Native Speaker Translation Charge (Polish<>English)

Hey Folks,

I'm looking to start doing some freelance translation work. CVs etc. I have experience, as I work as a salaried 'English consultant' (czyli: translator, teacher, writer).

How much would you guess is the going rate for a native speaker's Polish to English translation efforts? Business was never my forte!

You might want to join proz.com a forum for translators, I believe some members show their rates. The site also contains useful glossaries and help on various difficult to translate phrases.

That's not going to be cheap. If you give me an email address I can forward it on to an English guy I know in Warsaw who does translations.

The industry standard is around 30PLN per 1800 character page (inc. spaces). He should get a volume discount. Another idea is to get a good Polish translator to do it with native English proofreading. More expensive but easier to find and more accurate.

Are you joking?! Anybody half decent in Warsaw is going to charge 150% to 200% of that price. Even more for a native speaker. I know native speakers who charge more than that for just proofreading.

Another idea is to get a good Polish translator to do it with native English proofreading. More expensive but easier to find and more accurate.

That is indeed going to be the easiest and best way and the most expensive, factor in minimum of 40zl per page for decent translator and 20 for a decent proofreader.

If he goes through an agency he'll certainly have to pay a lot more. There are, however, translators who charge the rate I quoted (which is what agencies pay translators). As for Warsaw, well it's not the centre of the universe, is it?

I charge per hour for proofreading. That way the better the text, the cheaper it is for the client. I avoid books, though.

The price is surely per word (one page may have between 200 and 400 words ;).
