Is tallness common among Polish people?

There is no parts of Poland where the people are either short or tall. I am 100% Polish and i'm 5'7" and my uncles (who come from short parents) are almost 6'0" its genetics not cultural or regional and I must agree that these kinds of question DO create some sort of material people can use to discredit Polish people hence stereotypes.

In my experiences, I notice people of Polish ancestry are above average in height.

I am above average in height and so is most of my family.

If you look at the female professional tennis players of Polish ancestry, most of them are tall.

In professional boxing you have several tall Polish guys.

In NFL football there is usually a Polish American player on a given team who is tall/big.

All the Poles I have met are quite short. None have been near the 198cm I consider to be normal.

Urszula is five ten, although that might have something to do with her being German-born.

177 cm woman is not an exceptionally tall woman - actually I only find women who are taller than me tall (I'm 182 cm - I don't even struggle to put that in in/ft)

Harry she was just born there, that's all, born to Polish parents. If she was born in Germany to German or mixed marriage it would be different. Although she could pass for a German...

She most certainly could. Are we completely sure that both her parents are Polish? She doesn't look much like her sister and is a couple of inches taller too.

Do you find that German women are more likely to be tall than Polish women or vice versa?

Harry she is realy quite similar to her sister from the facial features (you just don't have an eye for that ;)

Not really. Compare this to the photo above:

But to get back on the topic, is, in your experience, tallness more common in Poles than their western neighbours?

Harry I am 5 inches taller than my twin brother and don't look like him. I'm 6'6 he's 6'1, we can't be Polish cause we're tall?? Actually apart from the obvious weight difference, her and her sister look slightly alike, the cheeks, mouth. They're all tall in that so called 'Polish group' of female tennis players.

the thing is younger generations are much taller now - my brother is taller than me and so is every male relative younger than me (but my male family from my mum's side were all tall) - it's the same for the girls (save for that that they are not typically taller than myself fortunately) - i.e. younger generations are way taller - I think it has to lot to do with the ways farm animals are fed these days (some sneaky hormones in fodder??)

Yes, tallness is common in Poland. However, shortness can be seen as common too. The problem with reading most average height statistics is that they are distorted when a population tends to have a noticeable difference between lots of "short" and "tall" people, with few "medium" people i.e the average may be 5'10" but you will hardly ever see a 5'10" individual but will see many 5'6" and 6'2" people. My mother's side, city folks from Krakow, is short, between 5'1" and 5'6". My father's side, farmers from the Galician part of Poland, are well over 6' with my dad being in the short half of his brothers at 6'3". I think these differences are from Poland being a crossroads to many other nationalities over the centuries as well as just the opposite - rather closed areas of location and vocation, say hill people versus the plains and city tradesmen versus county laborers.

I know this is an ancient thread, but nearly every Polish-American person I know is tiny. My Grandma (from somewhere around Rybnik) once said, verbatim, "Not all of us are short! One of my brothers was 5'6". My great-grandparents were both 5'1", my mom was "the tall one" among her cousins at 5'4", and all the Polish guys I went to high school with were never taller than 5'8". The family that runs the Polish deli I always go to are probably around 5'6" and 4'11". I'm 6'1", but all the guys on my dad's side are between 6'3" and 6'11" so next to them I'm still short!
