Interesting Post by a lady here

mojawyspa.co.uk/forum/76/43266/Jobcenter,0

The google translated version of her post is:

is this normale of the courses are sending Poles who speak English poorly? what is the point? if you do not understand half of what they try to knock me to the head? most in this irritates me is that if you do not I finish my course zabiorom allowance ... Apart from the fact that I have to walk on the course and at the same time 50 hours a week to look for work spreading cv ..

Basically, she is not happy about the Job Centre sending her to English courses.. She's claiming benefits btw.

What do you think?

forced doesn't sound good, encouraged sounds much better. English is a very useful language.

I'm Polish, but on this one I do agree with you Hudson. I don't care if it's called forced or encouraged, but if you want any benefits you should somehow contribute, even if it's only by learning language to bridge communication gap.

It's not a language course they've sent her to, but a vocational course. She claims she doesn't know enough English to benefit from it; all in all, a stupid excuse, but you should read the rest of the thread to see how the other forum members reacted to her complaint. She found no sympathy, suffice to say.

Also, she says she's taking an English course at a college and pays for it herself.

Google Translate can be very treacherous.

In an ideal world, you should not be allowed migrate to a nation without being reasonably proficient in the lingo. Of course, this would not be allowed in the EU. Was down in the tax office today and was browsing through their brochures whilst waiting for the revenue inspector. All brochures were in about 30 different languages, but not in Irish. Even in Igbo FFS!

She's claiming benefits btw

Can you speak Spanish? If so,go on to one of their political forums. They are legally clamping down on EU spongers. The chick would be told to vete a la mierda by the Spanish welfare officer!

Oi nig-nog!:)
Forced no! They shouldn't be allowed to work in this country without basic English in the first place.

Do you blame her? I'm sure you would do the same if you could!

Imagine the uproar if Brits were expected to learn a language to a basic level before working in a foreign country?

Of course Poles should learn the native language wherever they settle around the world.

But quality and standardization matters. For instance, Poles would be wasting their time and job prospects if they learned, ahem, "English" anywhere north of the Watford Gap. Indeed, there was a time in the early years of the BBC where they would send their Foreign Correspondents to cover stories "Oop North" (i.e., the North of England and Scotland).

I know of a couple of schemes down my way were unemployed foreigners teach unemployed natives their lingo in exchange for the local lingo. Its a great initiative actually. Skilled unemployed people teaching others and vice versa. Computer programmers teaching computer illiterate middle aged people the basics about computers.
