Some opinions about current pay rates (normal pay per hour for housekeeping in Poland)...

I keep hearing differences from one extreme to another on how much I should pay a pani.
Can you provide me with some feedback on how much you pay and what their responsibilities are if you utilize one or have worked as one yourself? (i.e. how many kids? Do they do any housekeeping etc)

Also, is it normal to pay per hour worked? Or do you set a certain amount for x amount of hours each week regardless if worked completely or not?

I have a 5 year old boy and I'd like some light housekeeping done. Is 22zl an hour too much? Long term it will only be 20 hours a week with some nights out but during school breaks it would be 40 hours. I do not want to pay rock bottom prices either as I believe moral is important when dealing with children, as you couldn't pay me enough to babysit a kid that wasn't mine. LOL

I think for 22zl/hr@20 hours, you can probably be fairly picky. Especially if it's under the table...

I pay 200 a week for cleaning 120m2 apartment twice a week.

has more to do with laziness and appreciating a clean house. plants need to be watered, kitchen needs to be cleaned. my place is pretty dusty too.

Haha! Thank you, I don't know where I gathered that Pani was Nanny :0)

Mine gets 80zl for about four hours' work cleaning the flat and doing the ironing but that's mainly because she's so trustworthy she has her own set of keys. I have friends who pay about 50zl for the same number of hours and back when my ex-girlfriend was responsible for hiring and paying the maid, we paid that much too.

The usual term if it's mostly housework with some childminding thrown in is 'gospodyni' (at least that's what the Polish people I've known who have one call them).

We pay our Pani Jadzia 150 PLN for ironing and cleaning. She is here approx from 07:00 untill 19:00. She is coming here for like 12 years, and is basically part of the family. If we go on holidays she comes here to sleep over and take care of our cat. In this case we pay her per 24 hrs 50 PLN + once per week the 150 PLN for the cleaning part.

'gospodyni'

Gospodyni is when she's cooking for you.

Also, is it normal to pay per hour worked?

Yes. Usually babysitting hours are cheaper then cleaning hours. You can ask babysitter for some laundry folding, wiping high chair and loading/unloading dishwasher when the baby is sleeping. Cleaning lady will do much more.

So that's about $7 per hour. Poland is still relatively cheap. I pay mine in Canada $15.

Yes. 60 - 80 is a fair price though many people pay 50. I always paid 60 plus occasional tips. I know Poles who pay 20-30 for the same service (even in the capital) though that is too low to be ethical.

"Pani rates"? For a moment I thought this was an adult website. ;) Is that the proper term for a maid? Domowa Pani??

It doesn't sound good for any variation except pani do towarzystwa ;)

Yeah, I thought it sounded kind of funny. Pani do zabawy... :)

The answer has already been given and it is:

and call her "pomoc domowa" or something like that, and not "pani"...

or it may be "gosposia" (not: gospodyni), but this one may be judged a bit old-fashioned by some ...

I mentioned my confusion of the definition of "pani" to my Polish coworkers today and they had a nice laugh.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, very helpful.
