20 years old moving to Poland from Canada, is it hard for me to get a job in Poland?

I am 20 years old and my dream has always been to move to Poland. My whole family is from Poland so I can speak polish and read but I cannot write. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The only thing that is holding me back is I am scared I wont be able to find a job. I heard about teaching english but all the websites that I have been on say that you need a bachelor degree plus TEFL/ESL certificate, I could get a certificate.

I guess my question is, will it be extremely hard for me to get a job is poland? What could I do?

Yes - it will be difficult. You'll be seen as a student, not as someone serious - and because of that, most jobs won't be open to you.

Get the degree, then think about moving - you can use the time to learn how to write in Polish too, which will help you immensely.

And get a Polish passport too.

And for god's sake do not get five day TEFL certificate! You will need a CELTA or a Trinity Cert TESOL: nothing else is worth the paper it is printed on.

There are several threads here where you could practice your written Polish. You say you can't write in Polish but I bet you know more than you think. You do realize English and Polish use the same alphabet, right? It's not Chinese or Japanese with a different alphabet altogether.

You can write in Pinglish on those threads and they'll correct you fast enough, trust me on that one... ;)

The days of getting a job just because you spoke English are done. You need to have an education or a skill. Ask yourself- do you want to live in Poland and be poor? you don't because it is a drag.

Do yourself a favour and get an education in Canada first- then come to Poland.
Get out of Winnipeg if you have to. Try Calgary, Vancouver- even Ottawa- all great cities with great schools. Once you have an education- then make the move.

Some professions to consider- that would do well here. A chef trained abroad, a sommelier, interior designer, commercial real estate agent (the residential system is a joke here) and of course an English speaking preschool teacher.

I can only give one example - I was looking to recruit an native English primary school teacher - and I was looking at a salary in the range of 4000-6000zl brutto with a proper "umowa o prace" contract. Certainly not bad money.

very good for you can be work in private schools of English as a Native Speaker of English. You should read first some books about methodology of teaching, complete some texbooks for student for every level and preper plan of lessons. I know it seems a bit hard, but you will see that it is also pleasure when you teach someone and you see very quikly the progress thanks your work :)

If no school wants to hire you, you can write an advertisment to the free websides. Something like this: Oferuję lekcje języka angielskiego, prowadzone przez Kanadyjkę, w bardzo przystępnej cenie. Zapewniam materiały i dojeżdzam do ucznia. How much you can earn? I thik if ask fo 40 pln per 60 min you will be very competitive :)

Harry, who do you know who can get 120PLN/hour teaching? I know one person (intimately) and he only gets that from one rich foreign company.

No-one will employ a 20 year old unless they're truly desperate - and such schools are becoming less and less these days.


People just won't pay a 20 year old that much money - especially one without "papers".


In Warsaw, it's not particularly impossible - I know in Poznan alone, schools are charging companies anything up to 100zl/hour.

As everybody said, get the paper first.

Almost every big university in Canada is offering the opportunity of studying abroad and also possibilities of working abroad! It could be a good way to get contacts in Poland for a job when you'll have your degree!

I want to move to Poland, but I so far only have a community college diploma. I want to get a university degree but I'm not sure what to study that would transfer over in Poland. So my question is what is a good degree to take that would be useful for employment in Poland?

Basically, none. Your best bet would be to get a high paying management or administrative position with a Western company, and get transferred to Poland at Western wages. Best bets: petroleum or geological engineering. For example, there is a Australian company that is reviving the mining industry in Wałbrzych.

Otherwise, there is very, very little, if anything, a Canadian can do in Poland without experiencing a prohibitive loss of earnings and saving potential vis a vis staying in Canada.

Currently programmers are in big demand all around the world. In Poland programmers earns a lot when comparing to other professions. But there is never guaranty that in 5 years crisis won't hit this industry.

Toilet cleaners are in demand too, but who would want to work either job?

VIX - I will give you the real deal, as someone who has been in your Exact Position ;)

#1 ) save your 7 grand a year tuition + books +.. and skip the worthless Bachelor degree from a Canadian University

#2 ) Print up a CV and choose your favorite degree moze... "Bachelor of Art History" or Sociology lol (you can wikipedia a few articles to brush up on the basics)

#3) Beef your CV with some fake teaching experience (you taught at a summer camp, coached basketball, blah blah blah)

#4) Choose a "TESL" certificate of your liking - add to CV.

You are ready! Fly over and start hustling your CV, networking. Language schools will give you offers mostly based on the fact that you are a native speaker alone. They will not do much if any background or CV fact checking.

how do I know? I am highly educated and receive offers all the time based on my beautiful Native accent, they couldn't care less about what degree I have, whether I have some BS tesel certificate or not.

Yes that is big money but probably can get paid more in Canada for it. Work half a year and then go to Poland for the other half doing business or such, I don't know the rules about opening businesses in Poland. But if you could do it then why not?

That would be true for any job. Moving to Poland from Canada would involve a serious cut in earning and savings potential. Perhaps the only way to avoid that is to get hired by a Western company IN THE WEST and get transferred to Poland while still receiving Western wages. Pretty hard to do if you are not a highly educated, highly qualified and highly experienced specialist.

Honestly you would hate living in Poland.

Everybody is fleeing Poland, not relocating there.
