What makes you think so?

The rucksack look as an English one and the guy looks a bit like my English friend who came to visit us in Poland a few years ago.

Was he alone? Because the pink jacket which is attached to his rucksack doesn`t look like his, rather his wife`s or even granddaughter`s. I am looking at other photos of that moment, I can see a boy carrying a backpack with a big Union Jack on it.

Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw.
With a total height of 237 metres it is the tallest building in Poland.
Constructed in 1955,

Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw.

Don't think so.... why would there by a sign municipal parking in Warsaw?

And it looks different - the Palace of Culture (which I always used as an orienteering aid in Warsaw) has a tall central tower with two narrower towers and surrounded by four lower towers... this is more mixed looked and the part with the clock looks different too.

There are similar buildings scattered throughout Central and Eastern Europe. I remember one in Prague (when I saw it 20 or so years ago it had been turned into a hotel) and in Bucharest Romania the TV (I think) building looks like the Palace of Culture with about 20 floors cut off. I'm sure there are others.

But I'm thinking this is a building that just happens to look a bit like it, maybe in the US

Yes, maf, this is the USA. Sorry, the Staff played a joke on me hahaha as I intended to start a USA riddles thread but after a long discussion the idea was rejected. This photo was supposed to be in the new thread which was created and dissolved after 2 hours.

As for the building, I indeed took the photo of it because its semblance to PKiN in Warsaw was quite striking. Very similar architectural style . So Jonhhy and Dirk were also right.

The Pałac Kultury in Warsaw wasn't originally intended to be so tall. Russian architect Lew Rudniev wanted the Palace not to exceed the height of 120 m at the most (today, it is the height of the main tower), but the Polish comrades who accompanied Lew Rudniev and his group observing the baloon setting its proposed height wanted it to go higher and higher.

The architecture of the Pałac Kultury was motivated by Polish historical architecture and American art deco high-rise buildings, which buildings in turn motivated the architecture of the Moscow "Seven Sisters" tall buildings on which Mr. Rudniev looked upon. The Palace of Culture in Warsaw is sometimes informally referred to as the "Eighth Sister".

Thus, the Palace of Culture and Science comprises elements of the Polish, Soviet and American 'soul' in itself.

Yes, maf, this is the USA.

There are thousands of buildings like that in the vast country of the U.S.A.
It's nothing special being in the mid size range.
It would be like trying to find a particular kabob shop in Poland.

No, Johnny, there aren`t thousands. Only a few dozen. Google USA clock towers and you will see how many there are. That was supposed to be an easy riddle. :):)

The architecture of the Pałac Kultury was motivated by Polish historical architecture and American art deco high-rise buildings,

So, after all, the photo above perfectly suits this thread.

What matters is their posture.

Well they're all stood up.......waiting for something?

I could show you our trip to Bieszczady in a seperate photo story

A new thread? Go for it :)
OP pawian 223 | 24,390
11 Jul 2019 #2,833
Not waiting. Well, yes, a little, but the riddle is about sth more important. Look at their arms/hands. Most of them are held in the same way. Why? When and where do people adopt such a posture as a whole group?

The third hint in this post: what do you think about the central figure? :):)

OK, I will go for it and we`ll see how it will end. :)

I can't see their hands that well! I did notice the guy in white, but wasn't sure if he was a priest or not. Praying? Although their arms and hands don't seem to suggest that to me......

once Orthodox, today RC.

I wondered about that because during searches, I kept coming across ' cerkiew' instead of 'kościół '. I had to look that up as I'd never heard that word for church, and found that it refers specifically to churches used for Eastern Rite, Greek-Catholic or Eastern Orthodox.

Yes, maf, this is the USA.

I know it is not in Chicago and being that old (I bet close to 100years old) it would have to be around New York someplace.

No, Johnny, there aren`t thousands. Only a few dozen.

There are 167 pages of them.
And who would want to go anywhere near New York besides tourists.
OP pawian 223 | 24,390

Praying?

Well, you are so close. Praying is a part of what they are doing.

I kept coming across ' cerkiew' instead of 'kościół '.

Before WW2 the Orthodox religion was widespread in the area. After the war, it was decided that Poland would become a homogenous country and most Orthodox inhabitants either left on their own or were resettled to finish their aid to partisan Ukrainian nationalists.

it would have to be around New York someplace.

Yes, NYC and built in 1920s.

There are 167 pages of them.

164. And not of them, but with them. Each page is for a seperate tower. :)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Clock_towers_in_the_United_States

So I was quite close when I said a few dozen after you said thousands. :):)

But I still meant sth else. Your 167 pages show all towers, even those traditional ones, while I meant "tower" as a high rise building with residents/businesses. Sorry, I probably was too succinct.

Back to Bieszczady

What does the GPS show?

There are thousands Pawian.
I wouldn't pull your leg as I live here and have been across and up & down this country several times.
Here is a whole page of them and it is far from being all of them.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Clock_towers_in_the_United_States
See.......

Sorry, I probably was too succinct.

Yes you sure were because you do not realize how big the United States is.
Hell we have a clock tower in the little town that I live in as there are THOUSANDS of them in the U.S.A.

Oh and the correct answer is the Greene in NYC.
Thanks for the brain workout.

What does the GPS show?

A winding road.

Yes, but that was obvious. I wanted more details, facts etc. I mean some formal facts, and not that the road winds left first, then right and then again left. :)

Next riddle though the previous two ones haven`t been solved yet. But I want to finish this Bieszczady series.

What is happening exactly?

The building is the middle finger building in Brooklyn-don't know its real name. The cupola looks kind of like the hoover tower's at stanford univ.

So my answer of Greene clock tower of New York was wrong ?

I was talking about Bieszczady riddles.

But if you insist so much, yes, your answer was wrong cause Greene is the name of the neighbourhood while the building has its own names, former Williamsburg Savings Bank Tower, now turned into condos and called 1 Hanson Place.

Yes, Ant, it is in Brooklyn.

Don't believe me, believe Wikipedia.

Hmm, in another thread you advised not to believe wiki. :):)

Is that you, this handsome guy in the picture, Pawian?

Yes, it is me, many decades ago. :)

But if you insist so much, yes, your answer was wrong

Your original question was:

What and where?

My answer was:

my answer of Greene clock tower of New York was wrong ?

Now I say to you Professor, go google Greene Clock Tower and tell us what picture comes up if it is different than yours.
OH LOOK, the same exact building. How about them apples.
Then tell us what State it is located in.
OH LOOK, the same exact State that I posted.
Now if that is true, which it is, how is my answer wrong when I answered your question of what (clock tower) and where (New York) ?

If you want to play that game Pawian I could say that you are wrong because it is located in the United States.
That would make you wrong using your rational. lol

Praying is a part of what they are doing.

Some sort of blessing then?

What does the GPS show?

I probably won't fare too well on this one because I don't have satnav and have never seen a display either!
All I can see is some sort of yellow marker? Showing distance I think. Amount of kms either driven or to cover to go back to your home? 893 seems quite a lot though, or are you going up a mountain and that is it's height lol? You've covered 23kms in 21 minutes going up a steep road? I make that 22 mins. 6.3 kms to the next exit? No idea really.

Doesn't look like a normal road though, as I would have expected to see more information, some kind of trail?
Knowing you, there will be some completely obscure answer needed I'm sure ;)

Some sort of blessing then?

I can`t bear this pain any longer! ::)

Blessing is also a part of it, like praying, because it is a mass service for the religious youth camp or pilgrimage or whatever. When I went on such camps a few decades ago, we also attended services wherever it was possible, even on the shore of a lake (sailing camp), with only one table brought from somewhere.

893 seems quite a lot though,

This pain is unbearable, I will confess to everything. :)

893 is the number of the road, it is a part of the main road which goes through Bieszczady, called the Great Serpentine. It is very winding and dangerous if careless but very attractive for its views and historical monuments

Nope, not being religious, I would have expected mass to be in a church, so if you hadn't told me, your pain would have been raised to excruciating levels ;)

893 is the number of the road,

Hahaha! Now I do feel dumb! So obvious once you know! I can only hope I've fared better over on the idioms thread :)

I will confess to everything. :)

Confession is good for the soul :)

Hahaha! Now I do feel dumb! So obvious once you know! I can only hope I've fared better over on the idioms thread :)

Come on, one doesn`t have to know everything, it is impossible today. What really counts is when people want to learn new things and develop their knowledge and brains. The motto of my old school was Semper in Altum - Always Higher. We laughed at it and sneered at our teachers who tried to get it across to us, but it seems I involuntarily adopted it and use in my life and work too. I am always happy when I meet similar people in life - soulmates. :):)

What is the function/aim/purpose of this object?

It is, or was, a restaurant. A pizzeria ship to be precise at Lake Solina. I have only seen one pic of it taken years ago. It appears that the ' Pizzeria ' lettering, which was above the guy's head in the pic, has disappeared now though, so I'm wondering if it still functions as a restaurant. BTW, is this pic linked to the earlier one in number 2840?
