Many people get paid for sth and make a hash of it.

Should I feel complemented or offended? :)

If demanding from the police to do their job is just a wishful thinking than what is the purpose to have them in the first place? Do you really think that low about polish police?

Well, depends on the context.

True. One could offend someone calling him a princess, still it doesn’t mean that the word princess is offensive.

Sadly, I read that police when approached by black folks who got racially abused generally aren't doing much to tackle with that problem. They just don't want to get involved and make everything to discourage offended people from prosecuting their offenders. It's a real shame.

If that’s true than it is really a very sad state of affairs.

Black policemen here, IMHO, would be targets for racial hatred. They wouldn't command the respect of many communities and would likely get set upon whilst doing their beat/patrol.

Those who abide the law wouldn't mind, and those who don't, don’t respect "psy" anyway. But I do see your point.
