Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why.

The 3 month long spells of -30C in Toronto have nothing to do with a point of view. They just don't happen.


Actually, I also find it funny. Especially considering the fact that she tried to poke fun at some of the views Poles take for facts, and she did that by offering yet another myth that is not reflected in reality. Herself being Polish... there must be something to that myth making indeed.

Called Lake effect. Are you leeward or windward of the lake? Leeward (Buffalo) lots of snow, windward (Chicago) not as much. But temps are reversed, Colder in Chicago (especially with the wind).


Southeast Ontario??? But in the fruit growing sections of the States they use smudge pots in the Spring and Autumn.

as far as weather is concerned, how cold it was there vs. here, that's not going to be your worst problem IMO. the problem is simply being in Poland during the winter vs. being in a major city in Canada. Theres some truth in that, personally i prefer to have to brave the elements a little bit. You cant but wonder after another few thousand years of cars parking in shopping centers and electric blankets whether the human body would evolve into an even more fragile state than it currently is.

Perhaps sir would like a remote control wheel chair so he wouldn't have to walk to his car.

I personally did not find the temperatures in Poland as harsh to deal with as much as the luck of sunshine. There are very few sunny days between end of October and March. When it's cold I just dress warm. If there is no sunshine for a longer time, I just get depressed.

It is already starting. Many people do't have the immune systems any more to cope with such differences in temperatures. Very odd how dependant a species we are becoming. Think what we would do without our mobiles, internet or electricity :D

I would do just fine. I think a lot of people would be much happier without internet and mobile phones, and actually get in touch and interact with eachother, just like we did in our early teens. I still remember the first couple of cellphones in Holland, and how everybody thought it was ridiculous. (Cellphones existed before that, but of course average Joe couldn't afford such things back then.) Electricity would be cool to keep though.

Lived in Szczecin prior to my departure to Canada, but I had never been to Szczecin Cemetary,which is the third biggest in Europe.

Today is the day. The weather seems nice and my friend is gonna drive me there for a short visit.

I never thought that it could be such a problem. Warm clothes, shoes with thick sole and grok always did it for me.

I must admit that I'm not too fond of January and Ferbruary... it has to do with the post-christmass/new years eve depression, but in march everythng slowly turns back to life, etc so it's all good in the end... :)

gloomy weather
is what is outside at the moment. It is overcast, rainy, musty and damp.

This weather is typical at this time of the year and I find it quite depressing.

Hopefully it is not going to last for a long time.

There is also winter ahead, but I guess I will deal with it when it comes.
green space in Szczecin

I already mentioned one: the Szczecin Cemetery. I visited it yesterday afternoon and it was quite impressive. The large area has a lot of different species of trees and as I mentioned in my previous post, the designed is quite interesting. It is a nice place to go for a walk and one can actually bike there. It is charming and mysterious and one can walk around all day long since it covers over 150 ha.

near my place is another old and created by Germans Park, which area amount to24 ha, which is quite large space found in the center of the city. This is where I wanted to walk the dog I am getting in the future. It features many old trees and when I take a walk though it actually looks more like a little forest. I am so lucky to live by a place like that in the center of the city.

At this time of year when the weather starts turning to sh1t the best pick me up before the winter is to trade in the car and buy a newer one. This will have the effect of making your neighbours more jealous and envious, thus allowing you to wallow in the fact the weather maybe miserable but you have a new car, while for them the weather is miserable and you have a new car and they don't.

Now you have completely forgotten about the weather. :)

Are there any indoor swimming pools in Poland? I fight the winter blahs by swimming. Works like a charm. When I'm in the pool I think I'm in the South Seas.

As for the cold. Well I make my living working outdoors and once you acclimatize it ain't bad. Also, proper clothing makes a difference. People who lived before central heating dressed for the seasons. Something we forget in modern times. Wool in the winter which stays warm even if it's wet.

I grew up in Poland so I am accustomed to the weather here and if I survived the Canadian winter, I will survive the Polish one too, since I have many in the past.

Szczecin has always been warmer then the rest of Poland......can we move on?

Perhaps you post some photos that you took, so we can see what it looks like at this time of year. Every season has its magic...
