Take care. I've just watched the news and last night three people died of cold in their own flats, 11 outside. This is no joke and next night is supposed to be as cold.

No surprise. How most of the apartments are built in poland, really I'm not surprised at all

last night three people died of cold in their own flats,

Don,t worry about me....i know how to keep warm in freezing weather....I used to teach survival , so it would be very embarrasing if i froze to death in my house....

I suspect the ones that died were old people that didn,t eat enough , and did not take precautions to keep up their body tempreture....

.I used to teach survival

That's interesting, if it doesn't go against your secret service training, could you tell us about keeping warm in this, the dos and don'ts?

And if the answer is beans, I will be forced to verbally trash you.

And if the answer is beans,

Well . i shall try to avoid the fact that beans will save you from any fate , be it cold weather or nuclear war....lets consider other factors...

I won,t go into all the things that you can do to make a house warm , i will just spout about how to keep the body warm in a cold house , or outdoors...

To survive the human body needs to maintain its core tempreture at normal body tempreture , your core is the bit that contains all your vital organs , and suprisingly only a few degrees up or down can cause major problems , even death...

When your body finds itself in extreme cold it goes into survival mode , as your body tempreture starts to drop the first thing it does is shut off most of the blood to your hands and feet in order to keep this warm blood in your core , thats why your hands and feet start to feel the cold first....the body is attempting to sacrifice the bits that are not essential for life , in order to preserve life itself...People who have been stuck in extreme cold often survive , but lose hands , feet , even legs to frostbite...

If its so cold that your body is struggling to maintain your core tempreture , one of the first signs is mental confusion , people may appear to be drunk , or simpy tired , if you are in a group you must look out for these signs among your friends , if you are alone , then you are already in big trouble , as the confusion may mean you fail to take the steps needed to save your life , quite often people will do things like discard spare warm clothing , and even remove some of the clothes they are wearing... If you are shivering , this is your bodies attempt to make your body move enough to get some heat going , when you stop shivering you are in trouble...you will become tired , your pulse will slow , you will lie down and go into deep sleep...you won,t wake up....!

In order to avoid death its best not to let yourself get that cold...if you must go out in such low tempretures the answer is layers of warm clothes that can be removed , or put back on to keep your body at a comfortable tempreture...we will devide it into three layers...the base layer , the warm layer , and the outer layer...

BASE LAYER...nylon or polypropylene tee shirts and long johns , there are a few good makers of themal clothes for this purpose...

WARM LAYER... lumberjack type shirt , with a good fleece over the top , on your bottom half , polycotton or fleece trousers . or any good military trousers , forget jeans , they are useless when wet , and are no good at retaining heat...

OUTER LAYER...this is where it gets a bit expensive if you want to be warm...Ideally you need something thats going to let the sweat escape , but keep the wind and rain out , and such stuff does not come cheap....Its easy enough to get a jacket and trousers that are waterproof and windproof , any plastic clothes will do that , but you will sweat inside them , and sweat reduces your body tempreture , thats what its there for , but its not what you want on a very cold day....My advice is to go to a good camping shop and buy the very best you can afford , it might save your life some time...

Make sure you are well fed before going out , and if you are going a bit out in the wilds you should have the means to survive a few hours out there if you say fell and broke a leg...you should not have to wait for too long of course...oh , hang on , you did tell somebody where you were going didn,t you , what route you were taking , and what time you expect to be back...? You didn,t , oh dear...do you know how to dig a snow hole....?

So how's your Internet connection within the snowhole? Will we be getting Survival 101 Part Two?

I can't imagine Kraków being worse than here. I only have 7 mins to walk to work but I almost froze after just 3 or 4 mins. I had my scarf, beanie and gloves but still felt the chill. Sasha's suggestion of growing a beard may not be a bad one as my chin felt numb. My nose was the worst. The temperature must be low as I usually don't feel the cold that badly, being from the NE of Scotland where the wind chill is pretty nasty. After footie, I just wear a jumper when everyone else is dressed in heavy jackets. I'll have to give myself a good shake to warm up my muscles, that helps. At a conservative estimate, it felt like -20 whilst walking to work.

I don't cope. I freeze. This morning I went to finish the painting of my new office. It was OK doing the job as the radiator works. But going from my home to my office was awful. I'm not used to such temperatures. I have the impression that everything (not just me) is functioning slower... ;-)

Well, mother of nature probably will have a mercy around Friday, it will be around -1 to -5 :-) As for wildrover tips, I'm not survival teacher, but don't forget about warm hood or hat big enough to cover your ears. Or both :-) Supposedly, human loses about 40% of heat through the head.

PS. for those hopeless cases who freezes even in +10, and has to/want to spend few hours outside, then they are small chemical heaters, which can be put inside of the shoes or gloves. My fiance is using that staff when skiing. It works just fine and isn't excessively expensive (around 10 zł if I remember correctly). It can be obtained in all those sports shops like intersport, hi-mountain, skalnik, horyzont, etc. and via internet

Can you walk on the sea? My first year in Poland it was so cold (as low -35) for so long (didn't go above freezing in November, December, January or February) that the sea froze and you could walk about a kilometre out on it at Ustka.

Can you walk on the sea?

I don't even know if the sea's frozen. Last couple of days I'm not even sticking
my nose out of the heated buildings (the only problem is that I have drive to work
every morning :-/)

Supposedly, human loses about 40% of heat through the head.

This advice originated from a US army survival manual from the 1970,s , and has recently been proved to be a bit of a myth...You will lose some heat through your head , but nothing like 40%....If wearing a hat makes you feel warmer then its a good idea....Personally i wear i Russian army Ushanka , this is one of those hats you can pull the flaps down to keep your ears warm , great for these Siberian conditions..

-10 in Wrocław? Well, it most certainly was around -15 at 7.30am today. It was perishing without exaggeration. I felt like making my scarf into sth resembling a niqab. It was like ice was permanently on my skin and my muscles hadn't warmed up.

I just bought my uncle one of those, everyone laughed at first but he swears by it now. Can even buy them in Topshop and Next :)

Mine is one of the regular types worn by normal soldiers , made of some kind of synthetic material , but my Russian lady is going to send me one of the officers hats , made from real fur...It would not be politically correct in the UK of course to wear real fur , but we ain,t in the UK....and its dam cold...!

I've usually wear a shemagh and look very hezbollah like during the winter...

I'm sure they'll be looking for new recruits here :) Just shout Allahu Akbar in the streets and then you're sure to get a reaction :) Be careful not to get arrested. France is thinking about banning burkas and niqabs. Poland doesn't need to take a stand given the limited number of Muslims here.

You must have confused me with someone else, TM. I spent most of my life
in Słupsk/Ustka. I'm sure Wrocław is a great city but my home has always
been Pomerania...

Żadna siła, żadna burza,
nie odbierze Słupska nam.
Nasza flota, choć nieduża,
wiernie strzeże portu bram.

Anybody know where the coldest place was this winter , which part of Polska , and what was the tempreture...?

Ewa’s/Asia’s/Aga’s/Alina’s * heart (about -87 Centigrade)

* delete or substitute as appropriate.

As an aside I thought it was an English thing to go on and on about the weather but the Polish are good at it too. Given that both nations also appear to be world class whingers I am now going to elaborate on my theory that the Normans invaded Poland in 1067 thus proving that the two nations are deeply intertwined. A potentially controversial line of thought … but no more so that the Bishop quoted on here today.

I personally blame the Russians

My Russian lady has denied that her country has anything to do with the cold weather , and insists its the Americans who are to blame...She just phoned me to say its minus 35 right now in Moscow...She is going home via the metro rather than the bus , as its much warmer underground....

Good man, Wildrover! I hope you plan to stay here permanently - we need
all the good people here to keep up with those thrifty Posnanians and arrogant
Varsovians. Go Pomerania! :-)
