According to The Concise Dictionary of Twenty-Six Languages, the Polish word for accept is przyjmować, but according to google translate, the word is akceptować. What word should I use when I agree to accept someone as a friend on Facebook? Which word is appropriate?

Definetely "akceptować". You can for example "przyjąć gościa" (to accomodate the guests), also you can "przyjąć zaproszenie (od kogoś)" (to accept the invite from someone... on facebook). But there more correct form is "akceptować".

But is przyjmować an informal expression of accept? I don't understand why dictionaries prefer przyjmować over akceptować, if that word is more formal than the former.

Neither is more or less formal. It all depends what you trying to say.Sometimes you can use either and sometimes not.

The meaning is slightly different. Also check out uznać, again different.

It all depends what you want to say.
