Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people?

This is a test. I would like to know how many Poles are offended by this Joke. I realize that it is English language centric. I am not sure how many native Polish speakers would get why it is funny.

Q: Why do most Poles have 'ski' at the end of their name?
A: Because they cant' spell 'toboggan'!

The title of this thread is just another in a long string of generalizations in these forums that are made that have insufficient evidence of validity. In my personal experience (I am 50 years old), I have very rarely met anyone who has displayed or expressed a hatred for Poles. My last recollection is childhood school mates. Most of them probably got it from their parents but they seemed to grow out of it. Maybe I have lived a sheltered life.

But the question of why anyone would hate a particular group of people is an interesting one. Motives are not easy to identify. It is not always because they feel the other group has taken something from them or wronged them in some way. I believe that sometimes it may be a way to make themselves feel like they are superior in some way. The next question would be therefore why they have feelings of inadequacy. Now you are getting into a full college course in psychology.

Why Poles would be selling anything in English, their native langude is Polish, in Polish toboggan is gibberish. It is funny cause it is stupid like most jokes. The qestion is why would Poles be spelling English words? Can you read

the End

in Chinese? No ? hah-aha?
I guess that joke says more about jokers than Poles,

I am not sure where you got anything about selling anything in that post.

The joke is that it is not really a 'Polish' joke. It is an American (maybe Canadian or UK also?) joke that merely uses a coincidence in language (look up the term 'false friends' as it relates to language study). If you get the joke immediately, it is funny. If you have to take time to think about it, it's not. The funny part is that it is ostensibly a joke about dumb pollacks that can't spell but most Americans would have trouble spelling 'toboggan', irrespective of their background.

I think most jokes are funny when the punch line is unexpected but immediately understandable. Most Americans with a last name ending in 'ski' but do not speak Polish, that I try this joke on, think that it is hilarious. Anyone that I have tried it on who is a native Polish speaker, even if their English in very good, just look at me like I am a nut.

you think and write like a child and yet you believe you can criticize us.

Btw. no one, other than a few (maybe), hates Poles in America. Talk about something you actually know what you're talking about ....
.....I basically told you to shut up.

Spelling dear Madame spelling.

think most jokes are funny when the punch line is unexpected but immediately understandable.

I have specific sense of humor, most thing that people find funny I find not funny at all or mildly amusing. I laugh at things most people do not find funny.

The joke is that it is not really a 'Polish' joke.

I think it is totally immaterial and boring.

Most Americans with a last name ending in 'ski' but do not speak Polish.

I doubt that but if you are right I would say that is more about acculturation not about the language.

I knew 'spelling' is what was meant' It was a joke.

Why are you calling me 'Madame'? Is that a joke also? I would much prefer 'Sir'.

As a Canadian guy married to a Polish gal I can honestly say I don't dislike the majority of Poles. Met a few that left a lot to be desired, but the majority seem to be ok to me.

As has been said before, every ethnic group/nationality/race has its share of idiots and geniuses and the full range of normal distribution in intelligence. You just can't reliably make generalizations such as all 'x' hates 'y'. For example, why do you think that redneck jokes seem to be so universal. That type of person shows up everywhere as a small percentage of every population. I know there are idiots all over the world after watching 'Worlds Wildest Police Chases' on SpikeTV.

Not exactly, environment plays a significant part.

I live in a very polish area here in NYC.........i'll tell you what I've learned over the past several years regarding polish people. they are far more racist than any of the people who may make fun of them. they tend to only take care or themselves. they are RUDE, quite ignorant much of the time as well, they are one of the few cultures who refuse to think they should learn to speak and spell the native language of the nation they want to live in. many, and I say again, Many enter the united states and stay here on an illeagle level, they love to work off the books and not pay any taxes, yet take full advantage of benefits that may help them when they can. no one but them selves would miss them if they all disappeared.

Have you been to Poland? The ones you see in NYC are just a minority. They don't reflect the majority. And just like how they want to be treated well in NYC, their people also treat people well in Poland.

Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people?

because they are indoctrinated since their birth to hate everything Slavic. They think that they must, that they have right. They trust only in power and their self-given right to control, grab and rule.

Since I live in Canada, and I am Polish myself I will tell you something about Toronto, it is full of immigrants from all over the world. Polish people that refuse to assimilate are disliked by the so called "Canadians" but since Toronto has a very diverse population, you don't have to assimilate because almost nobody does that. remember that Canada is a very artificial country.

They think that they must, that they have right.

yes, they think they have the right to destroy culture, but it will never happen if we keep reminding people about their culture and ethnic heritage.

indoctrinated since their birth to hate everything Slavic

If they are Slavic, they can resist this brainwashing but it can be a slow process.

their self-given right to control, grab and rule.

If they did not, There would be no such thing as America, Canada, Australia etc.

Polish people come to America ands Canada and don't bother to learn the english language, they don't obey the laws, many don't pay taxes because they get paid cash by some other illegal Pole, they come and overstay their visas, many steal, cheat and lie. I'm not surprised the Poles have given themselves this opinion, they think since they are poor, America and Canada owes them everything. They don't even like our country, they live in America but speak Polish, listen to Polish radio, Polish TV, they cook Polish food, etc. This itself sets them apart and makes them the .laugh of the town. Thye thuink they are better and smarter then everyone else and they just want to rule and have things their way. Poles laugh at us, complain how we do things here, etc, so why don't they go back to their hometown, where they belong. This is America and we do things our way, not the Polish way. They are just so annoying.

they are far more racist than any of the people who may make fun of them.

Yes, that is so true. I've heard Polish people speak Polish in America about how someone looks different, that they're fat, ugly, black, chinese. They even have unpleasant nicknames for them. But they speak Polsih and chances are they don't understand.

But they speak Polsih

which is acceptable, there are people who are americans and dont speak a word of english, plenty of italians,Indians,Polish, spanish, chinese etc.But calling others names is unacceptable.

.

paid cash by some other illegal Pole

All nationalities do that...I know portugese, italians, indians, spanish,Irish,Brits and all communities do that.Honestly with my experience even tax departtment overlooks it(not legally) till the taxes are paid on someones name or they want to fry someone eg: Al Caponne.

quote=tygrys]This is America and we do things our way, not the Polish way[/quote]
Agreed 100%...if you dont like it GTF out.

Many enter the united states and stay here on an illeagle level....

it seems as though the US government feel the same, and are aware of this information. hence, why poles still stand in line in the cold at the embassy (hoping for a visa). it was unbelievable to me how many poles I met in poland that would tell me about their uncle or friend or cousin that went to the USA and never came back....and then they'd snicker about how they are there illegally. it was as though every pole i met knew of another pole that left for the USA and stayed illegally.

Poland lost millions of its citizens to the UK alone when the borders opened up, and that's with very little refuge or social support upon arrival. And, when you consider the fact that in a country made up of 40 million, with many of that number either too old to work or too young to work, disabled, sick, etc., even half a million of your able bodied population is devastating to a country's economy. Poland educates its people with tax dollars, and then those people get the hell on somewhere else that pays better and offers a better quality of life. it's bad financial planning to say the least.

consider the huge polish neighborhoods in the USA, neighborhoods that have been in existence for many decades, well rooted into society. polish doctors, polish lawyers, polish supermarkets, polish employers, polish politicians, polish labor unions, polish contractors....and of course, their own families and friends that already live there. it is NOTHING for a pole to move to the USA and set up shop, all without knowing a lick of english. something to consider if the USA opened up the borders for Poles.

because they are indoctrinated since their birth to hate everything Slavic.

uhhmm....in the case of the USA, no. that would be a false statement. i've never even been to Canada so I can't comment regarding Canada.

fUZZYWICKETS you are a prime example of someone who hates Poland and Polish people and keeps spreading lies and hatred on and on... Poles do this Poles do that. 99% of the time stuff you are talking about is absolute BS and discussion with you is pointless. I think it is worth to acknowledge who you really are before some comments on your post. don't know if racism can be cured but I hope so...

Maybe 20 years ago, not now. With low value of USD, lots areas with crappy boarded houses, unemployment - USA is no paradise any more. Maybe that is what is painful for american? They can't feel superior any more.

Excluding places like Washington, New York.... property prices in USA are not different that in Poland. It is so easier to emigrate to any Eu country now _ and always easier to come back.

What would attract average polish person to emigrate to USA now ?????

I think that is

this is why whatever you think about "here vs there" is completely wrong. have you ever lived in the USA? comparing property prices in the USA vs. Poland is just absurd.

low value of USD? you mean 3 times the value of the zloty? unemployment? it's LOWER in the USA than in Poland. considerably less, actually. boarded houses? where, frickin' Detroit?! get outta town, man.

What you keep forgetting is that dollar is 3 zł, euro 4 and pound 5. And you can hitchhike home from EU. On the other hand people think why would I humiliate myself in ISA embassy if I can go somewhere else and spend my money there.

Guys please don't feed the troll, I know he is annoying but let him live in his bubble, where he can feel superior to other people based on the fact that they are born in different country (maybe being USA citizen is his biggest life achievement). Imagine what a low-life you have to be to systematically come to this forum to bash Poland just so he can boost his ego.

I have family ( they are legally) there and paradise it is not.All taxes, paid healthcare...

Why anyone would go to USA if they can go to any European country now?

I was on holiday in USA and I wouldn't like to live there.

Is comparing property prices absurd?- it is very normal procedure.Have you ever read any financial paper ?

I have, but I'll do you one better. I've lived in Poland for years, and have lived, and now live, in the USA. I also own property here. I know a thing or two about what costs what. Where are you getting your data from?

European immigration to USA has all but stopped since the 1990's. If you are uneducated, it's still a great place to make money and return home.

If Americans were able to learn a 2nd language, you would see mass exodus back to Europe
