Gorzelnik and/or Podgorczyk - trying to find region or town from where my grandparents were born. Can anyone help?
Josef Gorzelnik had brother in Poland who did not migrate to USA. Josef came to USA in 1913. From USA immigration report, Josef was from Wiczravice, Galicia.

Apolonia Podgorczyk came to USA between 1913 and 1916.

Josef was from Wiczravice, Galicia.

There is no such place however there is a place called Wierzawice
Apolonia came in 1914 but can't read the place on the ship's manifest. A lot of the records are inaccurate in spelling partly due to the handwriting on the ship's manifest.

For what it's worth, Gorzelnik is a distiller (moonshiner) and Podgórcyzk was someone living in a piedmont area (in the foothills).

Presumed etymology:
Gorzelnik - occupational nick = man who owns or operates a still
Podgórczyk - patronymic nick = son of Podgóny (the man who lives at the foot of the hill)

I checked the surname database at Polish Origin - your names have not yet been added by anyone else.

Good Luck with your research!

Hi,
my father Marian Gorzelnik was born in Wierzawice and used to live there,
I believe I still have some aunts living there as well, but I lost touch with them
ever since I moved to the States

Thanks, George.
Is there any way to get in contact with them or their children?
I'll follow up, then, and see if they are related to my grandfather.
