Ah, golonka! I love it. The first time I saw it on a menu the translation was knuckle of pork. I thought that meant something like pig's feet so I didn't order it. Pity. There are a couple of restaurants in Gdansk that serve good golonka but the best I've had was at a restaurant in Warsaw. I wish I could remember its name...

Also love golombki and pierogi z miesem.

eat less.

Yeah right....I'm known for my eating abilities :]

Might enter a contest one of these days. Not speed eating, but just eating a ton of food at once.

Some of the smaller guys can put the big dudes to shame. Preston Lacy of Jackass is a lardass but he can't eat as much as some smaller guys. I recommend buffets El Gato

In Poland you are more likely to die of old age trying to get ANYTHING done than to be chopped up.

I think you are safe.

^^this is not the whole truth. A Spanish student got so badly beaten coming home from a disco one night.. err, morning, that he ended up in a hospital, getting his nose remodelled and an eye surgery. He got hit by a glass bottle.

I suggest staying in a group, not wondering around alone, and trying not to show off in front of the drunk Poles.. :)

Still, it won't beat 'hostel'. I wouldn't worry about that. ;)

As to eating habits in Poland. It changes. And as much as I appreciate Polish cuisine, I'm glad we're not doomed to only eat golonka and bigos any longer. I plan on living to an old age. :)

The sky is falling the sky is falling!

In ANY country where young people are drinking and partying at night there will be some incidents. I have lived in the center of Warsaw for years and seen ZERO violence even when walking around at all hours alone going to and from all areas of town.

Most Poles just like to make noise when drunk...they won't do anything.

The violent worries in the city are exaggerated horribly.

What do you think young English blokes come to Poland for? :) (I generalize, ok? I'm sorry)

I assume Andy is young and coming to Poland to have some fun. I trust that it's better to be warned than sorry. We do want people to have fun here. But we'd rather they weren't careless and thinking it's like in e.g. Scandinavian countries.. you might just have been having your lucky times staying in Warsaw, Jones, or you're just not asking for troubles.. or both. ;)

Well that is my point...it is no worse than Scandinavia. It is some myth perpetuated here that is is so scary and dangerous in the city at night.

My fiancee has lived in the center her whole life and she even acts all nervous like that...yet she has never experienced or known anyone that has experienced and problem.

It is fear mongering honestly....it is not any more dangerous here than any other modern/ semi modern place.

Eating out is adversely affected by the financial crisis. Prince was right to show that Poland's economy has emerged relatively unscathed but many whipped up a frenzy about it.

I can only comment for Gliwice but there isn't much variety by way of restaurants. Eating out isn't popular here I imagine. The mountaineers restaurant does a roaring trade, largely due to rich businesspeople digging deep and getting merry.
