Does anyone know where this can be found in Poland, and what it is called in Polish please?

There's something called "sos tatarski" (dressing for salads etc.), but I'm not sure if that's what you need (the product names seem to match, but it may be something completely different).

What do you need it for ... would baking powder/baking soda not do the job ?? or lemon juice/vinegar as a substitute for it if mixing egg whites ?

I am sorry, you are wrong. It is called kamień winny (byproduct of wine making) in Polish. Difficult to get in Poland and if I were you I would have it shipped from abroad.

What are you baking?

I see.
Here's an older thread about the same thing, but it seems it's hard to find in Poland.

And here are two other threads about possible substitutes (I'm not sure you can use them in your recipe)

Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)

Baking soda and baking powder

Cream of Tartar is used for dishes such as meringues. It helps to stabalize the egg whites. It has nothing to do with salads. You may be thinking instead of tartar sauce which is used as a condiment with fish.

The person above who said something about substituting lemon juice or vinegar is on the right track. For 1.25 ml of cream of tartar use 2.5 ml of vinegar or lemon juice. Vinegar, particularly may change the flavor of the food. With lemon juice perhaps a bit of sugar will help.

Thanks for your replies guys, thread got buried I think. I am making various baked goods and one recipe for crumpets (this being Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's) mentioned cream of tartar. Not Tartare Sauce guys, lol, that would make pretty disgusting crumpets!

Ah well someone will bring me some back I'm sure, or bring it when they come see me. :)
