More anti Polish sentiment in western media ("Apple is worth more than Poland")

You mean an American who watches tv and SNL and doesn't see the BS your spewing. SNL is a satire. It is not the news or "real" media. It is designed to make light of everything and has done so throughout its existance. It in no way targets Polish or Slavs directly... it makes fun of everyone and anything that is current news.

Have you ever seen the show "Jersey Shore" which is by far more detrimental to Italians than anything you have portrayed so far.And that is supposed to be a reality show not a satire like SNL.

Polish jokes are not popular anymore. I never hear anything about other Slavs in the media.

A Satirist basically uses negative humor or ridicule in a constructive criticism kind of way. For example satire is commonly used to target corrupt politicians to point out their wrongs so that hopefully they don't repeat their wrongs.

Tell me? What did the Polish pilot or Polish people in general do WRONG when the Polish pilot heroically saved hundreds of lives, that this "Satirist" Seth Meyers was mocking? Satire is used to mock things that are wrong in order to change them.

No Seth Meyers thought it was WRONG that the rest of the fair minded media was putting out a story that was POSITIVE about Poland and Polish people because Seth Meyers is an anti-Polish Bigot.

Could you imagine if somebody non-Jewish (especially Polish) used satire to mock Seth Meyers and his Jewish ancestry for things that they think he has done wrong?

The Arab media uses satire and jokes all the time directed at Jews and Israel, which Jews absolutely do not dismiss as being "satire" or just "jokes",

The Nazis also used satire and jokes directed at Jewish people. In fact Seth Meyers uses the same kind of anti-Polish jokes that the Nazis used against Polish people. But I can at least understand the Nazis degrading Polish people since they were at war with Poland.


Sure I can forgive a comedian for some ethnic insult jokes against Polish people or anybody else for that matter....if it was a mistake. I get it. Everyone makes mistakes. I do believe people should be forgiven for mistakes. I don't believe in "Never forgive and Never forget".

But if somebody makes some jokes that mocks Jews.......you have no problem forgiving them? If somebody thinks jokes about the appearance of Jews is funny......you have no problem forgiving them? Or if somebody uses satire jokes about Jews looking and acting like rats directed at corrupt Jews like Bernie Madoff.....you have no problem with that?

As for Seth Meyers and NBC-TV, when these anti-Polish hate jokes are part of a PATTERN from a Network like NBC-TV that has been doing it for DECADES......then I know the people at NBC-TV did NOT do it mistakenly and its part of a systematic malicious hate campaign against the Polish people, as the Polish American Guardian Society and other Polish American groups have pointed out.

Also why is it that people that are so thin skin about perceived "anti-semitic" comments are so quick to tell Polish people that they are "thin skinned" about Anti-Polish slurs?

The most insulting show of all time was All In The Family. Did that premiere on NBC?

That character was an insult to Russians imo. But then again there was an ugly American political prick in it as well with the last name Anheuser. That could be taken as a slur against beer.

No that was cbs and was the show that I was going to show mocked everyone including the Jews. In fact if you watched the show although the acter who was Polish was often called Meathead by Archie, he often was portrayed in a positive light and Archie was often the butt of the jokes .

Some people might object to the way the Polish character was portrayed. Due to the fact one of the main characters was Polish, Polish slurs outnumbered most others. The only rival was Edith, but she was mocked due to gender, not ethnicity.

I will agree with the Polish slurs, the show was full of slurs of every ethnic origin. My point was Mike the Polish character was portrayed as a loving husband to Archie's daughter and it was Archie that looked like the bigoted jerk for making fun of him all the time.


I really did enjoy the show though, and in fact I credit this show for some of the reduction of racial slurs in America today. The show was so over the top it was entertaining.

CBS started "All in the Family" when it saw how NBC-TV was going crazy making various shows pushing ethnic insults, mostly at Poles.

Yes Archie mocked many ethnic groups, but some groups were mocked more frequently and worse then others.

The Polish people were mocked the most as far as actual number of ethnic insult sound bites if you added them up. Also the only Nazi stereotype used in the show was the Nazi one about Polish people. Archie never used Nazi stereotypes about Jews. Did he ever call Jews "K-kes"? He used the word Hebe which is not as bad as "K-ke" and many of his remarks about Jews were MILD. Correct me if I'm wrong but he never portrayed the Jews as people who "look and act like RATS". That's how the Nazis joked about the Jews. The Nazis joked about how the Polish people have inferior intelligence which was always on the tip of Archie's tongue.

Archie joked about how Jews are "cheap and stingy". WOW!!! Well Wooptee doo!! How degrading!!!! LOL Its almost a complement since it shows Jews are good at budgeting their money.

Archie joked about how the Germans "like to March". WOW!!! Well Wooptee doo!! How degrading!!!! LOL Its not like Archie made Lampshade jokes about the Germans.

With the exception of a couple shows where Mike had some good come back answers to Archie and his Polish family was portrayed in a positive light (token shows) half of the time Mike was portrayed as a bafoon and slob who was deserving of Archie's anti-Polish insults. Like when Mike had cereal coming out of his mouth, or how Mike didn't have a job and was leaching off of Archie. The TV viewer was prompted to agree with most of Archie's anti-Polish slurs.

If the purpose of the show was to show Archie's bigotry was wrong, the producer of the show did a bad job of it. As the Anti-Defamation League said, the Archie Bunker character GLORIFIED Archie Bunker's bigotry. Norman Lear know his talk of "making fun of bigotry" is a ruse. Everyone knows that.

Archie bunker was called "the loveable bigot" by other elements of the American media and the American people themselves!! How can that be? Isn't that an oxymoron??

I and many other Polish Americans used to hear people who just watched "All in the Family" say things like "I AM SO GLAD THAT ARCHIE GAVE IT TO THAT DUMB MEATHEAD POLACK!!!" They were SIDING WITH ARCHIE BUNKER against the Polish people!!!

I used to remember thinking to myself.......My God its just a MADE UP SHOW. This Archie Bunker guy is FICTIONAL. But through the TREMENDOUS POWER OF TV MEDIA on the human brain......these people actually felt like Archie Bunker and the "Meathead Dumb Polack" were REAL!!!!

I have never heard anyone say anything bad about the "All in the Family" show. The show was designed by Norman Lear to be LAPPED UP by the American people and to INSERT bigotry into American culture especially anti-Polish bigotry. Norman Lear was even reported to make anti-Polish slurs after the show was broadcasted. His Archie Bunker character reflected his own anti-Polish Bigotry.

If SNL can ridicule the Poles in the same way the Nazis did, certainly they can also ridicule the Jews the way the Nazis did.

For sure. Michael was portrayed as the unkempt, lazy student emasculated by his wife, constantly berated by his father inlaw. He had some good spots when he pointed out what a doofus Archie was being. He had a strong social justice streak but other times he was cavemannish.

I think you described the portrayal of the Polish character "Michael Stivic" of "All in the Family" perfectly.

Although he had some redeeming qualities, in that he seemed to have a good heart.......he was mostly the object of ridicule, a bafoon and half the time he appeared cavemannish.

All I'm hearing is, "Seth Meyers made a Polish joke and I didn't find it funny". Okay. AND? If you want to cite a more credible example of a defamatory characterization of Polish-Americans (which is basically the root of your ire), I'd point you towards one Stanley Kowalski, as portrayed by Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire. He's violent, abusive, and poorl. Vivien Leigh spends the entire film calling him an "a dumb Polack". There. I've made your critique of American popular culture, vis-a-vis Poland, somewhat more credible, and academically sound. You're welcome.

Did you even watch the show? Yes Archie berated Mike almost every show but every show but not becuse he was Polish it was because of the times and the hippie movement which is what his character was portrayed to be. Hippies were often portrayed as unkept and lazy. They were against corporate America and following the herd. Which is what Archie's character was supposed to portray but every program Archie is the one looking like a fool because of his bigoted ways and old school mentality. Mike was a non conformist but also just. He is often portrayed as a conflicted man...on one end he is pro women's right but he is also masciline and proud of it. I am confused how you only see the bad in his character and automatically assume that is because he was Polish???

Of course the Anti Defamation League would say that against the show it is thier montra. Apparently everyone doesn't know that because my take as a American is quite different. I found it entertaining and saw the show as a turning point in Americas prejudice and lead to shows like the Jeffersons and later the Cosby Show. Which are also filled with racism but showed how the other side sees the world. These shows opened the eyes of America to how the other half lived and felt also in a comedy format.


But represented the blue collar worker at the time. The show marked a passsage of time...from and old way of thinking to a new. It had 2 extreme ways of thinking in it. The old school waspy view of the world and the hippie view of the world constantly colliding and finding out that neither was perfect and often had to compromise.

Poland in foreign media and blogs thread

Thought I would start a thread with thought provoking perspectives from the world media and think tanks. I found this article by Dov S. Zakheim, quite balanced and educational, from a conservative american jewish perspective. Quite like how he details historical facts detailing that the history of jews in Poland is neither black and white, but like humanity and multitude of greys, shamefull and heroic acts. Both sides have grieviences but for the sake of the future and our common bond we must look to the future. It made a change from the polarising commentry in haeretz and jerusalem post. regarding this issue.

Poland gets little mention in the foreign media. When it does it is unbalanced and mostly negative.

Same with blogs. There most of it are foreigners looking for Polish women or jobs and then getting mad when they fail at both.
