What do the Poles hate and love about the U.S.?

What I love about US is the ease of everyday life. It's also a reason for a lot of what's wrong with this country.

Saw a bumper sticker last night: "I'm not bossy, I just know what you should be doing". haha ha.

I love the fact that the US is 3,000 miles from Europe which means the majority of Americans who have made the effort to come here to study or work tend to be the more open-minded and intelligent ones (I'm not including the loud 'see-Europe-in-a-week' American tourists). I can pretend that the idiotic politicians, movie stars, rappers, religious nuts, rednecks et al exist only in a little world inside that TV sitting in the corner of my room....

Oops, just realised that this thread is aimed at Poles, which I'm not (English, actually) but maybe Polish people have a similar view as mine...? I'll post it anyway... ;)

I've heard Poles say that what they like in America is the service in restaurants, hospitals, stores, they are more polite than in Poland. In America the customer always comes first and Poles see that difference when they come here. They smile and wish you a nice day which in Poland is rarely heard. They like America because people have more freedom, they can own wooded property where in Poland only very few people can own property with woods. They like America because when they come here they can earn "dollars" and send them home.

What they don't like and can't get used to America is that they have to obey the law. When there is a stop sign, you have to obey and stop even though there is nothing coming. In Poland many people disregard the sign because there is nothing coming so why should they stop? Poles don't like that everything in America is taxed. They want to buy something and when they go to the checkout there is added tax.

Some like the churches in the US, some don't because here we have carpets and bathrooms in churches, where in Poland there is no such thing.

They hate it when they can't get a credit card in the US when they have no credit history and don't understand how to get a credit history when they can't get a credit card.

They don't like the inches, yard, Fareinhart, miles, pounds etc and try to convert everything into metric system.

LOL I suppose hence the expression “California Stop”, because Poles in Wisconsin don’t stop at the Stop Sign.

I always stop when in WI, my brother might be driving down the other road.

In my neck of the woods, when cops have nothing to do, they hide around the stop sign intersections and gather revenue for the town.

Somewhat related: a friend of mine told me a story about riding a bike in Daytona last weekend: late at night, no cars in sight, just him at a traffic light and a cop car parked caddy corner from him, the light was weight-controlled and would not turn, so after twenty minutes of my friend rolling the bike back and forth along the sensor, he runs the light. Cop, with a big smile on his face, followed him gave him a ticket.

Aww that's not fair. What was he suppose to do after 20 minutes? What if he had to go to the bathroom? He should have gone down the sidewalk then cross.

What question? The US gov does not give out statistics. Half of the Polish people never return when they're visas expire that's why there are visa restrictions. You can't google this information but the US border patrol, the ICIS, INS all know who doesn't return back.

On Interstate 10 in Arizona there's no need for cops to hide. There's already plenty of speed enforcement cameras, issuing people speeding tickets galore. Some travelers have experienced misfortune, by receiving 2 tickets, within the course of one roadtrip.

I had driven there this past weekend. I made damn sure I didn't have a lead foot while driving.

Strange. When in NY, I was the only person to stop and wait for the lights to change. I was getting strange looks and it took my American friends a lot of time to convince me that it's OK to cross on red when nothing's coming. I've always thought this to be an American thing; in Poland people just cross the street when there's no zebra or lights nearby, but at the lights they just stand and wait.

Maybe it's different in other parts of the US.

I have already exposed personal reasons of the one member of PF which prevented him from seeing clearly the discriminatory policy of USA government towards Polish citizens.

Because there is a powerful lobby group in US and visa deal is just another tool for them to put pressure on Poland to pay them out. No payout no visa free travel, simple isn’t it?

Hidden taxes, (even though they exist) are generally frowned upon by the masses. It is considered sneaky or dishonest. It serves as a reminder that the state has chosen to profit from your transaction.

Because the Polish leaders responsible for negotiating NATO entry didn't have the sense to tie NATO membership (which was hugely symbolic for both the USA and Germany) to the visa waiver issue. The subsequent agreement for the "Son of Star Wars" also failed to take this into account - Poland has had two golden chances to force the USA into giving the visa waiver, and has failed both times.
