Is there a lot of racism in Warsaw (Brazilian student's question)

So im a college student from Chicago, and im thinking to go and study abroad and one of my first options is university of Warsaw. one of the reasons i want to go there is because my school offers a good cheap deal to go for one semester. however, im Brazilian. my skin color is brown and i dont know how that is gonna affect me there. does anyone can give me feedback on this? has anyone experienced racism in this university or city? i have heard good a bad things about the city. i have one african friend who went a year ago and he went thru some unconfortable situations. he spoke his native language a couple of time and he would get comments for this. also, is spanish popular in warsaw, or is english more common to hear?

thanks for all the info you can provide.

No Spanish is not popular there. You can usually find someone in a busy place who will speak at least some English but don't count on everyone being able to...even young people often cannot.

On the racism issue...I saw it many times when I was with people who were not white. Poles are 99% white and regardless of what the patriots here will tell you they are a very racist people overall. You should hear the way they talk about blacks, arabs, asians etc behind closed doors. In public at least the older people won't mess with you just maybe stare sometimes and mutter under their breath at worst. The young people will be divided in 4 groups as far as public behavior: 1.Those who think you are cool because you are from exotic South America.....2.Those who act like they don't care and ignore you....3.Those who will be overtly racist and call you names to their friends thinking you cannot understand (and you may not)...4. The chavs who will try to harass you at night when they are drunk and trying to be tough guys.

Good luck.

Spanish? I thought you said you were Brazilian? If so shouldn't you be asking about Portuguese? Either way, in Europe Spanish is pretty much contained to Spain (and Portuguese to Portugal). Most people who study foreign languages take English, German and French...

The racism part - I think you'll find racism everywhere one way or the other. Just be careful, stay around people you know (and if you go to school there you'll know some people before you know it) and don't let rumors and "what ifs" make the decision for you.

As a general rule, in Warsaw there is no discernable overt racism manifested toward any of the inferior minority groups.
God bless!

there is so much interest in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Warsaw at the moment, that it would be very cool to be seen to hang out with a Brazilian guy if you are a Polish hard nut.

i would play up the Brazilian angle as much as possible wearing Brazilian football shirts as much as possible. if you speak Spanish there are a lot of Spanish speakers in Warsaw and they used to throw really good parties.

as for racism, it is quite bad. if you were african, indian or vietnamese you would have a lot to worry about particularly in small towns however the Poles tend to have a good vibe about Brazilians, so you will be OK. call the Brazilian embassy in Warsaw and ask them for their advice

Wait till you do your version of Sto Lat!. Big hit.

If you're here in Warsaw in early September, you can attend the 5th Brazilian Culture Festival.

Only MJ could circulate in Poland safe because he picked a different color.

I just saw this and hope your stay in Poland is going ok, that is if you are there already.
Poland is a racist country and racism is very evident if you leave the safety and comfort of your Uni and close friends.

While the poles are inferior Europeans themselves they do try and discriminate against other ethnicities due to stupidity, their poverty and lack of proper social education.

All countries are racist. Poles are just not as politically correct as other countries with a hard past i.e. Germany.

While the poles are inferior Europeans themselves they do try and discriminate against other ethnicities due to stupidity, their poverty and lack of proper social education.

How are they inferior? They are attractive, well-mannered, civilized and kind people. What makes them inferior? Oh yes, I guess that Chopin, Marie Curie and Copernicus did stuff any human could achieve.

That's a perfect description of the English...

And besides, calling people names is not racist. I can call people a lot of things, but only English think somebody is really worse. And Americans, so I guess it's an Anglophone custom. Must be something to do with getting the Indian money after so many centuries of plagues and poverty.

So if you don't like it, f*** off back to Poland and be bitter there instead.

Well, I don't live in England and chances are I will never. I can't be bothered to waste my time living in a country that is about to surrender to Islam. LOL I am actually happy about the fate England is facing: Being Colonized by the offspring of those they colonized in the past.

Karma is a real b1tch eh?

Ooh, an Argentinian and A Brazilian on the same thread. Let's see how long it will take before a soccer match begins.

By the way, Argentina sucks and if North Korea were to try their atomic bombs, they should use some on that joke named Argentina.

Could be Dutch indeed. We have a lot of stupid ppl in NL. But my best bet would be either an American who doesn't have a clue anyway or still RevokeNice in disguise. Wouldn't be the first time...

Yeah, I already met you and Disco Stu.

But I would rather castrate myself than be a Dutch.

Subpar versions of the Germans lol

Funny you should say that. We've always been richer than the Germans.

>^..^<

M-G (richer than anybody else in Europe, for that matter. Why? Because we are tolerant and tolerance makes rich - sadly not everybody understands that)
