Distinguishing between boy/boyfriend/......girl/girlfriend in polish

In English we have boyfriend and girlfriend which would of course mean you are in a relationship with these people.

If they were not your b/f or g/f then it would just be friend.

But in Polish it is the same word for both, i think : dziewczyna/chlopak.

Girlfriend/girl and boyfriend/boy

Isnt this awkward?

cheers

Depends on what you mean by "relationship".
Girlfriend may refer to a romantic or non-intimate relationship. Hence, you could have a girlfriend and that would not automatically imply that you are a lesbian.

The same with boyfriend. The relationship does not always mean that the relationship is of romantic or sexual nature.

I must therefore assume, standard Polish "przyjaciel" (m) / "przyjaciółka" (f) mean solely "male friend" and "female friend" only in the most Platonic sense of the word.

Lyzko you're right. A female friend is kolezanka or przyjaciolka. Girlfriend is dziewcyna or moja dziewczyna. So says moja dziewczyna!

I always thought that

znajom / a = friend, aquaintence
Koleżanka = girlfriend ( romantic interest )
przyjaciol /ka = VERY good friend sometimes known a finace / e

Moj po Polsku jest słaby............so I could be wrong

Koleżanka = girlfriend ( romantic interest )

No. Koleżanka is a female colleague, or a female (not very close) friend. It never corresponds to the English word girlfriend (sth romantic).

przyjaciol /ka = VERY good friend sometimes known a finace / e

Yes, it refers to really close friends. Your few best friends.

It looks like it's not yours either.
Main Entry: boy·friend

Function: noun
Date: 1845

1 : a male friend
2 : a frequent or regular male companion in a romantic or sexual relationship

no 2 guys would ever say this is my boyfriend or even this is my boy friend

and you know all guys?
Even gay ones?

znajom / a = frżiend, aquaintence

Znajomy, znajoma = acquaintance

Koleżanka = girlfriend ( romantic interest )

Koleżanka = female colleague

przyjaciol /ka = VERY good friend sometimes known a finace / e

Przyjaciółka = friend (female), could be also a girlfriend, especially if is preceded by my
Narzeczona = fiancée (female)

Moja przyjaciolka means my closest friend. Nothing romantic involved.
However, moj przyjaciel..hmmm ...there might be more.
Kolega - just man-friend, a buddy.
Kolezanka - just a female friend.

Collins Paperback English Dictionary :

Boyfriend : a male friend with WHOM a person is romantically or sexually involved.
(not just a friend)

Males dont refer to their male friends as boyfriends (obviously the exception is gay males, but you know i was not talking about that)

Or even boy friend

Girls, especially, younger girls may refer to one of their friends as a girl friend ( 2 separate words) Unless of course they are gay also.

So i think im none the wiser with my polish unless i say "my" first :))
