As for areas not penetrated by Sunday tourists - there are many of them e.g., each mountain range has routes which only a few should choose.

Obnly three places in the world are called the Land of a Thousand Lakes - Finnland, Minnesota and Mazurian Lakes in Poland.

Of course, I don`t care about the first two. Let`s focus on Polish Lakes.

My parents used to ship me off to summer camps there.
The entire summer depended on the random choice of your paddling/rowing partner.

Like many people attracted to the beauty of the Mazurian lakes.

The Baltic seaside. Not as warm as the waters in Greece, Spain or Italy, but still enough for people not afraid of the cool temperatures.

We haven`t talked about Białowieski National Reserve yet which hosts the primeval forest with the biggest population of European bison.

The forest was declared a hunting reserve in 1541 to protect bison. In 1557, the forest charter was issued, under which a special board was established to examine forest usage. In 1639 King Władysław IV Waza issued the "Białowieża royal forest decree" (Ordynacja Puszczy J.K. Mości leśnictwa Białowieskiego). The document freed all peasants living in the forest in exchange for their service as osocznicy, or royal foresters. They were also freed of taxes in exchange for taking care of the forest. The forest was divided onto 12 triangular areas (straże) with a centre in Białowieża.

European Bison



Bieszczady Mountains - considered the outback of Poland. When tired of being in the fast lane for too long, go to Bieszczady. Spectacular views, pristine nature, unique atmosphere.

Bieszczady is beautiful, but it's being destroyed by tourism. Villages like Wetlina are being turned into "domki" hell, while villages like Wolosate and Ustryki Gorne are being destroyed by ridiculous amounts of development that simply don't belong there. Last time I was there, almost every village was suffering nightly with ridiculously loud music - even after the night silence started.

Then the mountains themselves are being destroyed by too many tourists, especially idiots from the cities who have no idea how to behave in such a place.

I fear the magic will be gone within 10 years if development isn't restricted. Cisna is still one of my favourite villages in Poland, however :)

Well, we went to Bieszczady last year. It was my first time. We stayed in Wetlina. Yes, a lot of tourists but that`s because we went with kids, to the civilised area, sort of. :):):) If I had gone alone, I would have chosen places far off the beaten track. Besides, it was summer. If you go in autumn or winter, I guarantee you won`t have to elbow your way on popular trails.

On one of Bieszczady`s summits:

I was at Lake Solina in 1990. Also a beautiful area. I remember the Skansen in Sanok as well.

If you could live anywhere in Poland where would it be?

I am trying to find somewhere with a lake that actually allows speedboats in the South, which appears to be easier said than done!

But that aside, the pictures on here are amazing, so where would you live and why?

Some tourist places in Bieszczady look like a stupid Disney version of the wild west. Even in early 90' it looked much better - really wild and abandoned. Inhabitated by charcoal burn-workers, lumberers and ramblers.

TheOther was quite close. Czechs intercepted Kotlina Kłodzka by force for a while in 1945.
Poland wanted to exchange it for Zaolzie, but unfortunately was not succeed.

The best would be to live for some time everywhere and move whenever you get bored.

Yes, exactly. Although the truth is that you can grow your own Bison grass. Be careful, though, it spreads worse than standard weeds.

My cousin sent me this, I thought it was pretty funny. He called it "First Pole on the moon". If you've been to any popular Polish beaches lately, you might find it funny too. I remembered it when I saw Pawian's beach shot.

I just came across this documentary and I must say that I find Poland to be a beautiful country.

I had always thought of it as dreary post-Soviet block flats and had no idea how much nature is there.

I think I would like to visit some day and take some pictures of the farmers with the horses and their ancient traditions.
