Looking for yummy Makowiec

Makowiec/poppy seed loaf was a childhood favorite of mine, I have to go far out to find it in the few polish bakeries I know of... but I haven't had a good one in years. My last few were soo dry gritty and bland and the bread tasted like it was the last stale loaf in the supermarket at 3 am or something.

What makes a good poppy seed loaf?? Shouldn't it be sweet with honey? I'm thinking I want to try and make one myself... if I'm not very kitchen savvy how difficult is it? (scale of 1 - 10!)

open that fat NYC phone book. there have to be many bakeries there.

makowiec is kind of a hassle to make:

and here is one for the bread machine:

Welcome to the forum.

There was a bread thread once, that I started. I can't remember if there was anything useful there or not.

I think the answer is something like there are many different kinds of bread, probably more than one with poppy seed, so it may take some searching.

Thanks PLK where can I snag a phone book? lol! I really like that recipee, I printed it out and shall to call upon any polish person I know to see if they can help me make it! Why not?? (My roomate just gave a long blank stare)

Thank you Osiol for the welcome ^__^ Maybe the yucky breads I've had were'nt really makowiec, maybe I shoulda eaten them with butter lol. Polish bakeries overwhelm me a bit. Thanks for the thread, it's great. I'm big on bread!

Hi, Hana. I just purchased enough Makowiec to feed my son's 2nd grade class--found it at a local Polish deli (near San Francisco), but it was made by "Andy's Deli & Mikolajczyk Sausage Shop" in Chicago, IL 60630. You could try Googling Andy's Deli to see if they ship it . . . it's very good--moist on the inside, with white frosting that my boys really like. Good luck!

what are you guys talking about?
1/ makowiec (baked pastry with lots of poppy seed mixed with other ingridients inside plus some sugar icing)
2/ chleb z makiem (normal bread with poppy seeds over it)
