What are good topics of conversation if we are practicing conversation over the internet?

For example two people on skype from different countries, different ages and nothing in common?
She is about 50 and I am a good bit younger.

You have to find commonalities and it's as simple as that. Age alone says almost nothing sometimes, personality goes much much further.

Find out her interests. People love to talk about themselves and what they like. Reminds me of a student who taught flying. Once I got him onto that subject I just sat back and let him do the talking. Later you can give feedback, pointers, etc.
