From the In Your Pocket ("Is that a guidebook in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" [Apologies to the late Mae West, from She Done Him Wrong, 1933]) city-guide series, along with interesting short articles about people and places: inyourpocket.com/static/downloads.html

Cześć.

Excellent? Hmm, I'd say that a good chunk of them are an example of 'you get what you pay for'. Admittedly, there are worse advertiser-driven publications out there but there are also better sources than IYP.

Axe to grind, Harry? Is there an English language publication in Poland that hasn't turned down your poor writing/sacked you?

None at all. It's just that people need to be aware that in publications where advertisers pay all the bills advertisers have a very big say in what is and is not said in the publication. A great example would be Namaste curry house in Warsaw: it's widely regarded as one of the best in Poland but for years (after the owner of it and the boss of IYP Poland had a disagreement about advertising) the place wasn't even mentioned in InYourPocket. Another example would be Tandoor Palace: it was widely regarded for years as the worst curry in Warsaw but a nice large advert made sure that the review it got was brilliant.

No English language publication in Poland which I have ever offered work to turned me down and the only times I have stopped working for publications are either when the publication closed or hadn't paid me for more than three months without agreement to delay payment.
