Cupiał - a Polish surname?

Polack2

Hello,
I am a 5th generation American living in Mobile, Alabama, with the last name Cupiał. I am wondering if this is a Polish last name, and if so, from which region most likely? I have searched the internet, and have found many Cupiał's in Poland, but spread out. Can anyone tell me if this is a typical Polish name or not? I have never been told by my father/grandfather etc.. They know that a Cupial came from Krakow in the mid 1800's and that is it..

Any help is appreciated greatly!

Stefan

I'm not into genealogy so I can't help you, I just wanted to inform you that Bgdan Cupiał, one of the richest Poles, is the owner of Wisła Kraków (best Polish soccer team in last years), and he was born in Śląskie voivodship, so maybe he's your 1.5 billion $ relative :)

ahh! yes, Bogdan Cupiał. I have seen his name around. From what I know however, my original grandfather came from Krakow, from a town nearby called Krzeszowice if I am pronouncing it right.. Thanks for the comment though, and hope for some help!

never say never :)

you would be surprised at what you find.. anything is possible :)

I have never heard of that name.. common names are the ones to watch out for.
I wouldnt be surprised if you had some type of connection.. have you wrote to
the parish where your family came from?

hehe, yes, maybe just maybe he is my billionaire relative : ) I will write him a letter.. : )

No, I have never written to my Parish. I'm not even sure where he is from. I don't think my family is in the possesion of this papers.

How would I go about doing this?

I'm not even sure where he is from.

this is something you need in order to dig further..

I dont have ancestry right now so I cant help you , anyone who does have it can
you please do a look up for him?

one thing to do also is while finding this.. you need to trace their information
here.. where you believe they might have immigrated to.. was it alabama?
or some other state? and follow the details of your grandparents..

what i mean by that is.. if it shows them born in another state.. then you would look
in that state if you were able to look at cencus records.. this gives detailed trail
of where they originally landed.

sometimes you get lucky and there will be a cousin who might have come to stay
with the family.. it will show them coming to your relatives in that city at that time.

I can only help you this way.. unless you have ancestry. or someone who might
be willing to do a look up. :)

Hey again, thanks for the info plk. I tried that website, and I only found one female Cupial that came over in 1908... Seems like the last name is not that common.

Caroline, most of my family is from that region as well, South-south-east Poland. Maybe we are related? : )

Yup, there are still some there in the ancestral area. Seems like the Kraków area is a hotspot. Start from your family and work backwards and then consider contacting potential lost relatives in Poland. Caroline11 or parents may still have contact with people back in Poland. Compare family trees.

Dziekuje czi Lisie : )

Thanks for your help. Yes, from what it seems Krakow and that surrounding area is a hotspot, and probably where the name originated.. Does Cupiał Polish to you? I've heard people say it sounds French, Romanian or Slovakian/Czech as well.. Almost sounds like a Goralskie (Highlander) surname with the ł sound at the end.

What do you think, Czerwony Lis?

Caroline, have you looked for any more information?

I could not find it in Hoffman Polish Surnames: Origins and Meaning, but he covers a majority of the more common names. And nothing even similar. Just being in the Krakow area could make it Góralskie but I can't say it is. In Polish the name kinda sounds cool prounced "chu pea ow"

Cupiał imay be related to the now obsolete word cupień meaning a strip of land jutting out into water (a point or promontory). In modern Polish it is cypel. But it could also derive from the verb cupać meaning either to scoot down or tap the flloor/ground with one's hoof (said of of animals). Re horses it cna mean a trot.

There are more than 1,700 Cupiałs in Poland with the largest concentrations found in the south around Katowice, Częstochowa and Kraków. For more information please contact research60@gmail

Hi there...
Did you see there are a lot of Cupial on facebook ?

I am french, but all the family comes from Poland (my gran mother), Krakow (Cracovie in French) I think, I should ask my father precisely...

My Gran Mother had 13 brothers and sisters and most of them went to France, in the north. A lot of Cupial are cousin but we don't know each other.

I heard that a cousin of my grand mother had travelled to USA, and became an actress... (was it real ?) My father told me that they received mail and gift from USA while it was the second world war in France. Maybe it was in your family, Stefan ? :-)

Greetings from France, in Paris.
I will be happy to have information on you, do not hesitate to contact me on face book.

Antoine Cupial.
