Moving from United Kingdom to USA. Is it worth it?
I can't knock London.. never have been there.
Quite a few graduates went to Canada notably in Games programming, pretty much killed the industry over in the UK. A relation from Cn was over here(UK) last week and said his sales market, microsoft hardware, was dying out as Canadians were buying from US websites. Last time I was in Canada staying with a relative, an environmental officer knocked at his door and said he would have to mow his front lawn as the grass was too long! It was only about 3 inches high.

The property price is very high too. Anyway I always "loved" USA according to Hollywood films (especially with Clint Eastwood ;)
You should watch these films more carefully again. e.g someone was murdered. The crime tool is pneumatic nail gun. Conclusion: this tool is common there, it was invented because of: they are lazy|they hurry up|they build houses using timber. Beware of termites man ;)

Masonry houses are damp,
Right and they retain too much heat in the summer.
lols...............yeah,right,whatever.....they dont blow away in a gust of wind though do they?
Its funny, those nasty shacks you live in are no more than the fake fronted shacks from old west towns, the only other countries in the world that still live in wooden shacks are in the third world.....you guys really have been sold a pup ...........
Asking again, dont you guys in the states have the story of The Three Little Pigs?

Canadian houses are among the best built in the world. they have gov't regulations and inspections that they have to pass. of course there is always they exception.
I can tell you the benefits of wood frame construction and masonry homes. I have lived in both.
In Canada, they have wood frame construction because it is cheaper, faster to build- but most importantly they withstand the huge fluctuation in temperature.
In my home town it is not unusual to have 35 C weather in the summer, with a humidex of 45 C. In the winter it gets down to -35 with a chill factor of -50. Our homes need to be able to withstand such drastic changes. With masonry homes it is not possible while maintaining budget.

like the present one again and that my mother who is 55 years old would have to stay in London alone as I don't think she will be granted with a visa...
I don't mean to be rude in any way but u don't sound like a londoner to me. Your set up is more like of an immigrant family that settled in London. Why would your 55year old mother live with u in London(especially central london)? My own mother would never live with me in a big city she would rather remain in her own house(or a council house if she didn't have one) she would never think of moving with me and my wife anywhere in the world. She has her own lifestyle (like most British women her age) that would never be changed by my own ambitions no matter how close i am to her. In other words her feet are firmly rooted in her home town.
If u think the States is all Hollywood and some sort of el dorado well good luck with that.
If u're still interested in getting a good house for u and your family in London (and not central London) the boroughs, for plus or minus 150 000 GBP and use the Tube to work like what all normal people in a big city do gives us a shout and we'll let u know where to start looking......

wooden houses get built, they stand for years, and then you die. how long does a house need to last? btw, who the heck wants to live in a 100 year old house anyway? have you ever seen a 100 year old house in Poland? I have....and it needed a bulldozer.

Food is cheap in the US. I just got a large pizza with the works for $10.00.
So you can buy $2 worth of food for $10 and think its the definition of cheap? Its the cost of the raw material which matters as I'd make my own pizza becuase quality and taste is more important than cheap and quantity.
"America sucks" thread. that's half of PF anyhow.
Its how the US is perceived around the World, get over it.
Fuzzy, Im not a Pole..... Ive just spent a long weekend in a 300 hundred year old house.....and I was speaking rehtorical stylee............of course in some locations there is nothing wrong with a wooden house, but,Im not talking "war" here,Im asking, why on earth do Americans still build wooden houses in Tornado Alley?
Would half of Joplin have blown away or been flattened if they had had decently built homes?
I mean, its not like it should be a surprise in Missouri and Oklahoma that it gets a touch windy now and again is it,yet still, wooden houses thrown up like the second little piggie.....and people die each year because of it. :(

There are several 200 year old houses in Warsaw - including the one where Bonaparte allegedly met Mme Walewska, in Raszyn.
Personally I don't mind wooden houses - the ones in PL are great, and in the US the cheapness of construction means you can have plenty of space. Poles in general don't like them though and tend, if anything, to build too solidly.
Ive just spent a long weekend in a 300 hundred year old house
Wonderful. North Elmsall Hall (must only be a few miles from you) is for sale at the moment - about 700 years old. I wish I could afford it.
To the OP: seriously, the US economy isn't in a good state at the moment, and they're hardly likely to be handing out green cards. It's much better to stay in London or perhaps move to the North. Or Poland - the economy is slowly growing there.

how true, go live in Harrow or Elstree or somewhere like normal people do and take the train to work...
How could you make your mum move to London and then leave her there while you swan off down the yellow brick road, taking the grandchildren with you?
Wonderful.
It was,Im going back again in September, taking a copy of The Life and Times of Tristram Shandy for atmosphere :)
( a better idea than the nude sunbathing i did last time but one and wondered for a while why on earth a cessna keeped circling............untill i remebered my long hair, uber skinniness and the amount of times ive been pipped by white van men only for them to turn red (most of the time ;) )as they drive by and see me from the front :):) )
Id go for a nice Adobe in AZ or NM anyway, but then again,I am a bit odd and spent half my childhood in them in southern Spain :)
more importantly, why do Americans live in tornado alley.
pass...........the early settlers lived in scratch dugouts. I wouldnt recomend a return to that but, short of moving millions out of a huge swathe of the US for the sake of a few weeks crappy weather each year, maybe just build stronger buildings?

@Isthatu2
.. tell you what's not funny, your posts, which are mind numbingly stupid day in and day out on here. Even if it was true (and it's not) I'd take a "fake fronted shack" over some cramped , smelly, overpriced, limey flat any day of the week, of which you only pray a tornado would knock over. Most of you are cramped lemmings and if you wandered over to St. John's Wood some blue blood would take a can of bug spray to you.
Sold a pup huh? England is a sh.tbox, basically why 200,000 of you snaggle teeth drunks leave every year for Canada, Spain.. Poland wherever. Not exactly an endorsement is it??
.. oh and tornados very seldom kill people and stone structures are damaged by them as well. Some denizens of the world have real weather to deal. We carry on.

Yes. I've been in London for six years only and becuase I don't have a father or brothers my mum was in Poland with no funds to live as there was no work in our region. We decided to move her to UK for a Christmas time only but she stayed here for another five years earning enough money to rent a studio flat in West London and become independent from us. I live in West London too and belive me you can forget about a house for 150.000£ (not to mention the City...),u can get two bedroom flat instead of (if you save for a 25% deposit).
honestly, you would do better in Canada or Australia. U.S. is not like what you see on t.v. unless you watch Rock of Love- that is totally real.

The best options is to save the money in the UK and buy back in Poland. Failing that, buying somewhere outside of the South East of England will make a massive difference.

you must have me mixed up with somebody else. I don't rip on the US. Our dollar is quite strong- this is why all the cross border shopping. the u.s. economy needs it.
